All right. Good morning church. When did Iva a little bit of an upper respiratory thing and you're nice seeing you last week? I struggled a bit today. I was a lot better but that last song. I don't know if it'll ever be well enough to sing that song without getting winded. Holy smokes that's up there. So anyway, it's a week 1 of Advent. If you've been following along we just finished Hebrews and pray that everything going largely through books in sequence. This is a little bit of a break for Mike and myself my time here today is not feeling well. So hopefully we will pray he gets to feeling better courses a terrible time of year to get sick. There's a lot going on. So, I'm sure he's like a perfect fits what we needed that said it was good good good timing and summer cars cuz I was already scheduled a freeze for today. So I'll be talking to these first two weeks about the first two parts of Advent. He'll be finishing that episode beat up the Christmas interesting enough. This won't be your typical. We take a book and go through it. It just so happens though that after today the rest of the messages are very sequential in the Book of Luke. So we'll be fine. If you're nicely if you're not familiar with Advent. We're going to talk a little bit today about what that word means and why we're even bothering with it as a whole. Places are much more familiar term Advent the bigger deal in some circles. I think it's it's a really interesting notion. And I think there's a lot that we can glean from it. So today will actually be in Isaiah to which may seem a little counterintuitive about Christmas. But if you follow with I think you'll see why the song choices today were spot-on because we talked about Advent especially the first part where they speak about anticipation this notion that we're excited for Christmas, you know, it is great that we're celebrating this but there's a bigger part right? This is already occurred, but we should still be anticipating Christ what he's going to do in our lives and of course eventuality of becoming a redeem. So Isaiah to I think that's an excellent job. That's what you got your Bible to turn with great. If not, I'll be up on the screen. You can read along with me. Jimmy first I can read it. But where did Isaiah the son of a masala concerning Judah and Jerusalem it shall come to pass in the latter days at the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains and shall be lifted up above the hills and all the nations shall flow to it many people shall come and say come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord to the house of the god of Jacob ways that we may walk in his past proud of Zion shall go forth the law in the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the Nations and she'll decide disputes for many peoples and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their Spears into pruning hooks Nation shall not lift up sword against Nation. Neither. Shall they learn War any more o House of Jacob, Let us walk in the light of the Lord. Are you have rejected your people the house of Jacob because they're full of things in the East End of fortune tellers like a Philistines and they strike hands with the children of foreigners. The land is filled with silver and gold in there is no And other treasures and is filled with horses and there is no into their chariots and is filled with Idols the Dow down to the work of their hands to what their own fingers have made some an is humbled and each one has brought do not forgive them enter into the Rock and hide in the dust before the terror of the Lord from the Splendor of his majesty. The hottie looks of man shall be brought low in the lofty pride of man. Shall be humbled in the Lord alone will be exalted in that day or the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty against all it is lifted up and it shall be brought low against all the Cedars of Lebanon Loft and lift it up and it gets all the old fashioned against all the lofty mountains against all the uplifting Hills and it's every Hightower against every four to five wall against all the ships of tarshish and gets all the beautiful crafts and the hardness of man shall be humbled in the lofty pride of men shall be brought low in the Lord alone will be exalted in that day and the idle shutterly pass away and people should I enter the case of the rocks in the holes of the ground from before the terror? Lord Infamous planner his majesty when he rises to terrify the Earth and that day mankind will Cast Away their Idols of silver in their Idols of gold which they made for themselves to worship to the moles into the bat the end of the caverns of the rocks in the end the collapse of the cliffs or before the terror of the Lord in from the Splendor of his majesty when you Rises to terrify the Earth stopped regarding man in whose nostrils is breath for a of what account is he afraid? Heavenly father to begin this Advent season. I'm sure a lot of people here excited about Christmas coming up and vacations and families and all kinds of wonderful things that happen at this time of your load. But we also know there's a lot of painful memories or wounds it that we thought were closed in around Christmas time. They open again of loss or grief Lord and we want to take all of that the joys in the sadness of the season of our world. We left it up to you right now Lord, and we asked it for this moment here or they'll be able to focus on your word and what it would say to us about who you are and how we can best glorify you in this time of year. I went when the world is a perhaps much more receptive than normal to the understanding of your son and what he did thank you for this time together Lord. I pray that you will take all of my words away in the fees will be at word spoken of you and about your word and be accurate and a helpful for us to understand you or your work better.

Alright, so tired of this sermon be patient. It's already done which baby sounds a little nutty but that's alright. If you follow up with I think it'll all make sense. So let's start at the beginning which what is ever put your hand. Has anyone heard the term before but just a quick walk down to level set because there's some churches that treat Advent is something different than this believe it or not. So here's what we're talking about meaning the coming or they rifle the Advent of anything for many Christians celebrate the first Advent we talk about here the first Advent the first coming or arrival of Christ the first one, right? But why don't we always celebrate Jesus? Yes, we do. And this is one of those kind of conundrums in the church is like all the time where we celebrate Christ we do that every day. We set this uniquely aside to focus on his Advent. So it's not just like another that's the sounds maybe kind of like fun. But when you talk about the aspects of Jesus and what he did in his Earthly Ministry, this is a time of year. We think about how he came why he came the way he did in all of the various facets of his birth. And what that means there's some great symbolism in there. There's some wonderful things that come to pass with a prophecy. That's what we're here to talk about. So what we talked about I haven't what does it typically look like traditionally. This is tradition. You're not going to see in the Bible when Advent begins. This is how we do it air conditioning to forced send it for Christmas would be the start of Advent if we talked about a 4-week minutes, standard fare thing the for Sunday's kind of focus on these four things the promise of a savior lot of had not sent you a picture but promise kept the birth of Jesus true. We all are aware that the telling of his coming the shepherds in the Angels share ride or numbers that if Little Else line, is it a pretty good job in reading that part out in the promise for all people journey of the Magi know some of these might be like when I'm not sure that's interesting stay tuned. We have some conversation small group about like mixtiles what this out of the other. I wish I could tell you all of your concerns probably not but we're certainly going to talk about these aspects more in depth Not because this is just a fun thing to do in Bible trivia time, but because there are aspects of Jesus is coming that have eternal ramifications and residents. So today we can by studying its and learning about this understand more about our God and his son and his plan for our Salvation is not very Christmassy in some regards maybe not but that's only because it may or may not think about maybe the the full impact of Christmas. So where do we start? When is every Christmas Story start because of thinking about your head actually went through this exercise in? My name is making these nuts horse stable. Maybe the angel pairing to marry before she's been like where do we go back sand in spoiler alert. Those are all good places to start talking about Advent. So when we discussed this and we talked about the Advent in the first coming of Jesus, there isn't like well don't start there because remember he said you have to go know you can speak into discussion of of this at any point, but for today, I want to go back a bit further the Genesis. 315 I will put enmity between you and the woman in between your Offspring and her Offspring. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. Paradise maybe. That's the way that's way back there. Achieve right? He said that the the the fruit has been eaten and God's upset and he says Fine y'all send this the first sin the original here we go. Watch what happens now? It's not going to be good. But if you look at this scripture the need for a savior is evident at this moment and the Advent of the savior is foretold by God In This Moment from this point forward the world is awaiting a savior if we go back and look at this more closely. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel that's for telling Right here. We see God saying there will be in between between you and the woman stalking the serpent between your Offspring and hers right? There's going to be trouble. However, he's going to bruise your head. You'll only bruises heal. All the way back there when senators are will we see this notion of there will be a shall something is going to come to pass and he will be bruised ahead will be crushed. Interesting that awaiting I say becomes anticipating as prophecy continuous as you study through the Old Testament anywhere you look pretty much all of this is foretelling Jesus the passage we read from Isaiah talks about the the end of all this right when we see the mountain of the Lord lifted high right prophecy of a savior, right and throughout a day of course is a wonderful book of Prophecy. But all of these Old Testament prophets all of them for telling anticipating adding detail adding detail to that story all the way back to the beginning and the reason that this is important for us and we talked about the ad that we talked about the anticipation of this is there was a long long time where the Jews were eagerly awaiting salvation. They may not have known it. They don't know what they were looking for. The newest Farm was going to take many of them had had two but they were awaiting salvation and it became anticipation as foretold. But Jesus first coming is already finished, right? I mean he already did as we mentioned it during the second. He has come to Earth. He lived a life perfect and sinless he died. He rose again. The Advent is complete. It is finished. I say one down one to go ion stripe, but I think it's accurate when we talk about what price did it it has to be coupled with what price is going to do this first coming saved all of mankind from our sin now it didn't take care of us, and we still have sinned. I'm Rife with it ashamed of it. But it's true, right? It's still here. We're still suffering in a world. That's that's corrupted by sent but but the Christ already came he died and and pay for all that sent to the story's not over when we celebrate his coming. We want to be very careful that we know that there's another whole part of that story, right? The reason I like the passage from Isaiah is it starts talking about the end the heaven right when everything is good in the world on the Mount of the Lord is peace. All swords are being into plowshares. There's no need for any more. It's all over but then after that we talked a lot about sort of the state of the world as we know it today right now. He's talking about them, right you guys are all caught up with idolatrine all these number of myriad things that are ruining your lies and you don't get it. But that that that prophecy holds true. We have the same notion today. Our Christ is still coming back. He is still going to come back he's going to rain on high the mountain of the Lord will not put the plans on before. However in the meantime, what are we going to do about it? So I say be patient is already done.

Jesus has finished the payment for our sins is first Advent is complete. We're celebrating that payment When We Gather in this place we talked about as it we talked about Christmas and how fun it is and all these these warm memories are or may be painful memories or what-have-you. All of these are engineered all the feelings that we have any emotions. We have her based off of our experience with this. Emotions are very closely couple to what price did and remembering this event and I would argue more of that should be right when we talked about his Advent what he did the way that he was born in the life. He lived in the death. He endure on the cross freed us from sin Hallelujah, right? He has saved us and we just saying that right, but it's true. We are saved but we're still plagued by sin. Can we talk about the good news and people like you I mean I come to church and I have this warm emotional reaction at Christmas and and maybe people have seen that come back and I want to talk a little bit and and this was really great. This is really great. But I'm still sick. I still have people that are close to me that are dying. My bills still aren't getting that. You know, I don't feel saved. I don't feel good. I'm still suffering in sand if I was saved from sin and he freed me from sin. Why do I feel this way? An answer is be patient. It is done right? We're plagued by sin, but it's been defeated. We're free from it. We're no longer slaves to our sin. But it is still here and we talked about the Advent of Christ. We talked about a weeding Chrysler me four people that maybe you're feeling pretty good with their life right now. They love coming that will the Christmas time and if there's any tivities abilities a baby and it's so wonderful and sing the old songs and sing all the stuff quick confession. I love Christmas time big fan. I like Christmas music. I like the whole kitten Kaboodle putting the lights up we have these big Inflatables in our yard, it's crazy. I eat it up. I really enjoy Christmas. Some people. Do not Mike's a good example. I think he did a DJ for a while how to play a lot of Christmas music. So he doesn't care for I think it's insane understand how things can be. It's just great music know it was there once a year. So as soon as now this year we held off till Thanksgiving I did. I think you were in a day early. I think on Thanksgiving you are listening to Christmas music. That's fine. I don't bemoan if you want to start July. That's okay. But why do we do that? Why do we even bother with that feeling you ever thought about that actually talked about this little bit in our small group today this this notion that the devil's at work, but what we want to clean into the into the word we want to draw the word of the Lord into a store and I think about going to do well on what's going on because it gives us hope right there's hope knowing Christ did do this every year. We remember when I feel like maybe the sins not gone from my life. Maybe I'm not paid for Christmas rolls around the Advent no, let's go back. Let's read it again came as a baby. He met all the requirements for filled all the prophecies. This is truly the Son of God. He went to the cross and he died for me. I remember that. I am safe. I'm sealed. I don't care what the devil sound like whenever he says I can't can't be taken away from you this year. January February March get to the long tooth. We celebrate his death is resurrection. Yes. He said there's a reason we do this and it's not because the baby Jesus was so cute. Cuz I don't know. I didn't see it. I haven't read any first-hand like there. He was adorable. You would really look at what I do know is he started that way because that was God's plan. He came in the world are very humble way lived a humble life a servant's life all the way to death on a cross paid for my sins fraternity Hallelujah. You have saved me. So this isn't just remembering the warm feelings of old but those go hand-in-hand and it's not surprising when we dwell on things are good. We should be we should be very pleased we should expect that. I guess that's God is good. He is good to me better than I deserve. That's Grace.

So why don't we just focus on his second coming, right? That's why I started in Isaiah. Let's just talk about that the day it all comes back when I tell you there's plenty of denominations are religions that just want to talk about this. So much so that if you think about cults and things they they they're trying to pull this forward right? Let's just end it now maybe we've I figured out a shortcut to Heaven it's a spaceship will wear tennis shoes and drink Kool-Aid or whatever just happened and you think how could people be so crazy to go along with that? It's because people are sick and tired of being sick and tired. If you can convince me that this gets me out of here sooner, but I don't have to watch people ruin their lives watch me ruin my life enmity and strife and people that I love learn to hate me and vice versa in the frustration. I just want to go be with God I can get you there today. Oh, really? I'm all ears right now. We've got work to do and then we get frustrated in this place. We are thinking I don't want to be here anymore. I can't deal with it anymore lo and behold at least once a year here in Advent. We are reminded that Christ came and did the necessary. He's not still a baby. He's not a teenager learning how to build furniture with his Dad. He grew up. He saved mankind all of those Rosa. God gave him have been paid for it's over. It's finished. I'm seal send still here, but I'm not a slave to it price to tear that. I'm in his book now. My name is down. Yeah, but we're going to stink a little bit and up. The problem here is that if we focus on the second coming and we forget that we are good to go right now. God has sent his son pay for our sins. We are paid for today. We have power in Christ name today. We're in the same rest of the juice. They had some preconceived notions of what Christ final coming was going to be which I prophesied the part probably read in Isaiah is not his first coming. I mean, there's some Shadows of it right not to get too too far afield here with regard to Hebrew that we just went through right, but he did come as a king the first time around but as a servant King a job to do I want the juice solid. What are no no? No. No. No, we want a mighty ruler. We want to savor that's going to fix this. Look at these people that are expanding against us opposed to our God and answer course is spoiled, but you're opposed to your God you don't do anything. He commanded of you you're wandering around the Wilderness because you don't get it. You don't need a king. You don't need a warrior. You need a savior. We want to Warrior rpr price comes as a warrior. I missed it. It's serious and so for us we're not up against that today, right? We're not talking to Jews. I'm trying to convert to Christianity. We are probably most folks here confessing Christians. So for us we celebrate his first Advent because he defeated sin then that's why we do it. It's not because it's a wonderful thing this down today. Should we even bother celebrating the birth of Christ necessarily are we called to do it? We have some specific commands in the Bible to remember his death. That's fine. But his birth. We don't celebrate it because his birth was in and of itself commanded for worship or the manner which but if fulfill prophecy we do this because they course I've got to talk about it, but the benefit of this the graciousness of all this is we know that our savior lives forever unlike any other birth that's occurred in history. Kreisberg had a specific purpose for all of us here today. We celebrate this season. It's it's a season of Hope and it's a season of reconciliation in many regards because it's a season of Jesus remembering the things that he did being born was extraordinary. It was miraculous dying on the cross and conquering sin is divine. It's just that I was going to be like in his birth was divine to yes, of course, it wasn't fun got to hand in all this right with the focus in the swing on his birth and his life ended to to idolize that process is dangerous in that what we end up doing is trying to put into this process that which we hold most important. When price came out as a conquering King, but as a humble servant that should have sent a message to us. Okay, if it's a message to the Jews, they want to hear this is a weak King has defeated easily by the government of Rome, right? He's been enslaved. I mean, are you kidding rise up conquer music that's coming. I'm not going to conquer the Kings yet. I told you the prophecy is very clear. We just ran Isaiah Christ will reign as king of all at the father's right hand of the father. But when he came the first time God knew that what we needed was saved from our sin first if we came and got to write to raining with everybody would be all the ones that are eradicated from because there's nobody there that can be in the presence of God price is raining over nothing but the angels and everything else that were created specifically for God's sake God's plan was different and when we talked about his second coming we talked about heaven and we think on that tremendous we should absolutely should remind ourselves that heaven is coming but this time of year, we want to remind ourselves that our sin has been paid for we do not have to wait for the second coming for our glorification to appreciate the work of Christ. His Advent is burned all the way through to his death heralded a freedom from sin for us now. right now

so are in anticipation of the second Advent should be marked by a beating ants born from the first. You probably think I'm sound like a broken record and that's okay. Right and why is he to talk about the birth of Jesus? Yes next week, right. If you remember the first four were talking about today is anticipating and water. We anticipate anticipating save from our sin. That's what we want. I don't have anybody else here. I'm tired of sim. I'm tired of a fallen world and sickness and death and all the nonsense they in fighting in the misunderstandings all these things at the start of little things in ruin relationships and we have to look back with regret. So why did I say that I should have I should have called and I didn't have time all that one day gone away. I'm really really looking forward to that. However, right that's not today. Satan is still here. There are people still suffering today in this room. If you know who Jesus is, you got a leg up on sin cuz you know, it's not the Lord of your life. Sin stinks. It's going to beat you up guaranteed devil all over you if you're doing the work of Christ, but he can't win. It's over. It's already paid for price at taking care of her since we will reign forever with him. So what do we do? In the meantime? Where is our anticipation line will be a day when no more about that. But not yet, but not yet, but doesn't mean we're stuck here with nothing to do but wait. We're not called to just hold on. Hey, I'm free from Sam's have to go put my feet up just wait for Christ to come back or I'll die either way. That's not a call. But why are anticipating about second Advent are dissipation of the Cummings Heaven the new Earth to be marked by obedience born from the first when Christ calls at the Great Commission in the great commandment. We should be able to talk to drive into that with confidence that we can do it because Christ is acting in us to make this happen all the things that we seek to do as we daily overcome challenges week daily deal with thorns in our flesh and people that annoy some things like that. All of this is meant to focus everything back on Christ what he has already done. So think about that as we move to this Advent season, Yes, he did come as a baby unequivocally born in a manger all that is true. Incredible it's an incredible story. It is a miracle. It was the beginning of something that was incredible. The Advent of Christ started in this lowly manger ended up on a narrow wooden cross and they think it would look at this. What a sad tale of any regard. Why would you ever celebrated a good question if Christ death on the cross or just another death? Why would he bother there's nothing extraordinary about somebody born in poverty? Right Becomes of zealot for a while crucified for their beliefs. It didn't line of the government. Samsung world around us all the time. We don't celebrate every breath like that. We celebrate Christ when somebody says, why do you bother to celebrate Advent? It's because of when we think of Advent we think of Christ taking care of all of our sin Den is eradicated. His first Advent freed us from sin. So that even though we're dealing with sin today. We are not a slave to it. Any longer we are free for we can do incredible things through Christ who gives us strength to go out and preach the word with confidence. How are you not beat up by that because I know it's going to be over one day but not tonight.

But all the action here, we celebrate Advent to remind ourselves that we have something to anticipate.

That's pretty good summary. We talked about the Advent season. This was a time a specific time in the past. Absolutely right why we re living questions come up. When was Christ. When was it really this date and all this and are we really is it a pagan holiday? It's been grabbed by Christians the Sun the other endless debate the historicity of that we'll get into that some of the next few weeks, but do know this regardless of exactly what day Jesus was born. He was indeed any live descendants laughing he died on the cross that occurred. It's over it is finished by his own words. but you didn't dine stay did you resurrected after 3 days? We have a living breathing interceding powerful saver. He's fly right now the right hand of the father. He's a guy he is God, right? He's not a guy with a like Dad cannot lie and everywhere it wants dad not so I didn't have that problem. He did for a while. He has to be in one place at a time when he was here on Earth fully God fully man. Now, he's only Jesus so he can intercede for everybody at once again. Be present for everybody at once. That's what we're up to. But now we're God was there before that sank in passing that we have Christ interceding on our behalf because he has paid for our sins are owned by him. So our existence today is much different than the existence before they were anticipating a giga many of the Jews didn't think that was okay and they're still anticipating the king is going to come they're going to get the king but they're not going to like the way that goes down when they don't acknowledge that his son is his son. I put some on the wrong side of that equation for us today for those that believe in Jesus. We know that we've got an ally on our side that defeats all the other allies. We know how the story ends but we can be we can be working today enjoying that power enjoying that freedom. Now long before we get to heaven I just got lost waiting for a king to destroy their enemies when they really needed a savior Destroyer Cent. I'd say it's the same for us when we think about what's going on our wise.

Probably pretty easy for us to put our finger on things that we find oppressive things. We wish were gone. My life will be so much easier if it weren't for. I just didn't have to deal with that. I'm back in the days of the Jews. This was a lot to do with you know city-states and you know, they're there they could be captured or killed and a win so they felt the need for a king in the Old Testament vs. Constant bleeding that got me to kiss. You got me. That's what got sing to them as you need to trust me put your faith in me. So Jesus comes I like I can but yeah. Now you get a king, but you didn't do what we wanted.

We don't to be that kind of people we will be able to say that Christ came. He lived a perfect life. He died for filling all the prophecy doing exactly what God would real for him and only because he was so perfect. He didn't exactly is God's plan. Do we have freedom? It was perfect. We need that same shaver to destroy our Cinemas. Be patient It's Already Done. Jesus has done everything needed to save you. There was nothing missing. It's not everything price did plus your full understanding of Adventure making sure you get here every Sunday or giving to the poor or any of that. These are all wonderful things, but they don't save us through this so specific in a world of the talking to you were specifically I know you think this guy was important but Jesus was better. Let me think this thing was important but Jesus is more important. You've got to put price in his right place and in around this time of year. It's tempting. Even for Christians. I told you I love Christmas music extended for me to get lost in the emotion of old Nostalgia of the good old days thinking of my grandmother's house and you know the smell of cooking and baking that was unique to that scenario. I'm sure everybody in here can relate to something like that. I ate a warm remembrance of a of a Time long past. Probably isn't even as nice as we remember to be. When we think about Christ verse Advan the same regard. It's nice to see the picture of the major to talk clean because what we wanted Vision Revision nice and warm and snug and cozy probably wasn't probably cold. Probably cry. I don't know. I'm sure it was not pleasant at all is a humble. What he did on that cross the time he spent on this Earth the work he did the perseverance that he had. That should be a really warm me for all of us. And we move into this Advent season. We see these aspects of how he came we talked today about anticipating, you know, they anticipated that first coming and we're anticipating his second coming grateful for the first coming. And then we have other things we can talk about it with for this week about his different aspects. You can be free from the slavery of sin today. I say that unequivocally no ifs ands or buts. If you feel like you're in your chacal or yolk by Sandy can't get rid of this and its commanding your life. And if only there was a way out there's a way of Jesus Christ. Today you can be free from sin completely eventually maybe if they pull that seems so I thought you said I could be free from slavery to that. Well, there's a big difference between being a slave to sin and sinning. I am a sinner. But I am not a slave to sin anymore price freed me from that. He did. So on that cross it was finished. It was paid for the wrath of God was satisfied. Everybody who believes in Jesus Christ. It is 10:00. It is finished. I can't make that any clearer. It is finished. Well, it's over there is no exception to that rule or condition applied. None whatsoever. It is finished. You will be free from sin completely eventually. That's the promise. That's all we anticipate we were like, how do you say so I'll be in the midst of all things for the Comedown how to keep a happy face or to put on airs know we should go to the word and say I can't wait until this is gone Lord Maranatha come Lord Jesus. Yes, come back. I'm I'm tired of this. However, let me persevere because that's what God call me to do and I can do so knowing that Christ has taken care of what is needed for me to succeed in his name for the glory of God.

Please don't leave without Jesus as your lord and savior. If something here today has struck a chord with my gosh. I disagree. I don't think that he's way off base on this, I mean, I'd love to know really I don't know everything guaranteed close but not everything. But if you're if you're today in your thinking, I don't know who Jesus is at all like this is all news to me and I thought I was stuck on the 11th of a dictator. I thought Jesus just lived and died. Stay did know Jesus is Alive. He's overcome death and he's taking care of sin to take this paid for its over since been defeated. It's still around with the defeat is imminent, right? The clock is ticking. We know how that game in. Please don't leave today without Jesus as your lord and savior. I'll be up here. We're going to sing a song here. If you want to come up and pray feel free. If you'd like to come up and pray with me great you like to join the church. If you'd like to give your life to Christ is a great time to do that.
