Is our holiness based on our actions?
Is our holiness based on our actions?
Behavior can be described as holy or unholy, does this mean that our holiness is based on our actions?
Can our actions make us unholy?
unholy is used 2x in scripture
1 Timothy 1:9 NKJV
knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
unholy - wicked, defiled by sin.
Can the Holy Spirit live in an unholy person? No
2 Timothy 3:2 NKJV
For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2 Timothy 2:21 NLT
If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.
not saying that something other than the blood of Jesus can cleanse us.

2 Timothy 1:9 NKJV
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
not saying that something other than the blood of Jesus can cleanse us.
this () means cleanse your life of anything that would open the door to the enemy or ruin his testimony.
2 Timothy 2:22–3:5 NLT
Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants. You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!
misunderstanding re: holiness - we give the devil a legal right to wreak havoc on our lives when we live in an unholy manner.

misunderstanding re: holiness - we give the devil a legal right to wreak havoc on our lives when we live in an unholy manner.
We have a legal right to be blessed if we live holy and cursed if we don’t.
2 Timothy 2:25–26 NLT
Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.
2Ti 2:25-26
Paul didn’t say it was because they lived in an unholy manner. He said it’s because they “oppose the truth”
In other words, they are believing lies - Wrong Believing
He gives the remedy:
for God to “change those people’s hearts.”
for them to “learn the truth,” and
for them to “come to their senses.”
If they come to their senses, they will no longer be held captive by the devil to do his will.
Freedom is not about what we do, it’s about what we believe.
1 Corinthians 6:11 NKJV
And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 1:30 NKJV
But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—
Hebrew - qo-des - apartness, sacredness, separateness
sanctification & holiness is the same word in the greek - hagiazo - separation to God, to set apart, sanctify, to make holy; consecrate; separate from unto.
Being “made holy” isn’t a change of behavior; but a change of “location.”
Don’t think of holiness as how we’re walking; but where we’re walking.
Hebrews 10:10 NKJV
By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 10:19–20 NKJV
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
Holiest - the Holy of Holies where the presence of God dwells.
Exodus 25:21–22 NKJV
You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you. And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel.
When you fail and behave in an unholy manner, it defies logic that the place to experience the most peace is in the Holiest of all Holy places: the presence of God Himself.
Hebrews 4:15–16 NKJV
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
(also kjv)
Jesus, our High Priest, has been “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.”
He says to us, “Let’s talk. I want to hear what’s on your mind. What concerns you? What are your fears? What are your questions? I’m here for you.”
