What are the 7 purposes of the Holy Spirit?

Seven purposes of the Holy Spirit:

Give assurance of acceptance by God ().

Acts 15:8 AV
And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

To convict the world of sin ().

John 16:7–8 AV
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

To provide spiritual gifts ().

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 AV
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

To work miracles, signs, and wonders ().

Romans 15:18–19 AV
For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

To give boldness in preaching and witnessing (; ; ).

Acts 1:8 AV
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 4:31 AV
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Acts 4:31
Acts 5:32 AV
And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

To cultivate the fruit of the Spirit (; ).

John 15:1–7 AV
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Romans 14:17 AV
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

To sanctify the believer (, ).

2 Thessalonians 2:13 AV
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
1 Peter 1:2 AV
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

Outward manifestation of the Holy Spirit:

Old Testament manifestations:

Numbers 11:25–27 AV
25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. 26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. 27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.
1 Samuel 10:9–12 AV
9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day. 10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets? 12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
1 Samuel 1
In addition to these two scriptures, God would often times empower prophets, priests, judges, workers, and kings.
In addition to these two scriptures, God would often times empower prophets, priests, judges, workers, and kings.
In addition to these two scriptures, God would often times empower prophets, priests, judges, workers, and kings.
Sometimes these workers of God would be able to accomplish beyond human feats of strength (i.e. Samson), other times God would endow them wisdom to accomplish specific tasks (Bazaleel , Joshua).
It is important, once again, to note that God would anoint people with his Spirit to perform the duties in which he called them to do.
Also, remember that prophecy in the Old Testament at times were ecstatic.
Ecstatic- of, relating to, or characterized by ecstasy, or a state of sudden, intense, overpowering emotion: an ecstatic frenzy.
Isaiah 28:11 AV
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
2 Peter 1:21 AV
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

New Testament manifestations:

Outward Manifestations of the Holy Spirit:

Considering the very beginning of the New Testament we see John the Baptist. Who was filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb. John was a prophet and he prophesied.
Jesus, was conceived by the Holy Ghost. At Jesus’ baptism, John witnessed the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus in the form of a dove.
Jesus himself was a prophet and operated in the gift of prophecy. He also performed miracles by the power of the Holy Ghost.
Hebrews 2:4 AV
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
Later in scripture, we find that the Holy Ghost is poured out upon the 120 disciples in the Upper Room.
Acts 2:1–5 AV
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Acts 2:1–4 AV
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The initial outward manifestation of the inward presence of the Holy Ghost is they spoke in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Fact: There has been and will always be an outward demonstration that an individual has been filled with the Holy Ghost.
Acts 4:31 AV
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Acts 5:1–15 AV
1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. 6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. 10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. 12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. 13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. 14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) 15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
Acts 8:17–19 AV
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
Acts 10:44–46 AV
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Acts 1
Acts 10:43–46 AV
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Then answered Peter,
Acts 19:5–7 AV
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve.
Acts 4:1–10 AV
1 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. 4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. 5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, 6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; 10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 19:5-7
Repeatedly throughout Acts (which is the history of the Early Church) we see that there was always an outward manifestation of the inward receiving of the Holy Ghost.
Later in the New Testament, Apostle Paul lists additional gifts that are manifested the Holy Ghost:
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 AV
4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Gifts of the Spirit:

Word of Wisdom

Word of Knowledge

Gift of Healing

Working of Miracles

Gift of Prophecy

Distinguishing of spirits

Many kinds of unlearned languages

Interpretation of unlearned languages

Note: We must not confuse the gift of tongues with unknown tongues.
One particular scripture that I hear anti-Pentecostal misquote is .
1 Corinthians 12:30 AV
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
Some have erroneously taken this scripture to mean that not everyone who is baptized in the Spirit speaks in tongues.
However, when approaching scripture, it is important that we consider it in context.
Paul is talking about gifts that are placed in the church. Upon further investigation, we can conclude that Paul is not talking about what he later describes as “unknown tongues” but rather the gift of speaking various discernable unlearned languages.

Inward Manifestation of the Holy Spirit:

Fruit of the Spirit:

Galatians 5:22–25 AV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Galatians 5:21–25 AV
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Love = Agape- Godly love, an unconditional love that is produced by the Spirit of God.
Galatians 5:23–25 AV
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Joy = Chara- joy, gladness, rejoicing. Not based or produced by outward circumstances, produced by the Spirit of God. Hence, a saint of God can be in bad circumstances, but because the fruit of joy is produced by the Spirit, the believer can rejoice in knowing that bad circumstances are temporal and will ultimately turn for their good.
Peace = Eirene- tranquility, concord, unity, absence of strife, a soul assured of its salvation through Christ.
Longsuffering = Makrothumia- forbearance, fortitude, forbearing evil, patience, clemency, slow to avenge injuries or insults, enduring, steadfastness, bearing troubles, not giving up.
Gentleness = Chrestotes- kindness exemplified and shown.
Goodness = Agathosune- Moral uprightness, good living. Upright heart and life.
Faith = Pistis- faithfulness, dependable, truthful, reliable, also belief.
Meekness = Prautes- mildness, forbearance, gentleness, humility.
Temperance = Enkrateia- self-control, continence, able to master desires, passions, and appetites.
