Mark 15:42–47 CSB
42 When it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. 44 Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died. 45 When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. 46 After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.

I. Joseph of Arimathea showed faith-filled courage in asking for the body of Jesus.

Mark 15:43 CSB
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body.

A. Joseph of Arimathea had to stand against His own people for the coming Messiah.

Mark 15:43 CSB
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body.
Illus: Take the scene in for a moment. It had been a hectic few days. From the moment of triumphal entry where the crowd cheered for the Messiah to the same crowd screaming for his crucifixion.
When you are talking about the residents of Jerusalem, you don’t need to think of it like living in a big city today.
Jerusalem was build tightly one walkway on top of another. It was a mass of people constantly rubbing shoulders and doing business.
When the events of good friday began to roll, the entire city felt the tremors of the event.
It would be the equivalent of the riots and protests that dot cross our tv screens.
Jesus’ arrest, trial, and death would have been city shaking.
Which is why Joseph’s actions, even in secret, were so courageous. He was doing right, knowing there could consequences from his very friends.
Let’s be honest, it is not that scary to take a stand when you are dealing with strangers. Sure going out of town to share the gospel takes you out of your comfort but at the end of things, it will affect you little at home.
Living for Jesus at home, sharing the gospel with people you know… that takes boldness. Why, because your stand for God will affect the relationships around you.
John 19:38–40 CSB
38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away. 39 Nicodemus (who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. 40 They took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.
Jn 19:

B. Joseph of Arimathea chose to stand for a man convicted of treason.

Mark 15:43 CSB
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body.
Illus: For people sentenced to death by crucifixion, roman law dictated that they be left on their respected crosses to rot.
The reason, Rome used the cross not just for torture, but also to set an example to the populous of what would happen if you rocked the boat.
The goal was that those coming ad going from the city would be able to smell the deterioration of your flesh, watch the scavenging dogs and vultures gnaw at the body.
Rome did not want any honor being given to the body since you were a criminal.
In rare cases, the governor would be given freedom to grant that a family could take down the body. There were conditions though. No service would be given to the deceassed. The ideal of rome was that no body would be used to catalyze a disgruntled people.
In honesty, Joseph should not have been given the body of Jesus. He was a follower, not a family member. Pilate’s actions went directly against Rome’s ideals.
BTW, the jews did out of law taking ask the romans to remove the bodie
Joseph came before following the example of David, to make sure that Jesus’ body would be rightly dealt with.
2 Samuel 21:10–14 CSB
10 Rizpah, Aiah’s daughter, took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on the rock from the beginning of the harvest until the rain poured down from heaven on the bodies. She kept the birds of the sky from them by day and the wild animals by night. 11 When it was reported to David what Saul’s concubine Rizpah daughter of Aiah had done, 12 he went and got the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh-gilead. They had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies the day the Philistines killed Saul at Gilboa. 13 David had the bones brought from there. They gathered up the bones of Saul’s family who had been hanged 14 and buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan at Zela in the land of Benjamin in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish. They did everything the king commanded. After this, God was receptive to prayer for the land.
Deuteronomy 21:22–23 CSB
22 “If anyone is found guilty of an offense deserving the death penalty and is executed, and you hang his body on a tree, 23 you are not to leave his corpse on the tree overnight but are to bury him that day, for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

A. Jesus willingly died on the cross so that none of his bones would be broken.

mk 15:43-36
Illus: There was a time clock on Jesus’ Crucifixion. So as not to work on the sabbath, and respect the Jews, the Romans needed to be done with their torture by sundown.
Most Crucifixions lasted as long as perpetrator would struggle to live. They longer they lived, the more they suffered. Win win for the Romans.
The Jews had worked out a deal with the Romans, break the legs of the criminals, causing the person to die of suffocation much quicker, and then dispose of the bodies.
The Jews did not want to have the bodies hung on the sabbath as they did not want God’s curse on them for the practice. It did not mean that they burried the bodies, but that the romans took care of the disposal themselves. out of sight, out of mind.
There were several prophecies which specified that Jesus’ bones would not be broken. If Jesus hung on to life, not willingly dying, the Roman guards hands would be forced, and his legs would be broken to expedited His death.
Jesus chose not only to walk to the cross, but die willingly and quickly to be the Messiah which scripture demanded.
John 19:31–37 CSB
31 Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35 He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth. 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the one they pierced.
jn 19:
Exodus 12:46 CSB
46 It is to be eaten in one house. You may not take any of the meat outside the house, and you may not break any of its bones.
Psalm 34:19–20 CSB
19 One who is righteous has many adversities, but the Lord rescues him from them all. 20 He protects all his bones; not one of them is broken.
Zechariah 12:10 CSB
10 “Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at me whom they pierced. They will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for him as one weeps for a firstborn.

B. Jesus was given the rights of the covenant people in his death.

Mark 15:43–46 CSB
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body.
Illus: Jesus death finished a life of complete righteousness. He fulfilled every part of the law. He was tempted, tried, and was completely innocent.
That part of who Jesus was, is passed on to every person who trusts Jesus by faith.
There were parts of Jesus’ law keeping which Jesus was passive to. When Jesus was a baby, it was necessary for him to be circomsized rightly by his parents. By the providence of God, Jesus was.
It was necessary for Jesus to be betrayed by one of his followers. By the providence of of God he was by Judas.
It was necessary for Jesus to be have his clothes gambled over. By the providence of God, they were.
As Jesus was born into a Jewish family, fulfilled all responsibilities from his birth forward, it was important that he complete his earthly work as a part of the Jewish people.
If Joseph had not intervened, the Romans would have disposed of the body, and Jesus would have been set aside outside the camp of Israel.
That said, Joseph made sure that Jesus was given the rightful cleaning, wrapping, and burial, a child of Isreal deserved.
By the providence of God, Joseph rightly buried Jesus.

III. It was necessary for Jesus to be buried so that he might rise.

Mark 15:46 CSB
46 After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.

A. God’s great purpose came from Christ’s death.

Illus: We’ve talked about Joseph, Pilot, Roman practice but there is a specific reason Jesus could not have been left on the cross to rot, been disposed of by the Romans, been picked apart by vultures, or even had his legs broken...
God’s plan from the beginning was resurrection. Jesus needed to be buried so that he might be guarded, so that the stone would be rolled away, so that he might walk out alive.
But resurrection is more than just what happened to Jesus, it God’s blueprint for us.
John 12:23–25 CSB
23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit. 25 The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
