Passage:
6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,
7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.
8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?
9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.”
10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.
11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.
12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial.
13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Title: Jesus Forgets, But What Does He Remember?

Share the story of me and Lucas at Wal-mart ....
Helped a lady who appeared to have truck problem (Battery dead)
While trying to jump her battery we were able to chat .....
Her name was Nancy (raising 2 grandkids on her own) (7th grader and 1 younger)
They lived just down the road from Wal-Mart
Truck full of groceries!
My car battery would not jump her truck.
She called a friend (We waited until he arrived)
His truck jumped her battery and we all went on our merry way.
This was not a major act of kindness.
Not like you would see on (Undercover Boss)
This act was not going to be written down in history books.
But it was going to be remembered by ....
Lucas and I
Nancy and her grandkids
and God! ()

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.

32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.

34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,

36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’

37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?

38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?

39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
God will see them and remember these acts of kindness......
40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Transition Statement: How many of us see the little acts of kindness done to us by our loved ones or people in general?
YOU:
We have acts of kindness done to us every day.
We do acts of kindness to others ever day.
picking up around the house (not being asked to do it)
picking up (not being asked to do it)
giving a hug (not asking for one)
cleaning out the car (not being asked to do it)
paying the dinner bill for everyone
sending a gift card in the mail just saying you were thinking of them.
Turning on the electric blanket before bed time so it will be warm when they get in.
Making dinner for the family
Taking out the trash
Cutting the grass
Stopping by the store for items someone else needs
How many of us realize these things will be recorded in the memory of our heavenly father?
Transition Statement: The bible tells us that these little things will be remembered.
God:
Re-read
13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.
This is an interesting story!
Mary of Bethany
Some scholars believe this is Mary Magdelen (Its not)
Some scholars believe this woman is a prostitute (this is not confirmed)
What we can concluded is the possibility she is Mary, the sister of Lazarus (Mary and Martha)
The setting of this story is the house of Simon the leper!
This woman comes up to Jesus and pours this very expensive flask of ointment over Jesus head.
Mary of Bethany
Some scholars believe this is Mary Magdalene (This is not confirmed)
Some scholars believe this woman is a prostitute (this is not confirmed)
One of the major reasoning of this belief is because of this oil/ointment used in a prostitutes bedroom as well.
What we can concluded is the possibility she is Mary, the sister of Lazarus (Mary and Martha)
We find Jesus is anointed with this ointment.
This is something that is done as a customary act toward visitors: Common form of hospitality.
This was done as a sign of respect and honor, the head of the guest was anointed with oil.
This is also something that is done symbolizing a sacred consescration: (Kings were anointed (I sam 10:1, )
Jesus actually tells them this was done to “prepare (him) me for burial.” (Vs 12)
What we find is the disciples getting upset with this woman.
“WHY THIS WASTE?” (Judas asked this I am sure of it)
ESV translate the disciples as being “Indignant
The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament 23. ἀγανακτέω aganaktéō

aganaktḗsō, from ágan (n.f.), very much, and áchthos (n.f.), pain, grief. To be oppressed in mind, grieved, resentful.

The disciples were resentful of this woman.
Matthew tells us that Jesus questioned the disciples for this resentfulness, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.” (Vs 10)
Jesus says to them, “.... wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” (Vs 13)
I want to point out a couple of things from this story ......
This woman did a “common” “Customary things”
It wasn’t anything extravagant! (Nothing big! Nothing earth shattering!)
We have pastor’s, churches, people trying to do the next BIG THING for Jesus!
They no longer are doing the “common” “Customary Things” for Jesus
This woman did what “someone else” should have done!
Simon should have been the one anointing Jesus with the customary ointment!
(It was HIS House)
This woman was “Scolded” () Indignant ()
We came to understand that she was resented for doing what was suppose to be done in the first place.
This woman was to be remembered for this “common” “Customary Act” for ever.
Here is what is interesting .....
Her act will be remembered but her name is not of great importance!
She will stand before Jesus and he will remember this “Common Act”
Transition Statement: Have you ever thought about what will Jesus judge us on the day of judgement?
YOU:
I have to believe that it will be the little acts of service ...... the small “common” “customary acts” that we have done throughout our lives.
How we treated that stranger, that homeless person ....
How we responded to our kids, our spouse, our co workers, our neighbor, our boss!
How we treated someone when no one else was looking .....
What we thought of people!
Why do I think this? .....
Look at the list of “Fruits of the spirit”
Gal. 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
These are the things Jesus tells us that will be recorded in HIS MEMORY!
This is what will matter the most (What Jesus remembers not what others remember)
I don’t think we will be able to give an excuse for not doing them.
People resented me for doing these kind acts.
The scolded me so I stopped doing them.
Well nobody else is doing them.
Just because someone else is not doing what they are suppose to doesn’t give us the free card to no do it as well.
I think what Jesus is most interested in is us doing the small “Common” “customary acts.”
These are what will be etched in Jesus memory concerning us!
Transition Statement: What impact would this have on our world: doing “common” “Customary Acts”
WE:
Not trying to be remembered for the BIG things but living out the small (sometimes unnoticed) acts.
Not waiting on someone else to do it (Even if they were suppose to do it).
Not allowing the resentment of others to stop us from doing what should be done.
Not worried about our name being remembered but our actions.
How would it change you if you came to realize that the things Jesus is going to remember will be the “Common” :customary acts” we do in our lives.
