I believe that a lot of people know that they are sinners

maybe not use the wording like that, maybe they will

but they know that there is something wrong in their life and that they are missing something

New Year’s resolutions

everyone trying to perfect their lives believing that something is wrong or missing

We celebrate the sacrifice of soldiers and we thank God for the sacrifice of his son

but do we really know what that means?

Today we will look at the OT sacrifices and compare to what Jesus has done for us

Why do we need a sacrifice… Why did Jesus have to die, couldn’t it have been done another way?

Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year. 2 Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, purified once and for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5 Therefore, as he was coming into the world, he said:

You did not desire sacrifice and offering,

but you prepared a body for me.

6 You did not delight

in whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.

7 Then I said, “See—

it is written about me

in the scroll—

I have come to do your will, O God.”,a

8 After he says above, You did not desire or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law), 9 he then says, See, I have come to do your will.

He takes away the first to establish the second.

10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.

Our Need for a Sacrifice

We have gone over needs before, every preacher does

whenever somebody thinks of needs, we always think, this world...

food, water, clothing, ext…

we think of what we do not need

smart phones, bigger houses and fancier cars

for the most part, especially away from the church or the Pastor, we do not go with I need Jesus’ blood!

without the blood of Jesus we are relying on the law to save us

Since the law has only a shadow (foreshadow) of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.

The law is a shadow of God’s plan…

a foreshadow of what was to come

an understanding of what it is that Jesus was going to do for us

we cannot fully appreciate all that Jesus has done for us if we do not understand law

The law cannot perfect the worshipers - v1

Perfect means to make complete

the text assumes our need for a sacrifice

a sacrifice is needed due to our sin

We live in a world...

We know that our world is broken, but that we too are not perfect or complete

We all have failed to live to God’s standard

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

a sacrifice is needed because we cannot enter the presence of God

The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of two of Aaron’s sons when they approached the presence of the Lord and died. 2 The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he may not come whenever he wants into the holy place behind the curtain in front of the mercy seat on the ark or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

perhaps one of the saddest verses in scripture

“you cannot come whenever you want...”

a sacrifice is needed because we are doomed to Hell

OT law, the High Priest would have to go in and make atonement, a sacrifice for the people of Israel every year because of their sins

I know that we have been over this verse… I go over it a lot

I think that it is important for us to appreciate the second half of the verse, to know what we are owed

The Old Testament Sacrifice

The need for sacrifice goes all the way back to the first sin in the Garden in

After their sin, Adam and Eve felt shame for the first time

Adam and Eve attempted to cover their sins with leaves

God kicked them out of the garden, but clothed them after the first sacrifice

Ever since, man has been trying to cover himself with things to cover his shame to no avail

the OT law, is God reveling to us our need and what it takes to pay that price

The OT Sacrifices were just a shadow

So the previous command is annulled because it was weak and unprofitable 19 (for the law perfected nothing), but a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.

God had a better plan in mind…

this as a shadow was just to show us our need and what that sacrifice was truly going to have to be

Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, purified once and for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?

Why did Jesus have to die… the sacrifice and blood of the animals could never

the sins were covered, but the worshipper knew in his heart that he was sinful

the writer is not talking about the sacrifice just being a hassle

who wants to have to go back to the temple, year after year

the seventh month on the tenth day, according to

it is because we know that earthly things are insufficient

I might be able to repay somebody a wrong by payment or replacing something

but a holy eternal God cannot be repaid with worldly things

what are we going to give him that he does not already have

He created everything… He owns the cattle on a thousand hills

the OT Sacrifices left us wanting

The Holy Spirit was making it clear that the way into the most holy place had not yet been disclosed while the first tabernacle was still standing.
