Sermon Tone Analysis

Any group needs leadership, not just a leader.

This is certainly true in the church.

That is why every church needs qualified elders.

Nehemiah is a good example of leadership.

We will examine the qualities that made him a good leader.

I) Felt the burden

Realized great need – – concerned about the happenings in Palestine – ; – mourned the failure of God’s people, as did Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel – do we mourn failures in the local churches (division, failure to appoint elders and deacons, little depth)?

Took up the responsibility – – as Isaiah – – good leaders lead by example, not command

Did not seek to blame others – – although there was plenty to go around; 92 years since first return

Driven in his duty – – which inspires others

II) Informed the people

Told of plans – – set up lines of communication

Communication must be two-way: revealing and listening – ; – good elders will always be transparent in their plans

III) Deserved respect

Two types of respect: granted by position or other influence, and earned by deeds

Wisdom – – wise leader prepares for known and unforeseen dangers – ;

Honesty – – integrity stands out, especially in midst of corruption

IV) Set goals

Getting walls built –

End usury –

Restored worship –

Purified the people –

A local church should set goals to strive for, that are controllable and achievable
