I Am Who You Say I Am
I Am Who You Say I Am
Intro
Tonight our last Hello my name is card, we are going to fill it out at the end.
As we wrap up our series called Hacked, let us look back on where we have come.
The first week we talked about what others think of us and what we say about ourselves.
The second week we dove into our past, and had talked about what our past said about us and what we hope our future will say.
There are many voices that shape our identity.
I know very little about music, yet since coming to Bethel I have had to dabble a little with the soundboard and trying to understand music.
Know I don’t know if you know this or not but those playing instruments up here have something in their ears that helps them stay on track with the band.
They are called in-ear monitors.
These in-ears help the band stay together.
Everyone has the ability to decide what they want to come into their in-ear system.
Are you tracking with me?
Not every in-ear is the same, some may like to hear the guitar more, or the keys, or maybe they want to hear Austin’s Angel like voice more.
They all have a choice on who they allow into their ears.
There are many voices that are fighting to be heard by use.
Each of us get to decide what we allow to come into our ears.
We all get this in-ear monitor and we must calibrate the voices we let in.
Of course you decide this it could like this:
More boss and less past
More spouse less Dad
Maybe you need more teachers and less friends.
More mentor, less social media
More Jesus, less of everything else
While it may be tempting to push the mute button on all those additional voices, sometimes all that is required in for us to adjust what we are letting in.
Don’t mute your coach, your teachers, your mom, or your pastor, but you may need to turn them down.
I do not know the perfect mix for you.
However, however loud God is in your life, turn it up louder.
We know this to be true that even the good voices can cloud the voice that we most desperately need to hear— The voice of God.
“Your identity is the right identity when you let it be defined by what God says about you.”
Tonight we are looking at the most important aspect of our identity.
Who does God say we are?
To answer this we are going to turn to 1 Peter.
actually.
Before we do that let look at the book of 1st Peter as a whole.
The book was written by a guy named.... that right George… No just kidding, it was by Peter.
Peter was a follower of Jesus.
Jesus had 12 disciples that he spent a great amount of time with and he had about 3 disciples that he spent a ton of time with, as they were his inner circle.
Peter was a part of that inner circle.
Peter is a incredibly interesting person of the Bible.
If you do not know who he is read the Gospels, the first four books of the Bible, and Act and you will get a goo picture of who this dude was.
But since we do not have time to go through all of that let us hit the highlights of Peter.
Peter was personally called by Jesus to follow after him.
Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Mark 1:
Peter was able to see Jesus in all of his glory as something we call the transfiguration.
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Peter proclaimed who God was.
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Peter was bold and got out of the boat and walked on water to Jesus.
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He was one of the first to see that the tomb was empty! Jesus’ body was gone!
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
John 20:2-
He got beat in a foot race but only John was keep track of that.
Peter would go on to be filled by the Holy Spirit and he would lead thousands to know Jesus.
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:
Peter did some amazing things;
But Peter I think like you and I made some identity shaking mistakes.
While Peter got out of the boat to walk to Jesus, he was over taken by his fear.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
Peter who proclaimed Jesus as Lord, would also deny Him not once but 3 times.
And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Luke 22:55-
How about when Paul confronted Peter to his face because Peter was being a hypocrite.
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
Galatians 2:11-
I think it is far to say that despite Peter’s failures God used him in a mighty way.
I believe that despite our failures, God can use you in a mighty way.
Why?
says this:
then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.
Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones,
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
God chooses the rejected
God chooses the rejected
Lets back up just a bit to the start of chapter 2
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:4-
This world may reject you, they will tear you down, they will make you bleed, and they will make you cry, they will come at you!
but listen to this LISTEN:
AS YOU COME TO THE LORD… It may be on hands and knees with nothing left in the tank....
REJECT by people!
IN THE SIGHT OF GOD YOU ARE CHOSEN AND PRECIOUS.
Tell the person next to you that you are chosen and precious.
If you believe this to be true this STOP WALKING AROUND AS A VICTIM.
YOU ARE CHOSEN LOVED ONES.
God is using you as living stones to build up his Kingdom!
So honor him, if you believe in Him, If you believe in the stone that was rejected by men who was Jesus, if you believe in Jesus as your Lord and savior, honor God.
For those who do not believe.
Verse 8
They will stumble over the rock— They will trip over Jesus, know
that stone that was rejected— He will be a rock of offense.
They will stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
BUT you believer— you are a chosen race.
“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
Deut
This promise that was made to the Israelites means the same to us
But not only are we chosen people but we are royalty- a royal priesthood.
and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
Exodus
but you shall be called the priests of the Lord;
they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
and in their glory you shall boast.
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
Isa 6
The priest had such an important role in the OT:
“But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.
The priest had such an important role in the OT:
Exodus
A priest is required to act as a mediator. He is one who represents the Divine being (AKA GOD) to His subjects and in return from them to God. He acts as an ambassador, a chosen vehicle through whom Yahweh God has chosen to serve the people and represent Him, on His behalf.
In Exodus this applies to Israel who God made this convent with.
The royal priest were to show that God had no rival, they were to show the other nations the glory of GOD.
Yet they failed over and over again.
HOWEVER, God’s kingdom of priest those who believe consist of the Church of Christ.
It too is to mediate God’s blessing to the nations, as it proclaims the Gospel.
We are called a holy nation.
“But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.
Exodus 22:
The church of Jesus is a group of people who are set apart for the Lord.
We get to enjoy the special favor that comes with that.
ILLUSTRATE:
You know how you get special privileges from certain people.
My senior year, I got special privileges from my gym teacher.
I did whatever I wanted, and if others tried to do what I did guess what— Good to the office that is a zero for today!
It feels pretty cool to get special treatment and God’s is the best kind of special treatment you can get.
The next phrase is, A people for His own possession.
This term is found in
“They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.
We are God’s treasured possession.
What do we do with treasured possessions?
We keep it close
We take care of it
We wipe off any blunder
We love and value it
All of this boils down to this:
The privileges that use to only be for Israel now belong to the church of Jesus Christ.
This fulfills the promise made to Israel.
Grab a mirror
NO LONGER ARE YOUR WORDS: Slut, rejected, lair......
You are CHOSEN, YOU ARE LOVED, YOU ARE HIS POSSESSION!
YOU ARE VAULED
No matter what the world says:
What do we do now with: We tell others about how GOOD- NO HOW GREAT- NO HOW INCREDIBLE OUR GOD IS!
We tell of the marvelous light
We tell of the marvelous light
We are aa chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, THAT you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
We would be mistake to read this passage and not look back to
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Light becomes a reality here.
Darkness was present—but God spoke and the light shined.
In your past— when the darkness was present— God has called you from that darkness and into his marvelous light.
The apostle Paul points to this same truth, this same picture of conversion is seen in .
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
This illustration of one going from darkness into light is often talked about in the new testament.
to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Ephepsians
But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.
For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
God’s word creates light just like in Genesis
God’s call creates faith.
You have been called into the light.
So be the light that Jesus has called you to be.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Go into the world and declare his goodness.
Speak to your friends and to your family, to strangers— God has called you into the marvelous light.
We are God’s chosen people
We are God’s chosen people
This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
Psalm 11:23
God’s doing is marvelous and it should be marvelous.
God has called everyone to run away from the darkness and be in His glory.
Not everyone is going to see it that way— but that doesn’t mean that we stop proclaiming the excellences of God— and what he has done and what he has given us through his son Jesus.
We were given a free gift that we did not deserve.
Yet God gave it to us.
As God’s people we have received unmerited mercy
As God’s people we have received unmerited mercy
Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
If you are not a jew you would not have deserved God giving you a gift- The gift of the messiah Jesus.
At least that is what the Jewish leaders believed.
This is why we share our faith, because we do not deserve the mercy of God.
This is not the first time God’s people have been told you don’t deserve this.
and I will sow her for myself in the land.
And I will have mercy on No Mercy,
and I will say to Not My People, ‘You are my people’;
and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’ ”
Hosea
God still said even though you dont deserve it I am going toshow you mercy, even though you may act like and say you are not my people, you are my people.
BUT I AM SO THANKFUL GOD HAS SHOWN ME HIS MERCY.
I am thankful that I am His— That I am God’s people.
God could have chose not to give mercy or even you as his people.
In our JR ministry we recently talked about the when Jesus will come back and build his kingdom.
That everyday he chooses not to come back is another day we have to fight for another soul to become a child of God.
Let this sink in.
If you are a believer, there was a day, an hour before you were saved.
What if God would have came back a day before you were saved, or any hour because you realized that you were a sinner and Christ died for you?
Everyday that Jesus does not return is another day for us to win souls for the kingdom.
DO NOT WASTE IT
You may not know what your future is, or even who you truly are and guess what that is okay:
Here is why— Because if you are believer in Christ you have been bought and paid for.
The beginning of 1 Peter sums it up nicely.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
You were dead but you have been made alive.
You have one last card— and I have one last mirror— On that card you are going to write who does God say you are.
Alter Call:
Maybe its been sometime since you have talked to God- do it now.
Maybe you need to cry out to God
Maybe you have not been called into his marvelous light yet, what are you waiting for?
Today right now, God has chosen to not come back to this earth yet— maybe, just maybe it is because he wants someone here tonight to move out of darkness and run into that marvelous light.
If you need someone to talk to grab your breakout leader, grab me, we would be happy to tell you how you can move out of the darkness and into light.
