D. Pray
E. Context
a. Shepherd is often referred to 2day as a Pastor
1. Some folks wanna combine shepherds & teachers cause the bulk o what we as pastors do 2day is so deeply tied to teaching through sermons & in classroom settings
2. I’m convinced, though, that they r neither inseparable gifts or mutually exclusive
i. Instead, God knows just what a church needs right when the church needs it & so meets that need as HE sees fit.
b. Pastors then, r spiritually empowered 2 equip the church to
1. increase the flock (work o the ministry)
i. Notice Paul doesn’t say that a pastor’s job is to do the work o the ministry, but 2 equip the saints for the ministry
-That is, we train, empower & release the church 2 increase the flock
*doesn’t mean we don’t minister
&...
~I still have a responsibility to make disciples in my going
~but my primary responsibility is to equip the saints
2. We also equip the church to care for & grow the flock in2 spiritual maturity (build up the body)
i. ea o the 5fold min does this in various ways
-so, what’s a pastor?
i. & how r they uniquely gifted 2 equip the church 4 ministry & spiritual growth?
c. Shepherd is def as the supernatural empowering by the Holy Spirit for leading & caring for God’s people
1. Pastor is a spiritual leadership gift-package where the Spirit empowers the shepherd w/multiple spiritual gifts 2 equip ‘em 2 fulfill the calling o God & minister 2 the needs o the flock & the mission & vision God has given 4 that local church
i. The pastor is the local, boots on the ground leader
- He trains the church 4 & oversees the ministry
- & facilitates the growth of the church in2 maturity
* (remember [recite]) If the Evangelists r making disciples, the pastors & teachers r doing the 2nd part: “teaching all Jesus commanded”
2. What is a shepherd?
i. & how r they uniquely gifted 2 equip the church 4 ministry & spiritual growth?
II. BODY
II. BODY
A. The Shepherd’s nature:
Pastors then, equip the church to increase and care for the flock (work o the ministry) & mature spiritually (build up the body!
ea o the 5fold min does this in various ways
a. A shepherd reflects the heart of God
What is a shepherd & how r they uniquely gifted to equip the church for ministry and spiritual growth?
A shepherd reflects the heart of God
Jeremiah
15 “ ‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
1. Who’s the chief Shepherd God would give?
i. Jesus!
Jesus describes hisself as “the Good Shephered”
Ps
-the rest o the pastors that follow r but under-shepherds
2. God wants shepherds that align w/God’s character (that’s what God meant by shepherds after his heart)
A shepherd leads
i. These shepherds will know & understand God through rel w/him
-Then they feed people the same relational knowledge through 1st hand encounters w/God
*We aren’t teaching about God, we’re teaching God by facilitating & creating environments conducive 2 encounters
ii. Getting back to a shepherds heart...
-2 understand what a shepherds heart is like, we must understand the heart o God
-Who here has heard ?
*There David refers 2 God as his shepherd; take a look
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
3. God shepherds by leading
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Ps
i. God’s destination 4 us is green pastures (rest & provision) & still waters (life of peace)
- This, I believe, reflects the other side o eternity
- If a pastor reflects the heart of God, then...
b. Pastors shepherds by leading
1. A pastor’s job is 2 lead the flock as we follow God in2 an eternity spent w/God in paradise (ultimately the new heaven & new earth)
i. ultimately the new heaven & new earth)
i. that’s the destination (the vision), not the path
2. our life often doesn’t reflect green pastures / still waters
i. the path 2 this vision is in following verses (& these paths r what life looks like right now on our way 2 the vision)
3. A pastor leads people in paths of righteousness
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
c. A pastor leads people in paths of righteousness
i. New Covenant righteousness isn’t simply doing the right thing unto God
- It’s loving actions toward others as God sees it
ii. notice it’s for “his name’s sake”
- our loving actions toward others points people back to our shepherd (not me, GOD!)
- doesn’t this sound strangely like “work o the ministry”?
*I don’t want to move on frm this vs w/out looking @the 1st part o the vs: “He restores my soul”
*God is a soul restorer
~r u spiritually broken?
~has life’s circumstances battered u?
~r u far from God?
*God’s desire is 2 restore u!
~restore u to spiritual health
~restore ur rel. w/him & others
iii. Pastors, then, r restorers
-We wanna lead u back 2 God as we continue our journey to the other side o eternity
-We wanna patch up ur spiritual wounds & see u revitalized on the way to the vision
*speaking o the journey & the way...back 2 the path
~The next path we tend to find ourselves on this side o eternity is found in the next vs:
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Ps 23:
4. A pastor leads people through the valleys of the shadow o death
where we face a fam/frnd’s death…or even our own
i. In this life we will often find ourselves on paths through the valley of the shadow o death
ii. the valley o the shadow o death is tragedy, suffering, loss, persecution, betrayal, & yes…even death
- a fam member/frnd’s death…or even our own
iii. Where is the pastor found? - David says o God “you are with me”
-Can I just say, if ur in the valley o the shadow o death, God’s desire is 2 walk WITH u through that
*That’s how God leads while were in tragedy, suffering, loss, etc.
-If a shepherd reflects the heart o God, the shepherd is no longer found leading frm the front, but in the midst o the flock (w/’em)
*comforting & drawing out their courage (remember “I will fear no evil”)
~this brings us back to vs 3 that says, “you restore my soul”
-A pastor is:
*at the bedside o the dying
*in the hospital with the sick
*in the home of the broken hearted
*bandaging up spiritual wounds
-A pastor is:
*weeping w/those who weep
*laughing w/those who laugh
*bearing the flocks burdens
*steering people back toward paths o righteousness
*cheering on those who stumble to get back up…lifting ‘em up when they can’t
&,
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
iv. This is why a pastor must be equipped w/the spiritual gifts o acts of mercy & exhortation!!
B. God’s heart is reflected best in Jesus!
a. Jesus is God in flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
1. Thus a pastor must take his cues from Jesus if we r going 2 pastor effectively:
b. A pastor’s heart reflects Jesus’ compassion
A pastor’s heart reflects Jesus’ (& there4 God’s) compassion
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
1. maybe 2day u feel harassed & helpless
i. Jesus doesn’t look @ u & say come on!! get it 2gether will ya?
ii. He’s filled w/compassion 4 ya & seeks 2 lead u from the sins that break & bind us!!
2. A shepherd sees folks in the middle o crisis & says can I help?
i. They don’t c inconvenience, or 1 more problem…they see folks in need o leading out o those troubles
c. (further taking our cues from Jesus) A pastor leads relationally (speaking o himself Jesus says in…)
John 10:3-4
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
1. Jesus says that he knows ur name!!!
i. that kind o knowing us, leads us to know his voice.
-We refuse to be lead astray by fakes telling us false words
2. If shepherds reflect the heart o Jesus, the congregation trusts the pastor’s leading because the pastor knows them by name!
i. this isn’t about name memorization, but relationship!
d. Jesus describes himself as “the Good Shepherd”
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
1. What makes Jesus good?
i. He loves us by laying down his life
ps 23:
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
i. He puts himself between the enemy & his flock & says, u can’t have ‘em…over my dead body!
2. How does Jesus lay down his life 4 us?
28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;
30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.
31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears.
3. Shepherds, then, lead sacrificially
15 “ ‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
i. He puts himself between the enemy & his flock & says, u can’t have ‘em…over my dead body!
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Matt 9:
3. Shepherds, then, lead sacrificially
i. He puts himself between the enemy & his flock & says, u can’t have ‘em…over my dead body!
