Today we continue to look at how Jesus made disciples that changed the world. Remember he did not build buildings and wait for people to come to hear him speak.
Instead, He chose 12 young men out of the crowd who were following him to invest more time in. At the end of three years 1 of these guys betrayed him (Judas), 9 of the ran off when the soldiers took him, 1 denied him (Peter) and only one followed him to the cross (John).
This model seems like a complete failure when you look just at the numbers in this way but as the Bible tells us 11 of these guys along with Matthias who replaced Judas took the gospel ad spread it all around the world.
How did they do it?
By following the way Jesus taught them. Discipleship: The Jesus Way
There was no need to have any other method besides what Jesus taught them. We can see in history that when the church got away from the model Jesus gave his disciples the church decreased in size and morals. However, when the church follows Jesus’ method the church increase
Mark 3:13–14 ESV
And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach

The Call

These 12 Guys had been through the first two phases of Jesus’ discipleship method. They went through “Come and See” and “Come and Follow Me” but know Jesus calls these 12 out from among the crowd.
He got up on the mountain (a high place) to make know who it was that He would call out to come along side him and serve.
During “Come and See” they were invited to explore and
During“Come and Follow Me” they were invited to come learn
But now they are being called to “Come Be with Me” which invites them to come serve.
Put simply Jesus was inviting them to do ministry with him. Not just receive any longer but to give to others as it had been given to them.
Luke 6:38 ESV
give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

The Response

“They came to Him”
Amazing how that works. When Jesus calls you the proper response is to get up and go to Him.
Sadly, this is why many professing believers seem to struggle day to day. I am not talking about lost people here because they may still be in the “Come and See” stage.
Not everyone who “Come and Sees” stays!
Matthew 19:21 ESV
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
This rich young ruler had follow the law but had not given his life to Christ yet. He still had something between him and God. It was his possessions. He valued what he had on Earth more than Jesus. The rich man responded...
Matthew 19:22 ESV
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
These 12 men had seen Jesus and followed Jesus for over a year now so when he calls them out they are prepared to come quickly to serve. They know what will be required and are ready to give it all.
Dear friends, some of you have been in the “Come and See” phase for years possibly decades while some have progressed to the “Come and Follow Me” which you are learning from the Lord (We all are still learning mind you) , but those who get stuck in the “Come and Follow Me” phase never start serving others for the kingdom.
These are the people (perhaps it’s you) who want to be served but not serve! You want to be given but do not want to give.
This is where the rubber meets the road in the way Jesus did discipleship. He called them out to go and serve others and they responded quickly.
The Lord has called many of you here today but you are stuck in the “Come and See” and “Come and Follow Me” phases.
Be honest with yourself, time is to short for us to play games with God. Many of you have be deceived by the American church where you come and see and follow after man’s programs.
What would it look like a year from now if this church body (DeBerry Baptist Church) answered the call of Jesus to “Come Be with Me”?
That’s the challenge and the appointment the Lord called the 12 men to on the mountain that day, but it is also for any true disciple of Jesus Christ.

The Appointment

When Jesus appointed these 12 men to the work of the ministry, he gave them a new name (apostles). This group constituted the foundation of His church. The house hold of God which was built....
Ephesians 2:20 ESV
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
Eph
The church is built on Jesus Christ being the cornerstone.
The cornerstone is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. All other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.
If you attend a church where Jesus is not the cornerstone run because you will not be able to do the work he has called you to without him be present.

The Work

This is a word that causes much confusion for many people in church. “WORK”
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
You can not be saved by any works of your own because Jesus did everything required for salvation on the cross. It’s finished is what Jesus said on the cross before he gave up his spirit.
It is God’s Grace that he allowed Jesus to die on the cross in our place, but we must except through Faith in Jesus’ complete work.
James 2:14–17 ESV
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Jesus called these 12 men out to come be with him so that he might send them out to preach!
Jesus did not call them out to build building so they could sit down in comfort but he called them out to do the work of the ministry.
Ephesians 4:12 ESV
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Ephesians 4:11–13 ESV
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
There is work to be done church. Will you “Come Be with Jesus”? He is calling you out so that you can serve others!
