Give Thanks To The Lord
The Lord was good to Israel!
He called them as a nation through Abraham.
He made them a promise of a land that would be their own.
He delivered them into the promise land.
When they would rebel against Him, they would find themselves captive to other nations.
He would hear their cries of oppression and deliver them from captivity.
He promised them an everlasting kingdom form the lineage of David.
He constantly sent prophets to them, so that they would turn back to them.
He sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for their sins.
God was very good to the nation of Israel, so David was calling on the nation to give Him thanks
The Lord is holy, righteous, good, loving, patient, just, and everlasting.
His goodness towards us goes beyond what we deserve.
His common grace is for all people.
Common grace are the blessings of God on all people.
He causes the rain to fall and sun to shine.
He provides oxygen to breath and our hearts to beat.
He gives us family and friends.
He gives us food to eat and shelter to live in.
These are all provided by the Lord regardless of if you are a follower of Christ.
God’s common grace is amazing
God’s saving grace is even better than common grace.
God’s saving grace is reserved only for those who receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
We are benefactors of all the promises of God through Jesus Christ.
Predominately the promise of eternal life.
Call upon His Name
By the grace of God, we have the privilege of calling on His name.
We can be assured that when we call on His name He listens to our calling.
We don’t have to make an appointment to talk with Him.
He is available 24/7.
He desires to hear from his children.
He wants us to call upon him in adoration, thanksgiving, and petitions.
God inhabits the praise of His people.
Yet You are holy,
O You who [e]are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
God loves to hear our praises.
He has given us plenty of reasons to sing His praise
He also loves to see our grateful hearts and the expression of our gratitude in our prayers.
He also wants to see our trust in Him through our dependency in prayer
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Make known His deeds among the people
God is at work in all places.
We witness his goodness in many doing in the peoples lives.
We see the evidence of His hand.
We are to testify to what you see the Lord doing in the lives of people.
I have seen God’s healing power in Ron and my sister in law Rebecca.
I have seen the hand of God’s provision in Dwayne Remberts life as he engages in breaking down racial barriers in Montgomery.
I have seen God’s hand of Guidance on Dr. Robert Mullins as he is building a pastor’s network through passion tree ministries.
The hand of God is at work all around us.
We are to take note of it and share it with others
Sing praises to the Lord.
When you have a grateful heart you will sing praises to the Lord.
For He is the the source of all blessings.
17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or [a]shifting shadow.
When you are thankful for the blessings of God you will want to sing His praises.
This is why music is so important in worship.
Think of some of the songs we sing:
Sweet Hour of Prayer
Amazing Grace
It is Well with My Soul
Victory In Jesus
How Great Thou Art
Blessed Assurance
Jesus Paid It All
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
What A Friend We Have In Jesus
All these songs are written with deep meaning.
When we experience the meanings of the songs they take on a different form of worship.
Glory In His Holy Name
To glory in the Name of God is to shine the light on God.
We are to boast in Him.
30 But [d]by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, [e]and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
We are who we are because of what Christ has done for us.
He has redeemed us to the Father in salvation.
He is sanctifying us so that we will become conformed into the image of Christ.
He will glorify us when we enter eternal life.
God has done it all.
We need to boast about what He has done!
Seek the Lord
Every follower of Christ is seeking the Lord.
We have an innate desire within us to be pleasing in His sight.
The only way to do this is by following Jesus through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
When we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we experience the manifestation of God in our lives.
God shows himself to us as we are obedient to the moving of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
He does this by doing the impossible.
Seek the strength of the Lord.
We tend to seek the strength of the Lord when we come to the end of ourselves.
This is actually a good place to be.
When you come to the end of your rope and you have no resolve or solution.
This is when God manifests himself to you in a way that will blow you away.
When J. Wilbur Chapman was in London, he had an opportunity to meet General Booth, who at that time was past eighty years of age.
Dr. Chapman listened reverently as the old general spoke of the trials and the conflicts and the victories.
Then the American evangelist asked the general if he would disclose his secret for success.
“He hesitated a second,” Dr. Chapman said, “and I saw the tears come into his eyes and steal down his cheeks, and then he said, ‘I will tell you the secret.
God has had all there was of me.
There have been men with greater brains than I, men with greater opportunities; but from the day I got the poor of London on my heart, and a vision of what Jesus Christ could do with the poor of London, I made up my mind that God would have all of William Booth there was.
And if there is anything of power in the Salvation Army today, it is because God has all the adoration of my heart, all the power of my will, and all the influence of my life.’”
Dr. Chapman said he went away from that meeting with General Booth knowing that, “the greatness of a man’s power is the measure of surrender.”
The greatest strength we have is that of ourselves that we have given to the Lord!
