Romans 9.19-29

Vs 19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”

Paul’s answer has four parts

1) As creator God does not answer to the creature.

Can something finite or limited and sinful really argue with an infinite holy God’s self-revelation. Do we really know enough to elevate our values and our standards and our insights to the point of judging God as unrighteous. Paul’s point is that they are not arguing with a philosophy he developed for the sake of argument – but with God’s statements about himself that we see in verses 13, 15, 17.

As creator God does not answer to the creature. Secondly…

2) Like a potter God has the right to shape as He wills. (20b-21)

3) God does this in order to reveal his power and glory. (22-23)

v23 “prepared beforehand for mercy” refers all the way back to v11 which means they were shown mercy before they had done anything either good or bad.

4) God has extended His mercy to outcasts just as he has to Israel. (24-29)
