Joshua 1:10-18
10 Joshua then commanded the officers of Israel, 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people to get their provisions ready. In three days you will cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you.”
12 Then Joshua called together the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. He told them, 13 “Remember what Moses, the servant of the Lord, commanded you: ‘The Lord your God is giving you a place of rest. He has given you this land.’ 14 Your wives, children, and livestock may remain here in the land Moses assigned to you on the east side of the Jordan River. But your strong warriors, fully armed, must lead the other tribes across the Jordan to help them conquer their territory. Stay with them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has given you rest, and until they, too, possess the land the Lord your God is giving them. Only then may you return and settle here on the east side of the Jordan River in the land that Moses, the servant of the Lord, assigned to you.”
16 They answered Joshua, “We will do whatever you command us, and we will go wherever you send us. 17 We will obey you just as we obeyed Moses. And may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey your words and everything you command will be put to death. So be strong and courageous!”
So now Joshua is leading the charge through the doors of Canaan, right into the heart of the Canaanites. and four major mentoring events are happening here that will help you become a better mentor / mentee.
The first event is, we see Joshua now accepting his role as the leader or the mentor to other leaders. verses 10/11
To be a great mentor you must give clear, concise, directives with an objective for the end goal.
This is important because in the end all the objectives must line up to complete the task.
This is important because in the end all the objectives must line up to complete the goal. If the goal is to make a book then you don’t try to make a pencil or a pen. You make the book. Not that the pencil doesn’t have value, it’s just not what the goal is for that particular piece of writing materials.
Great mentors understand the value of others strengths and abilities, not just their own abilities. verses 12-15
Legacy is life changing, that leads to long lasting, limitless possibilities.
It’s not about what you can get for yourself and screw everyone else! Great Mentors / Mentees understand the value in each other.
Give the illustration of a coach, what he/she does and does not do.
Great mentors are followed and fashioned after.
Joshua says in verse 13a. / They say in verse 17.
What better example do you need to fashion after then Jesus. He tell’s his disciples to follow me 22 times!
Because mentors are human, they need encouragement and love by the mentees and have the mentees full commitment.
There is a strong play on words in verses 17b. / 18a. Mentees are pointing out that Gos is with Joshua and so therefore they are following his every move closely.

Great Mentors exude great amounts of patience, but are very particular. Verses 15

Great Mentees make every attempt to master and mature. Verse 18
Great Mentees make every attempt to master and mature.
Money and power are not the motivating factor, multiplication is. verses10/11
“This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. 18 “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. 19 Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people’s representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. 20 Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. 21 But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten. 22 They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you. 23 If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.”
24 Moses listened to his father-in-law’s advice and followed his suggestions. 25 He chose capable men from all over Israel and appointed them as leaders over the people. He put them in charge of groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten. 26 These men were always available to solve the people’s common disputes. They brought the major cases to Moses, but they took care of the smaller matters themselves.
27 Soon after this, Moses said good-bye to his father-in-law, who returned to his own land.
Some mentors are seasonal and can come in and out of your life.
