B. Where We’re Going
C. Main Text
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
D. Prayer
E. Context
a. Teacher/teaching is the only gift mentioned in 3 outa 4 lists:
1. , ro 12:7, & our main text
2. It’s a pivotal gift package
i. these leaderships r like a gift package: several gifts combined 2 fulfill the office o teacher
II. BODY
A. Spiritual Leadership Gift: Teachers
a. The Supernatural empowering by the Holy Spirit for instruction regarding the triune God & His ways
1. This is a Spirit empowered, supernatural gift
i. This is not 1’s natural ability 2 teach
-some folks have natural building blocks o a teahcer
*They use great methods, wonderful story telling, but aren’t spirit empowered
ii. More over, there r lots o good teachers who don’t know Jesus,
-these r not spirit empowered because they don’t have God’s spirit in 'em
-Only followers o Jesus have God’s spirit living in 'em
*& only those Jesus followers who have been baptized in the H.S. have Spiritual gifts activated in their lfie
2. This is not just teaching folks what u learned about God’s word over the course o time
i. We should all be discipling folks based on what we’re learning frm God’s spirit
3. The Teacher is the office a person is called 2 which God’s spirit empowers her/him 2 effectively instruct accurately.
i. That is, a spirit empowered teacher is instructing accurately (right teaching) & effectively (Spirit produced fruit)
ii. What is a teacher instructing by the prompting & empowering o the H.S.?
-All that Jesus commanded
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
-All that Jesus commanded
-If the evangelist is the disciple maker, the teacher (like the pastor) is the disciple-er
*So, what all did Jesus command?
-The primary (if not singular) command Jesus gave is love!
* “Love one another” (Jn 15:12)
* “Love God w/ur whole being & ur neighbor as ur self” (mk 12:20-21)
* “they will know that you are my disciples by ur love for 1another” (jn 13:35)
-The Spirit empowered teacher instructs on how to live out Christ’s love daily
4. The instruction Paul gives for teachers is found in...
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Jn 14:26
1. Helper here means exhorter/exhortation.
i. The Spirit teaches the teacher & brings this teaching 2mind @ just the right time!
-we all can (& should) experience H.S. encouraging us in this way, but...
* This is the regular experience o the 1 empowered by the H.S. called to the gift & office o Teaching
c. The instruction Paul gives for teachers is found in...
7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;
i. In vs 6 Paul said “having gifts that differ”
-meaning, the 1 who teaches should utilize the gift o teaching as he teaches.
ii. the word in the phrase “the 1 who teaches, in his teaching”...
-“teaching” here means doctrine, suggesting that Paul is saying,
- The one who teaches should utilize the spiritual gift instructing in sound doctrine!
b. The Holy Spirit helps the teacher
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
1. Helper here means exhorter/exhortation.
i. The Spirit teaches the teacher & brings this teaching 2mind @ just the right time!
-we all can (& should) experience H.S. encouraging us in this way, but...
* This is the regular experience o the 1 empowered by the H.S. called to the gift & office o Teaching
ii. In this Gift the teacher does so powerfully! & the H.S. softens the heart o the hearer & speaks 2 the person’s heart for understanding & max impact
-That doesn’t mean that the hearer can’t turn around & finally reject the teaching / that the teaching won’t b overcome by the word
*Remember Jesus’ teaching on the seeds & soil?
* Let’s talk about...
B. Characteristics o Spirit empowered teaching
a. Spirit empowered teaching equips & builds up
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Eph 4:12
1. If the teaching is not practical enough 2 equip, I don’t believe it 2 b Spirit empowered
2. If the teaching is condemning, intended 2 tear down / b critical it’s not from God’s Spirit
i. Remember, that Jesus describes the Spirit as the helper (meaning exhorter/encourager) in !
ii. That doesn’t mean that every teaching is going to feel good, but it should “call 2 God’s side” as the word exhortation/encourager is literally defined!!!
-Spirit empowered teaching should NEVER draw people away frm God
*The word may be difficult
*It may be painful
*it may draw 1 to repentance
~But it will never tear down!!!
b. Spirit empowered teaching gives stability
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
1. It will be consistent, accurate & allow the church 2 become grounded in trusting JESUS!!!
i. Bad doctrine can b enticing…taught w/cunning & scheming!
-Hitler was a powerful orator, causing many 2 murder & thought they were doing the right thing
-just cause it sounds nice, smart, or moving doesn’t necessarily mean it’s frm God!
ii. H.S. empowered teaching will never cause a person 2 question the truth o who Jesus is/what he did & what that means 4 us
iii. Spirit empowered teaching should result in deep rooted stability in Christ as the solid rock we stand on
-Hitler was a powerful orator, causing many 2 murder & thought they were doing the right thing
-
2. the word doctrine here means sound teaching.
i. this is not just any trustworthy saying, but is Gospel truth
the word doctrine here means sound teaching.
-not as true as the Gospel but the truth o the Gospel
c. Spirit empowered teaching waters by reviving & refreshing the learner.
6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.
7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor.
9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
1. Context
i. Paul is dealing w/folks rallying around a leader causing division in the church
-Which Paul is addressing, by saying, “y’all r being silly. it’s not about the human leader, but God’s leadership”
ii. I also know that there’s the teaching suggesting that the planter & waterer r doing the same task (telling non-christians about Jesus)
-Not bad teaching, but I think there might b a more robust meaning Paul is on about
2. Paul made the disciples (planted) & Apollos followed up by watering (taught what Jesus Commanded)
i. I believe Apollos here was called & empowered by God’s Spirit 2 teach.
ii. These 2 ministers (planters & waterers) work as 1 to c folks accept Jesus & grow in2 the people God designed ‘em 2 b.
2. One makes the disciple, the next waters the Disciple & God partners in the process 2 make the disciple grow!
i. The process o watering refreshes & revives the learner
3. (I read this story frm Kenneth Hangin & was so moved I had 2 share it) Illust: a disciple properly watered
i. A minister of the gospel was ministering in an area of the US well known 4 greenhouses & nurseries.
ii. An elderly gentleman in the church invited the visiting minister 2 c the greenhouse where he tended the plants.
-The minister was amazed @ what he saw. He said, “I’ve never seen such luxurious growth.”
iii. 2yrs later the minister was back in the area & asked 2b taken 2 the greenhouse again.
-“The minute I walked inside,” he said, “I could tell something was wrong.”
-It was the same greenhouse w/the same kinds o plants. But they just weren't as luxurious.
*There was a remarkable difference.
-“It’s not like it was 2yrs ago. What happened?” he asked the attendants.
-They answered, “The gentleman who cared r the plants & watered 'em correctly died. We have some1 else doing it now.”
iv. When the watering process — that is, the teaching of the Word of God — is carried out by a spiritual gift o 1 called & empowered 2 teach, it leaves people refreshed & revived, just as watering a plant leaves it revived & fresh.
-Many works of God have been ruined because the watering process wasn’t there 2 encourage people 2 draw close to the Lord.
v. Remember, there’s no growth 4 those who don't remain in Jesus & he in us
-Jesus said in...
5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
kinds of plants. But they just were not as luxurious. There was a remarkable difference. “It’s not like it was two years ago. What happened?” he asked the attendants. They knew what was wrong. They answered, “The older gentleman who cared for the plants and watered them correctly died. We have someone else doing it now.” b. Many a work of God has been ruined because the watering process wasn’t there to encourage people to cleave to the Lord and to become a beautiful garden for God. c. When the watering process — that is, the teaching of the Word of God — is carried out by a spiritual gift because one is called and endowed to teach, it leaves people refreshed and revived, just as watering a plant leaves it revived and fresh.
-Spirit empowered teaching aids in the process o disciples remaining in Jesus & He in us causing the disciple to bear fruit in & through her/him
-When the watering process — that is, the teaching of the Word of God — is carried out by a spiritual gift because 1 is called & empowered 2 teach, it leaves people refreshed & revived, just as watering a plant leaves it revived & fresh.

*Who was the greatest teacher o the NT?
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Ministry Gifts . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;
C. Jesus was the greatest Spirit empowered teacher
22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
a. Jesus, & therefore people called & empowered by H.S. teach w/authority which comes from the Spirit
b. Jesus taught about what it means to follow him, What the Kingdom was like & how we are to enter it
c. Jesus used Parables & other teaching methods 4 max impact
1. He used Hyperbole, humor, signs, & wonders 2 make his point & capture the hearts o his audience
d. But what matters most isn’t the teacher’s craft, it’s the Spirit’s guidance & empowering
