Introduction
The Prophet Jonah
The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai
The name of Jonah in bibical hebrew means “dove”
The name of Amittai the father of Jonah means “my truth or my faithfulness”
The son of faithfulness
what kind of book are we reading?
the first clue is "the word of the LORD".
the word of the LORD comes to what kind of people? Ecspecially in Israel? Prophets
jonah is a representative of the covenant people of God, through whom God wants to do His work. in the world. Ever chapter exposes just how bankrupt Jonah is. He is held up for redicule, shame, and criquite.
In the bible prophets are not fortune tellers, they sometimes look into the future and discern what God will be doing in line with his character.
this story is aimed at exposing the worst tendencies that tend to form inside God's convenant people. Which is pride, hard heartness, judgmentalism, tribalism, small mindedness, the inability to grow and change and let God's grace actually suprise me. and explode the boundaries of what i thought was possible in the world
They are messangers who are called to speak on God's behalf.
Micah, Isaiah, Ezekial, Obedahiam, & Zackariah they all begin with the word The words of this prophet, the word of the lord came to, the vision that came from God.
Sometimes God's word is given to His people through the prophet through his words. In the book of Jonah is God's word is given to his people through a story of abou a prophet so if you want to hear God's word you are going to have to read and reread and mediate and think about the message of the story. not about the fish.
a pastor whom i really look up to views the book of jonah as a story the reads as two forms of literature that we have in our culture. Saturday Night Live and comic books. the story telling style of this books he says is like satire.
Satires are always aimed not simply at telling you of some event that took place but they are aimed at criqituing you the reader. But getting you to laugh while they are making fun of you. They are making fun of American culture which is you, but you are laughing while they do it. And holding up characters for ridecule
So we can say this is another collections of prophecies
The book is full of comic book style where everything is over the top.
The word huge "ga-dol" in hebrew is listed fifteen times.
to make the fish the main theme or the main focus is to miss the what this story is really about. The Book of Jonah is apart of the sacred scriptures and the purpose of the scriptures is to reveal the character of God and to reveal Jesus to us and His character and His purposes and what He is up to in this world. So whatever the book of Jonah is about, we know that it is doing just that.

Only prophet in the bible that ran away from God
the book of Jonah begins is with a really profound exploration of the nature and psychology of disobediance.

Jonah know that YHWY would be merciful to the Ninevites through there repentance and that was not what Jonah had in mind. He had a vision in his life being a prophet and leading an enemy of Israel to repentance was not apart of this vision. He might have thought others would look lowely upon high for helping forgiveness and life reach the brutal Ninevites, so he does not want this to work out. So, he knows that YHWY loves to show mercy, he knows somehow that Ninevites are going to find mercy and this does not go along with his vision. So he books it to Tarshish

Obey-Obedience
the son of faithfulness
in this culture obedience does not have a favorable association with what we direct it to. So it not a positive idea. So we read that the word of the LORD came to... and we instantly think ohh here is God commanding people again.
