The ministry of the Holy Spirit

• He exalts Christ

• John 16:13-14—what He does

• I Cor. 12—how He does it

Summary of gifts—I Corinthians 12:4-11

Their divine origin—vv. 4-6 (Notice the Trinitarian work)

• Holy Spirit—v. 4: 1) Diversities (v. 4)—to distribute out (portion out); 2) The portioned out gifts are also diverse (variety); 3) “Gifts”—the basis of the portioning is grace—this gets defined in vv. 5-6

• Lord (Christ)—v. 5: 1) “Administrations”—synonym for gifts; 2) It is the word for service (any kind)

• God (Father)—v. 6: 1) “Operations”—the English word is energy

• A Gift is . . . 1) A portioning out by God; 2) For service to Him; 3) The way we serve is with divinely portioned energy. Your function primarily as a Christian in the body of Christ is to use your gift.

Their single aim—v. 7

• All kinds of gifts

• Purpose—“profit all”—compound word: 1) To carry; 2) Together; 3) Idea is mutual benefit

Their diverse nature—vv. 8-11

Organizing gifts into a pattern

• The needs of the mind: 1) The ability to communicate—v. 8: a) Logos—doctrine or power to communicate doctrine; b) Some have the power to communicate knowledge and other wisdom: a) Knowledge—focus in on facts; b) Wisdom—skill to use the facts; 2) The ability of appropriation—v. 9.

Gift

• It is an ability

• A God-given ability

• If extraordinary proportion
