Men Grounded in Truth/Can you handle the Truth?
Introduction
I. Reminder is needed.
II. Recognize your stance/belief.
The minister must labour neither for praise nor for purse, but for conscience; he must fish for souls, not for riches. There are too many that seek the Church goods rather than the Church’s good.
The higher a man rises, the more Satan desires to sift him. 1. The natural tendency of fallen nature. 2. The many and urgent temptations to leave even what we know.
III. A JUDICIOUS PRECAUTION. “I will … put you always in remembrance.” 1. The necessity for this course ought to reconcile us to the constant repetition of even the most elementary truths of religion. 2. Christianity consists of two parts—faith and practice. Both are easily forgotten or neglected. Other things absorb the mind.
III.Reality
III.Reality must still exist.
no matter how close to the Lord we have been as Christians, or how long-standing our Christian commitment, or how central our position in the fellowship, that danger of wobbling still remains, and we should check ourselves constantly for the tell-tale signs.
Are they especially flawed as Christians to have come so far only to need to be reminded? Not at all! Returning continually to the core truths of Christianity is part of a growing Christian self-understanding. This is poignantly underlined in Peter’s own growth as a disciple. He promised faithfully that he would follow Jesus to prison and to death. But Jesus knew him better, and said that even he would find it impossible to stay loyal when the Roman troops came. Jesus said that he had prayed for Peter, however, and promised that when the nightmare was over Peter was to ‘strengthen’ the other disciples
