Unseen Training

Last week, toward the last half of the lesson, we looked at Exodus 20.
Who remembers what was the theme of Exodus 20?
Exodus 20:1–2 KJV 1900
And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Exodus 20:3 KJV 1900
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:4–5 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exodus 20:7 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Exodus 20:8 KJV 1900
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exodus 20:12 KJV 1900
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Exodus 20:17 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
This week we are going to begin by look at a different chapter and book of the Bible.
Deuteronomy 5:6 KJV 1900
I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Deuteronomy 5:7 KJV 1900
Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
Deuteronomy 5:8 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
Deuteronomy 5:11 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Deuteronomy 5:12 KJV 1900
Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.
Deuteronomy 5:16 KJV 1900

Deuteronomy 5:17 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not kill.
Deuteronomy 5:18 KJV 1900
Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
Deuteronomy 5:19 KJV 1900
Neither shalt thou steal.
Deuteronomy 5:20 KJV 1900
Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Deuteronomy 5:21 KJV 1900
Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
So, what do we notice? Repetition. Now, are we going to teach the same lesson as last week? No, but we are going to transition from it.
While all of these commandments are matters of the heart, the last one emphasizes that importance of a heart that is right with God. Not only are we to abstain from the various things warned about in the commandments (idolatry, murder, stealing, etc)...
The last commandment tells us that we are not even to desire things in our heart that we should not have.
This is clearly an issue of the heart.
So again, what is our lesson title?

Unseen Training

What are some of the practices in the Christian life that are public and visible?
NAME SOME
As we live the Christian life, are we going to live in a way that pleases God if we only do the public, visible things?
No, because it would be possible to attend youth group on Wed and do things other times that displease our Savior.
Would it be possible to come to church every Sunday but be involved with things at school 5 days a week that are not holy?
One way that we can be energized to do the public matters with the right heart, is to make sure we are doing the private matters with the right heart.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PRIVATE DISCIPLINES IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE?

There should be a theme in everything that was said and it is this: the Christian life should be a consistent life; both in public and in private.
Deuteronomy 6:4–6 KJV 1900
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
What would it look like to follow this verse?
Deuteronomy 6:7 KJV 1900
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Deuteronomy 6:8–9 KJV 1900
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
This is called a phylactery: a small leather box containing Hebrew texts on vellum, worn by Jewish men at morning prayer as a reminder to keep the law.
The other is called a mezuzah: a parchment inscribed with religious texts and attached in a case to the doorpost of a Jewish house as a sign of faith.
This is how some of the Jews interpreted these verses. They beleived they werre actual objects to remind them of their obligations toward God.
But for us, we will focus on verse 7.
Deuteronomy 6:7 KJV 1900
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
In that verse, we see that there is
1. Teaching
2. Listening
3. Family faith
4. Talking about these things.
5. Sitting at home. Informal and in private.
6. Walking by the way. Informal and in public.
7. Going to bed and getting up.

Basically, at all times and in all places.

The apostle Paul gives a similar instruction.
2 Timothy 2:1–2 KJV 1900
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
When Paul was about to die, he told Timothy that he was to pass along what he had seen consistently demonstrated in Paul’s life.
He then gives him 3 examples.
2 Timothy 2:3–4 KJV 1900
Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
2 Timothy 2:5 KJV 1900
And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
ATHLEO
2 Timothy 2:6 KJV 1900
The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.
2 Timothy 2:7 KJV 1900
Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
When does a soldier in battle stop being a soldier?
What does an athlete stop being an athlete?
When does a farmer get a break from their farm?
When does a Christian take a break from being a Christian?
The graves at First Creek on Abbeville Highway.
So Gethsemane Teenager, I am not asking what your public Christian life looks like.
What does your private life look like? And if you are a Christian, you never stop being a Christian, so you don’t have a private Christian life and a private life that is separate from your Christianity.
There are a lot of areas we could take this, but I want to leave you with two.
The Word and Prayer.
The word is how God talks to us. Prayer is who we talk to him. What do those two things look like in your life?
Word: Read small portions on a consistent basis. This is better than large chunks at random times.
Prayer: God has given us a model to follow in the Lord’s prayer.
Who is 2 Timothy to?
Acts 16:1–2 KJV 1900
Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
