Parenting Principles (Part 1)
Judges 13--emphasis on Samson’s parents
• Cooperative effort
• The husband takes the lead
• It is assumed the parents set direction of life
Proverbs 13:24
The delinquent parent
• The missing element
o “Spares”--to withhold (habitual action)
1) Knowingly
2) Unknowingly
o “Rod”—ideas involved:
1) Corporal punishment
2) Tender care
3) Establish the concept of authority
• Errant attitude—“hates his son”
1) The word is used comparatively
2) Idea—you don’t truly love him/her
3) We view our children as to how we FEEL
4) God views as to how we ACT toward them
The disciplining parent
• Chasten/discipline
1) Correction (shows where wrong)
2) Punishment
• Betimes (diligently)
1) Literally “to be black”
2) Word used of early morning hours
3) Point--start discipline early on in life
Proverbs 17:6
• Children in the OT are not viewed as accidents or nuisance
• They are viewed as gifts from God (and they are)
• “The glory--anything you reel in
• Fathers are a subject of boasting by sons
• That makes example of VITAL IMPORTANCE!
