Basic Training God’s Way

1 Kings 17:2–3 KJV 1900
2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
Amos 8:11–12 NKJV
11 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the Lord. 12 They shall wander from sea to sea, And from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, But shall not find it.

There are three abilities we must learn for spiritual success.

1.) Teaches Us to Walk with God Daily

2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 1900
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
1 Kings 17:2–3 KJV 1900
2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
Matthew 6:34 NKJV
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

2.) Teaches Us to Obey God Completely

1 Kings 17:5 KJV 1900
5 So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
James 1:22 KJV 1900
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

3.) Teaches Us to Trust God Absolutely

1 Kings 17:4 KJV 1900
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
1 Kings 17:6 NKJV
6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.
Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Waiting On the Lord

Isaiah 40:30–31 KJV 1900
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.
1 Kings 18:4 KJV 1900
4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
Ephesians 3:20 KJV 1900
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
1 Kings 17:7 KJV 1900
7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
1 Kings 17:8 KJV 1900
8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,

Then Comes the Smelting

1 Kings 17:9 KJV 1900
9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Refines Our Humility

1 Kings 17:9 KJV 1900
9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
Luke 4:25–26 KJV 1900
25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
Philippians 2:5–8 KJV 1900
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Refines Our Contentment

1 Kings 17:10–11 KJV 1900
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. 11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
James 1:27 KJV 1900
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
1 Kings 17:15–16 KJV 1900
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.
Philippians 4:11 KJV 1900
11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Refines Our Gentleness

1 Kings 17:18 NKJV
18 So she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”
1 Kings 17:19 NKJV
19 And he said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
1 Kings 17:20–21 NKJV
20 Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?” 21 And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.”
1 Kings 17:24 NKJV
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.”
