The Kingdom of God is here

The Kingdom of God is here

the KINGDOM OF GOD is anywhere God Reigns
The time for his public ministry has come.
Context:
Matthew 4:17 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The time for his public ministry has come.
The time for his public ministry has come.
FROM THAT TIME…what came BEFORE?
Jesus has just done battle with Satan in the Desert:
Jesus is led by the SPIRIT into the desert for 40 days of tempation by the devil ()
WE ARE IN A WAR
And this is like an EPIC BATTLE between GOOD AND EVIL
Think RED LIGHT SABER and GREE LIGHT SABER - as they SPAR OVER THE WORD OF GOD.
Matthew 4:11 ESV
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
This is the same way that John the Bapitzer opened up his ministry:
MEANS: Jesus and John preached the same message.
MEANS: Jesus preached the same message of the OT.
Matthew 3:1–2 ESV
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
WE ARE IN A WAR
REPENT
This means to TURN BACK TO REIGN OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE
to CHANGE ALLEGIENCES
JESUS is saying:
REPENT (TURN BACK TO GOD) B/C THE KING HAS COME AND THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS NEAR
MEANS: It is here in your midst.
MEANS: Turning to God is NOW possible b/c of JESUS.
Lord’s Prayer:
Matthew 6:10 ESV
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
EVERY KINGDOM HAS A KING
Last week: POLITICS was the BATTLE GROUND BTWN KINGDOM OF THIS WORLD AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
King (ruler) of this world - Satan
- We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
King of Heaven - Jesus
Jesus has just done battle with Satan in the Desert:
Jesus is led by the SPIRIT into the desert for 40 days of tempation by the devil ()
And this is like an EPIC BATTLE between GOOD AND EVIL
Think RED LIGHT SABER and GREE LIGHT SABER - as they SPAR OVER THE WORD OF GOD.
We TOO are in a WAR
Matthew 6:10 ESV
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
We are in a WAR
But this is not GAME OF THRONES
It’s a BATTLE FOR ETERNAL DESTINIES.
Jesus and the Kingdom of God and Satan and the Kingdom of this World.
D-DAY came at the CROSS — VE DAY will come when JESUS returns and we have ULTIMATE VICTORY
When GOD CAME to EARTH in the person JESUS CHRIST the KINGDOM OF GOD began on EARTH

This is the CALL TO EVERYONE in this ROOM.
Is Jesus your KING?
Matthew 4:17 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Are you CITIZENS of the KINGDOM?
IS JESUS YOUR SAVIOR KING?
ARE YOU CITIZENS OF THE KINGDOM?

Matthew 3:2 ESV
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
John Prepares the way for Jesus ()
John baptizes Jesus in the Jordan ()
SO THAT all RIGHTEOUSNESS WOULD BE FULFILLED ()
Matthew 3:15 ESV
15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
And this is like an EPIC BATTLE between GOOD AND EVIL
Think RED LIGHT SABER and GREE LIGHT SABER - as they SPAR OVER THE WORD OF GOD.
Matthew 3:13 ESV
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
This brings us to

Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with this statement

What did it mean to preach the Kingdom of heaven is near?

Zoom into
Luke 4:16–19 ESV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Jesus is the King (anointed)
It is a Spirit Filled Kingdom
It’s about Good news (Gospel) to the Poor
It involves being sent
It’s about Proclaiming:

liberty to the oppressed
To Proclaim the year of the Lord’s Favor

The stunning news of

The long awaited hope
The audacious claim of Jesus.
Got him rejected here and ultimately killed.

Read the gospels, the Sermon on the Mount’
Preaching
Salvation is found in Him.
Diff between Teaching and Preaching
Healing
Word is Therapeu - word we get Therapy for.
Every Disease: illness, sickness, disease
Every Affliction: weakness, infirmory, disability

THE KINGDOM LIFE ()

I have a block quote here that I will try to use.
EVERY KINGDOM HAS A KING
King (ruler) of this world? - Satan
King of Heaven? - Jesus
Lord’s Prayer:
Matthew 6:10 ESV
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
We are in a WAR
But this is not GAME OF THRONES
It’s a BATTLE FOR ETERNAL DESTINIES.
John 5:19b ESV
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
1 John 5:19b ESV

THE KINGDOM LIFE ()

1. JESUS CALLED HIS DISCIPLES ()

This was the SIMPLE MESSAGE OF JESUS
A call to TURN BACK TO GOD.
He make the EXACT SAME CALL he just makes it PERSONAL.
Matthew 4:17–22 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
MATT 4:
Matthew 4:18–22 ESV
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
He calls out to Peter and Andrew:
MATT 4:18-22
Matthew 4:18–22 ESV
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Matthew 4:19–20 ESV
19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
This was the SIMPLE MESSAGE OF JESUS

A call to TURN BACK TO GOD.
FOLLOWING JESUS = REPENTING = TURNING TO GOD
He make the EXACT SAME CALL he just makes it PERSONAL.
FOLLOWING JESUS = REPENTING = TURNING TO GOD
And they immediately follow. (v.20)
FOLLOWING JESUS = REPENTING = TURNING TO GOD
#1 - MEANS: PERSONALLY RESPONDING TO THE CALL OF JESUS.

2. JESUS WENT (w/ his disciples) ()

The 2nd THING WE SEE IS JESUS GOING.
and PRESUMABLY his discipling FOLLOWING.
Matthew 4:23 ESV
23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
What was Jesus DOING as he was GOING?
Matthew 4:23 ESV
23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
Teaching, Preaching and Healing.

I. Teaching

What did he teach?
Read the gospels — Matthew in particular
The Sermon on the Mount — directly follows this.
He taught about what it meant to follow God.
Much like many of the TOPICS WE’VE COVERED IN THIS SERIES.
SALT & LIGHT
Religion, Injustice, The Poor, Money, Work, Sexuality, Sexual Identity, Gender Identity, Marriage and Singleness and Politics.
These all came out of JESUS’ Teaching.
Where did Jesus TEACH?
The places of worship (SYNAGOGUE)
MEANS: GATHER AS THE CHURCH FOR TEACHING
MEANS: TEACH WHEREVER A PLACE OF WORSHIP:
We are always worshipping
Places of Worship:
University
Workplace
Football Stadium
Bar
Public Sphere
Always a place for teaching the way of God.

II. Preaching (Proclaiming - kergyma) ()

What did JESUS PREACH?
Luke actually gives us a SCENE FROM JESUS MINISTRY AT THIS TIME:
Luke 4:16–19 ESV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
it says that Jesus w/d into Galilee.
Luke 4:16–20 ESV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
Luk

Jesus is about to EXPOSIT the OT specifically
What he is about to say will get HIM KILLED
There is a DIFFERENCE btwn PREACHING and TEACHING
Preaching is EXPLICITLY EXALTING CHRIST and calling for a RESPONSE.
matt
PREACHING always fixes our eyes on Jesus
Luke 4:20–21 ESV
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
:
Jesus is about the UNPACK THIS TEXT
Luke 4:21 ESV
21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Preaching is EXPLICITLY EXALTING CHRIST and calling for a RESPONSE.
This is a massively significant statement:
The audacious claim of Jesus
The long awaited hope
The audacious claim of Jesus.
Got him rejected here and ultimately killed.
Jesus says I AM THIS FIGURE.

What does the Kingdom look like?

The CONTEXT in ISAIAH is that this figure is the LONG AWAITED MESSIAH
The SAVIOR, the ANOINTED ONE
WHAT JESUS SAYING ABOUT HIMSELF?
GOSPEL

What does the Kingdom look like?

I am the MESSIAH
The CONTEXT in ISAIAH is that this figure is the LONG AWAITED MESSIAH
The SAVIOR, the ANOINTED ONE
“ because he has anointed me”
I am FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me”
I will PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR
“to proclaim good news to the poor”
I will PREACH LIBERTY (FORGIVENESS) TO THE CAPTIVES
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives”
I will GIVE SIGHT TO THE BLIND
“ and recovering of sight to the blind”
Satan has BLINDED those of this world.
“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
I will FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED
It involves being sent
“ set at liberty those who are oppressed”
Demon Oppression
Colossians 2:13–15 ESV
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
I will PREACH THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR (ACCEPTANCE)
It’s about Proclaiming:
It’s about Proclaiming:
“19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
liberty to the captives
Preaching is EXPLICITLY EXALTING CHRIST and calling for a RESPONSE.
They RESPOND - ready to throw him off a cliff
Luke 4:28–30 ESV
28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.
Do you know what the very next verse in Isaiah is?
sight to the blind
“and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn”
to comfort all who mourn;
Isaiah 61:2 ESV
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn;

liberty to the oppressed
To Proclaim the year of the Lord’s Favor
Why does he LEAVE THAT OUT?
When is the DAY OF VENGEANCE?
Jubilee
When Jesus returns. Until then it is the Year (time period) of the Lord’s Favor.

Who is the King?

The stunning news of
He rolls up the Scroll — MEANING:
The eyes were all FIXED on him
And he said:
“Today (this day) this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing”
We’ve got to build to this moment.
The long awaited hope
The audacious claim of Jesus.
Got him rejected here and ultimately killed.
Salvation is found in Him.
Salvation is found in Him.
Diff between Teaching and Preaching
Preaching is about EXALTING CHRIST and CALLING FOR A RESPONSE.
They respond…they want to KILL HIM

III. Healing

Matthew 4:23 ESV
23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
Word is Therapeu - word we get Therapy for.
Every Disease: illness, sickness, mental, physical
Every Affliction: weakness, infirmory, disability
POINT: Jesus has the ability to heal all of you, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually: to make you WHOLE.
Isaiah 53:5 “by his wounds we are healed.”
We see JESUS doing just this ALL THROUGHOUT THE GOSPELS.
This is a SUMMARY VERSE of all that Matthew will say in his GOSPEL.

3. HIS FAME SPREAD ()

What HAPPENS NEXT?
Matthew 4:24 ESV
24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them.
“So his fame spread throughout all Syria”
24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria
When the NAME OF JESUS is lifted up and the POWER OF JESUS is shown
His FAME SPREADS!
Throughout Syria, which as significantly to the north of Galilee.
This was likely the area just north of Galilee
CHURCH this is WHY WE ARE HERE!
to SPEAD the FAME of the NAME OF JESUS.

4. THEY BROUGHT PEOPLE TO JESUS ()

Matthew 4:24 ESV
24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them.
This is the natural reaction when we meet Jesus.
When we are healed by him, taught by him and preached the gospel.
Invitations to Church
POINT: People are nearer to Jesus when they are nearer to you.
Into your GROUPS
1:1 conversations
My conversation this week — bringing someone to Jesus
God was already at work in him.
POINT: People are nearer to Jesus when they are nearer to you.
“have you given your whole life to him?”
WHO WAS BROUGHT?
Those who have been harmed by others (the sick) — Kakws
Those who have been harmed by others (the sick) — Kakws
Those who experience - abuse, sexual, mental, emotional
Those afflicted with diseases (same word as in v. 23)
And pains - meaning deep anguish, suffering, torment.
Those oppressed by demons
“locked in, held prisoner” ct:
Those having seizures
Those who are Paralytics
And HE HEALED THEM
PIONT: All have value for Jesus.
POINT: Jesus heals all kinds of things.
He makes people whole.
This is the ‘inbreaking’ of the kingdom.
This is the KOG being ‘at hand’.

5. GREAT CROWDS FOLLOWED HIM ()

Matthew 4:25 ESV
25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
The Kingdom Grows:Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, Beyond the Jordan
Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, Beyond the Jordan
BUT WAIT: THE CROWDS ARE NOT THE KINGDOM
Just B/C a crowd has gathered doesn’t mean we have TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS.

HOW THE KINGDOM GROWS

Do you know HOW JESUS ministry ended?
Do you know HOW JESUS ministry ended?
Maybe 100 people following him
Smaller than this Church.
We see this in , thousands come to HIM
John 6:26–27 ESV
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
We see this in , thousands come to HIM
“Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. But once he talks about drinking his blood and eating his flesh many turn away?
You mean I can’t just consume?
Communion is all about Intimacy with Jesus
It is a deep interaction with him.
You symbolic take his life and blood into your own body
This is UNION
It means we are nothing w/out the sustaining power of JESUS
Jesus changes us from the INSIDE OUT
The WORLD HATES THAT.
They LOVED WHAT JESUS COULD GIVE THEM not who JESUS WAS
FURTHERMORE Jesus teaches us how the Kingdom will grow.
FURTHERMORE Jesus teaches us how the Kingdom will grow.
Slowly () - like a mustard seed

HOW THE KINGDOM GROWS

HOW THE KINGDOM GROWS
HOW THE KINGDOM GROWS
ully ()
Slowly
Fully () - like leaven in a loaf
The Kingdom is of INFINITE WORTH () -
selling everything, valuable treasure
Supernaturally
It will be mixed with wheat and weeds () -
those who love Jesus and those who do not.
There will be a Harvest ()
Supernaturally
The day of judgment (VE Day) - chaff & wheat, goats & sheet
Do we LOVE THE KING or only what the KING CAN GIVE?
It will be mixed with wheat and weeds
There will be a harvest

CLOSING EXHORATION

So let me close on this:
All that we have talked about over these last 11 weeks.
Jesus doesn’t want an AUDIENCE he wants an ARMY.
ARE YOU A CITIZEN OF THE KINGDOM OR ARE YOU JUST CAROULING IN A CROWD?
Don’t just sit in the STANDS but GET IN THE GAME.
ARE YOU A CITIZEN OF THE SAVIOR KING OR ARE YOU JUST HANGING OUT IN A CROWD?
“Repent, turn, for the Kingdom of Heaven is here”
“Follow me”
GIVE YOUR WHOLE LIFE TO HIM.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN THAT THE KOG IS NEAR?

let’s pray.

PRAY

What does the Kingdom look like?

Jesus is the King (anointed)
It is a Spirit Filled Kingdom
It’s about Good news (Gospel) to the Poor
It involves being sent
It’s about Proclaiming:
liberty to the captives
sight to the blind
liberty to the oppressed
To Proclaim the year of the Lord’s Favor
Jubilee

Who is the King?

The stunning news of
He rolls up the Scroll — MEANING:
The eyes were all FIXED on him
And he said:
“Today (this day) this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing”
This is a massively significant statement:
We’ve got to build to this moment.
The long awaited hope
The audacious claim of Jesus.
Got him rejected here and ultimately killed.
