LAST WEEK
We looked at what Sexual Sin can do to a church that is not founded firmly on the truth.
We saw how pride can effect the church in a way that it doesn’t mourn the poor decisions that they make.
After Service, I was talking with Randy about it, and I came to a thought that I didn’t share with yall during service.
The reason why Paul told them to not associate themselves with one who was in active sexual sin was because of their pride.
We must realize that when we don’t mourn the sins of others, it is easy for us to become just like them
When we don’t grieve the sexual immorality of others, we become passive and begin to allow it in our own lives.
THIS WEEK
We are going to look at the relationship between Christians
What happens when we don’t agree with one another?
What happens when other Christians wrong us?
Church, I want us to think about something real quick.
WHAT DOES THE WORLD THINK ABOUT US WHEN THEY SEE US TEAR EACH OTHER APART?
TURN TO
PRAY
1 COR 6:1-
We must remember, in Chapters 1-4, Paul exposed the division within the Church
And gave us the answer for this problem.
In chapters 5-7 he will focus on Intimate yet Sinful Behaviors within the Church
THIS CHURCH WAS STILL IN ITS INFANCY STAGE
IT WAS STILL BEING NOURISHED BY THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE GOSPEL
AS PAUL IS TRYING TO DEFINE WHAT CHURCH IS
We see Paul challenging the Corinthian Church in how they are handling civil disputes
ONE THING HE DESIRED WAS THAT CHURCH WOULD BE A:
Center of reconciliation
Remember the Church was supposed to be a center of reconciliation
Center of forgiveness
The Church is supposed to be a center of forgiveness
A Venue where the Broken relationship between Man and God is mended.
IF The Church has everything pertaining to life and Godliness, then it should be well equipped to handle all that life throws at someone.
The Church is everything pertaining to life and Godliness
IF THE CHURCH is a place that represents who God is, there must be something intrinsically different about the Church
VERSE 1
We see Paul challenging the Corinthian Church in how they are handling civil disputes
How dare you?
Being a believer in Christ
Being a believer in Christ, having been equipped with the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Having been equipped with the Gospel of Jesus Christ
How dare you go to an inferior source to judge your civil matters.
Paul is exposing the immaturity that plagued the Corinthian Church
They didn’t stand for righteousness in their practice
They allowed sinful practices to flourish
They prided themselves in their leaders and the brands they followed
They had all of the symptoms of an untransformed group of people
So much so, that they couldn’t settle civil matters within the church
Paul was upset that the discipleship process wasn’t producing what it normally produced.
From the text one can come to a conclusion that the leadership was lacking
But not just leadership, the greatest lack in the Corinthian Church was the teaching of God’s word.
Friends, there is no reason why the Corinthians were struggling with this.
1 Cor 6:3-
I believe it was a lack of Biblical Literacy
They were Christians who knew not the history of their God
They didn’t know or find value in the Old Testament Scriptures, which specifically went over how to handle such matters
They didn’t know that one day believers would judge the world alongside Jesus.
Church, the reason why Paul encourages the Christian to handle these matters in house is for a few reasons
That the Christian would be taught how to correctly handle the Word of God.
They are observing our behaviors, actions, and how we treat each other
That the Believer in Christ would lean on the truest source of righteousness that is available to them at all times
That the Church would be seen as a place where things are handled decent and in order.
That the church would rely on its leaders to settle matters with a Biblical Perspective.
That the Judicial System of the day would be jealous of how the Church handles things.
The reason why this church had so many issues is rooted in what Paul exposes in verse 5.
Leadership was lacking
Authority was lacking
The truths of the Gospel and the Law were absent in this Church Culture.
It brought chaos and disorder
It brought instability
Sad part was:
The World noticed it.
It was Us Vs Us and the World was invited to see the drama unfold.
We cheat each other
We rip each other off
We mistreat one another
We fail to forgive
We fail to reconcile
All at the entertainment of the world.
What can the Christian do to alleviate this issue?
1 Cor 6:7
PAUL BRINGS IT TO LIGHT
WHY DON’T YOU REPENT?
WHY DON’T YOU ACCEPT THAT YOU ARE WRONG?
IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU TO BE CHEATED AND JUST TAKE IT FOR THE TEAM THAN TO GO THROUGH WITH THIS JUDICIAL PROCESS.
ONE WOULD SAY:
BUT, IT’S THEIR FAULT!
BUT THEY WRONGED ME!
BUT I WANT JUSTICE
FRIENDS, WHEN WE CAN’T WORK WITH EACH OTHER TO BRING RECONCILIATION AND RENEWAL TO OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN OUR WALLS, HOW WILL WE BE ABLE TO DO IT OUTSIDE OF OUR WALLS?
SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
IT’S NOT THAT THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN, IT IS THAT WE ARE BROKEN.
IS IT THE PEOPLE?
OUR FLESH HAS AN APETITE, AND WE WASTE NO TIME FEEDING IT.
WE ARE THE ONE’S WHO ARE UNJUST
WE ARE THE ONE’S WHO WRONG ONE ANOTHER
WE ARE THE ONE’S WHO TEAR EACH OTHER APART.
UNTIL WE REALIZE OUR BROKENESS, THIS PROBLEM WILL PERSIST.
SAD PART IS, WE COSIGN THE EVIDENCE THAT WE ARE UNCHANGED BY THE GOSPEL
But I accepted Jesus
I was baptized by so and so
Don’t judge me,
Friends the Gospel is the most transformative power on this planet
