Mark 15:33–41 CSB
33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? 35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.” 37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40 There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.
mk 15:33-

I. Darkness.

Mark 15:33–36 CSB
33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? 35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.”

A. God made sure all knew the darkness of the moment.

Mark 15:33 CSB
33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
Illus: Darkness is important on many different fronts.
1. The plague that directly preceded the death of the first born was… Darkness. A sign to the Jews of what God was doing.
2. It was common held belief in biblical times that the cosmos would communicate the major life events of kings. Jesus’ birth was somunicated by a new star. Jesus death was accentuated by darkness covering the land. A sign to the gentiles of what God was doing.
3. Darkness in scripture is a clear sign of evil.
Our God is a God who speaks. In this moment He speaks clearly about what is happening at the cross.
He is communicating that Jesus is the first born mail sacrificed, he is the lamb slain that God might passover sin.
God is communicating that Jesus is the king slain. Just as the Heavens declared the glory of his birth, so also the heavens declared the tragedy of his birth.
God is communicating the wickedness of the cross. In the way that men tore their robes in sorrow, God brought darkness to the world to communicate the depth of iniquity at this moment. The holy and righteous God of the universe was killed for and at the hands of wicked men.
Amos 8:9–10 CSB
9 And in that day— this is the declaration of the Lord God I will make the sun go down at noon; I will darken the land in the daytime. 10 I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth and every head to be shaved. I will make that grief like mourning for an only son and its outcome like a bitter day.
Amos 8:9-10

B. Jesus faced the greatest punishment of all.

Mark 15:34 CSB
34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
Illus: Up until this point Jesus faced accusations, torture, and pain which we could not even grasp.
Jesus was abandoned by his followers. He was denied by peter.
Jesus was abused, and accused by the religious leaders of his day.
Jesus was falsely convicted by Pilot after a mockery of a trial.
The mob which saw his miracles, screamed for his Crucifixion.
He was beaten within an inch of his life having the very skin on his back ripped off of him.
He was hung on a cross, with nails in his hands and feet to accentuate the pain.
In all of this, Jesus remained silent.
The greatest pain Jesus faced was when all of sin was placed on Jesus, he felt the wrath of God, and was separated from the God.
Yes, Jesus screamed in pain, but he screamed intentionally communicating what was happening by citing Scripture.
Catch that, on the cross Jesus quoted scripture.
Psalm 22:1–8 CSB
1 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning? 2 My God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, by night, yet I have no rest. 3 But you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in you; they trusted, and you rescued them. 5 They cried to you and were set free; they trusted in you and were not disgraced. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by people. 7 Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads: 8 “He relies on the Lord; let him save him; let the Lord rescue him, since he takes pleasure in him.”
ps 22:1-
Psalm 22:27–31 CSB
27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. All the families of the nations will bow down before you, 28 for kingship belongs to the Lord; he rules the nations. 29 All who prosper on earth will eat and bow down; all those who go down to the dust will kneel before him— even the one who cannot preserve his life. 30 Their descendants will serve him; the next generation will be told about the Lord. 31 They will come and declare his righteousness; to a people yet to be born they will declare what he has done.
ps 22:

II. The Temple.

Mark 15:37–38 CSB
37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

A. Upon Jesus’ death, the temple was no longer needed.

Mark 15:37–38 CSB
37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
Illus: I want to be clear, there was never a sacrifice, nor a ritual that cleansed people from sin.
The temple was never the end of God’s promises. It was a step, a prophecy of God’s real promise, Jesus Christ.
When people offered sacrifices in the temple so that they might enter the presence of God, every sacrifice was a step of faith to the true sacrifice, Jesus Christ.
Every animal killed was a picture of the cross. Every part of the priests ceremony was a an act of faith towards the great high priest.
All of the temple ceremonies were given so that a sinful people could approach a holy God.
As we sin, our sin prevents us from approaching God. If we were to approach God on our own we would face His unrelenting wrath.
When Jesus died on the cross, he took all of that. The end of it is that no more animals ever needed to die. God did not need to stay separated in a building. Jesus, through His death, created the way to approach God.
Romans 5:10–11 CSB
10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.
Rom 5

B. Jesus replaced the temple.

Mark 15:37–38 CSB
37 Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
Illus: Let me try to illustrate this… smart phones have completely changed the way we do life.
Think about it… we no longer need paper maps, simple cameras, alarm clocks, paper calendars, CD players, DVD Players, Rolodexs, weather radios, calculators, GPSs, levels, and so much more.
Why? Because your smart phone has roughly replaced all of those.
Once Jesus came, he accomplished in His single death what all of the sacrifices over the course of Israel's history could never do.
The purpose for the temple was to demonstrate what was necessary to forgive sin. The purpose for the temple was to give the people an act of faith in the future true sacrifice.
Just as God was clear in his communication with darkness, He was crystal clear with the temple. It was done. It had served it’s purpose.
More than that though, by ripping the curtain which separated the Holy of Holies from the world, God communicated that the way into the Holy of Holies was open in Christ.
Hebrews 10:19–22 CSB
19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus— 20 he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh)— 21 and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.
Heb 10:19-22

III. The Witnesses.

Mark 15:39–41 CSB
39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40 There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.

A. The centurion believed.

Mark 15:39 CSB
39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Illus: Mark was primarily written to gentiles. Romans, Greeks, and other non-Jews.
This is why the centurion plays such a major role in Mark’s account…Mark is in introduction to God’s work for the world through Jesus.
Mark almost puts a stage light onto the centurion to say, this man was not a Jew, did not know the prophecies, but when given the sheer magnitude of the cross came to the conclusion that Jesus was God.
But the centurion leaves the reader with the question, what do you believe. With all the signs and wonders listed in the book, with the trial, torture, and death of Jesus… what do your believe?
1 John 5:11–12 CSB
11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 The one who has the Son has life. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1 John 5:

B. Mark did not leave the cross hopeless, but instead with the very people who would discover Jesus.

mk 15:
Mark 15:40–41 CSB
40 There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.
Illus: The certain climax of the book of Mark is when Jesus screams, “My God, My God, Why have you abandoned me”, but Mark is not done with this book.
At the end of the account of Jesus’ death he shown who was there to see it… and then quickly moves to these same women as the witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection.
mk 16:1-7
Mark 16:1–7 CSB
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb at sunrise. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” 4 Looking up, they noticed that the stone—which was very large—had been rolled away. 5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ”
