I Corinthians 10:1-6 (Part 43) Spiritual Disaster and Including Explanation of Baptism
It is an expansion of 9:27—the subject is the danger of spiritual disaster . . .
• Paul can be –9:27
• Our fathers—10:1
• Us/we—10:6
Structure of Chapter 10 revolves about three words
• “For”-10:1
• “But”—10:5
• “Now”—10:6
The blessings of Israel—10:1-4
• They experienced a dramatic deliverance—vv. 1-2: 1) Baptism—the emphasis is on identification
• They experienced daily provision—vv. 3-4: 1) ‘Spiritual’ food—it came from God (provision); 2) It also typifies Christ; 3) God provided yet Israel fell—why? a) Attitude (Num. 13)—total lack of faith; b) Action—I Cor. 10:6-10
The value of their actions—v. 6 (examples for us)
What are the nature of them?
• Their cravings—v. 6a: 1) The issue is that they desired something in place of God’s provision
Baptism—Acts 2:38
• Peter establishes—“you crucified your Messiah”—v. 36
• Their response—what shall we do? (admission of guilt more than anything)
• The apostles respond—vv. 38-40
• Two imperative (commands) mood verbs: 1) Repent: a) Second person plural; 2) Be baptized: a) First person singular
• The two commands are not to happen at the same time: 1) You all must repent—and whichever one of you does—let him be baptized; 2) “Repent”—change of mind—in this context it is concerning the Messiah they crucified (v. 36)
• For the remission of sins: 1) Prepositional phrase which can go with both of the verbs here—grammatically
• The way to determine which is correct (does for remission of sins go with both repent and be baptized—or just repent?)—harmony! 1) Acts 3:19; 2) Acts 10:43; 3) I Peter 3:21
