At some point I won’t be able to say that we are continuing on with our Sermon on the Mount but that wont be this week
Today we actually get to the all important part of the sermon
In fact this was the part of the sermon I wanted to preach day 1 but thought we should look at what is in front of it before we get to this one
This sermon I actually heard while down at Timothy Barnabas by pastor Steve Gaines
Steve took over for Adrian Rogers when he retired
I told him those are big shows to fill and Steve told that Adrian took those shoes to heaven
Before we get to the actual text this morning let me tell you how we got here
We went through the Beatitudes, and then to being salt and light
We learned that we are to live out our faith in front of people so that it points to Jesus
We learned that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law which actually points out our sin to us and should drive us into the arms of the Savior
Then we learned that God expects us to give, and it is not just money, and that when we give it should point people to Jesus because if it points to us then we are doing it wrong
I think that actually catches everyone up this morning
So if you are following along with us then you know that we are in where it talks about prayer
Like I said earlier this is the sermon I wanted to preach right off the back but thought we should actually look at what is in front of and after
We are going to look at how Jesus taught on prayer
Prayer is one of the most important pieces in our walk with Jesus
To look internally Jesus calls the church a house of prayer, the question must be asked if we are not a praying church then who’s house is it
That is an honest asset
This sermon isn’t intended to lay on a guilt trip, but rather a cry to return to pray
To encourage you to reignite or begin to pray
It all begins with prayer
Matthew 6:5–8 NASB95
5 “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6 “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Jesus reminds us here that we are not to practice the disciplines of walking with Jesus so that people see you and I
But we should pray that it points to Jesus, and if it ain’t Jesus the it’s wrong
Then Jesus encourages us to do just what He did Himself
If you will recall Jesus often went away to a secluded place to spend time with the Father
For you and I that means finding a room or a space in our homes to spend time in prayer
Church this is not a simple suggestion but a strong encouragement from God Himself
If you and I want to be like Jesus then do it
I have found a room in my house that I have made a prayer wall and to be real honest a lot of your names are on
I have taken note cards and put names and dates on them and I get up in the morning and go spend time praying over the cards on the wall
I have been convicted that I need to be there every morning
I want to challenge you to find a spot in your house and begin with the note cards you have today and write down the prayer requests and get up in the morning and pray over them
Not just wake up in the morning and meaninglessly repeat some names you have pinned to the wall
But sincerely pour of those names
Sometimes I just sit in silence starring at the wall of names I have pinned up
Often times we are scared to pray because we think it has to sound spiritual and perfect
Jesus reminds us that it doesn’t and we shouldn’t be focusing on how others think of it but rather if it is pleasing to God
Now Jesus is going to begin to share how to pray
This is so crucial to your walk with Christ
God will do little to nothing for the person who is not praying
One of the questions I was always asked and now I always ask is have you prayed about
If you haven’t it does no good talking about it
In Steve Gaines book Pray like it Matters he gives a good breakdown of the Lords Prayer
Matthew 6:9 NASB95
9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
This is how we are to pray
Notice this is a call to everyday recite this prayer and you will be covered no but when we pray we are to say things like this
We are to approach God with praises!
We are to also know Him by name
Which means church if you are not a son or daughter of the Most High King then you don’t get to call Him Father
Not everyone gets to do that because not everyone is saved
Church only those who are saved can do that
We know that Salvation only come through Jesus
But if you are a son or daughter of the Most High King then you do get to call Him Father and that shows the intimacy of prayer
So we can through Salvation know God by Name
Throughout scripture there are many names people use to describe God
To name a Few
SLIDE WITH NAMES OF JESUS
Jehovah Jireh - The Lord My Provider -
Jehovah Rapha - The Lord Who Heals -
Jehovah Nissi - The Lord My Banner -
Jehovah Makadesh - The Lord Who Sanctifies -
Jehovah Shalom - The Lord My Peace -
Jehovah Rohi - The Lord My Shepherd -
Jehovah Tsidkenu - The Lord My Righteousness -
Jehovah Shammah - The Lord Who Is Present -
The Bread of Life -
The Light of the World -
The Door of the Sheep -
The Good Shepherd - ,
The Resurrection and the Life -
The Way, the Truth, and the Life -
The True Vine
We probably could have done a sermon on the names of God
But I want to encourage you to as you study scripture look for the names of God and begin to incorporate them into your praise about who God is when you pray
Matthew 6:10 NASB95
10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
Church this is exactly the model used by Jesus
We are to submit to Gods will daily
Often times we spend time in prayer asking God for things or asking God for direction
When before we even ask for a direction we need to be submitting to that direction before we know it
Church its called faith
But we have is not faith
Which is why God calls us to submit to whatever He is going to ask us to do and church that looks like praying over the day
Submitting to the things God has in store for you before the day even begins
Are you submitting to God or do we ask God for direction in our lives and then pick and choose based off what we think will happen or what we want to do
Church that is not submitting to Gods will
Matthew 6:11 NASB95
11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.
Church no wonder this follows the previous verse
Because after submit to what God has for you, you should ask Him to give what He has for you
This is requesting God to meet our needs
And maybe before you begin to list your needs you should test them against scripture to see if they are really needs or are they just wants
Because this verse is not about getting what you want but
This verse is about knowing a good father
See God is a very very good father and because He is a good father He will meet our needs
Notice again church its not about the wants in our lives but about what we need
And I understand that My Father knows better than I do
My girls are still learning that dad knows what they need better than they do
And because I am a loving father I will give them what they need
This goes back to the intimacy part of the relationship with God and it is never stronger than through prayer
Matthew 6:12 NASB95
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Matthew 6:12–15 NASB95
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’ 14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
Matthew 6:12-15
I must explain this part verse and we will break this down even further then just the verse
The first part of 12 shows how you and I as children of God are to be seeking forgiveness for our sin from God
But if we are children of God then we are not to sin anymore because we are set free that is true but we understand that you and I will fall to sin because no body is perfect except Jesus
See when you become a child of the Most High God through a personal relationship with Jesus your sins are forgiven, and you are free from the chains of sin
meaning sin is no longer your master
But that doesn’t mean that you will go on to live a perfect life, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try
The Bible says that if we say we have no sin we are a liar, you will slip up and you will mess up
Which is why through prayer God encourages us to seek forgiveness to restore the fellowship with God because as a believer it doesn’t mean you will lose your salvation
but it does mean that the relationship with God needs to be reconciled and restored
In the same verse God encourages us to forgive others
and then a few verses later he explains that by forgiving others God will forgive us, but if we do not forgive us then God won’t forgive our own sins
Church we have talked about this in previous sermons that we are to live at peace with each other
Part of that is forgiving others and darn I say it even if they haven’t forgiven them
You all have heard the saying unforgiveness is like drinking poison hoping it would kill the other person
that is exactly true it does nothing but hurt you
And to top it off unforgiveness also gives satan a foothold in your life
Matthew 6:13 NASB95
13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
We will break this verse down as well
The first part is a call to not fall into sin
Scripture says that satan looks for opportunities to make you fall
Don’t give Him any opportunity, don’t make it easy on him
Church this is done through prayer
This is where we pray over the day
Steve Gaines - Don’t walk into a day that hasn’t been prayed over
Pray the Armor of God on in the morning, your armor does no good sitting at home while you are at and about or at work
Look over your day and begin to pray over your schedule that God would guide you through your day
Pray that God would give you the courage to run away from the temptations that come to you throughout the day
Then Jesus ends his model for prayer with more Praise
Praise should be the bookends of your prayers
When we praise God, we are agreeing with who He says He is and What He says He will do
Understand the same powerful God we read about through scripture is still alive and active in us!
That should excite us and give us encouragement to go out and serve the Lord
The God of the Universe will never leave you, He has forgiven your sin, He loves you, and Desires that you spend time with you
Praise the Lord He is Alive
Church I cannot stress how important prayer is in your life
It is so important because without it, God will do very little
Worst form of pride is praylessness
Worst form of pride is to think we don’t need to be praying over every single day
As the band comes up
Prayer is communicating with God
It is talking and listening
It is Praise, It is Submitting, It is Asking, It is Seeking Forgiveness, It is Forgiving, It is to Pray over the day, It is praise
Maybe you are here and you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus
We want to invite you to the front, there will be people who can talk with you and show you through scripture how you can have a personal relationship with Jesus this morning
Maybe you are here and you have a personal relationship with Jesus but for whatever reason you know you and God are not in fellowship
Maybe you need to come and repent of some sin or maybe you need to come and just sit at the altar in silence or spend sometime in prayer
the altar is open
I do want to challenge you church
take the note cards home and use them
Write your prayer request on them
and pray over them!
