Is Christ Your King?
Jeremiah 23:1–6 LEB
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the flock of my pasture,” declares Yahweh. Therefore thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people, “You yourselves have scattered my flock, and you have driven them away, and you do not attend to them. Look, I will punish you for the evil of your deeds,” declares Yahweh. “Then I myself will gather together the remnant of my flock from all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their grazing place, and they will be fruitful, and they will become numerous. And I will raise up over them shepherds, and they will shepherd them, and they will no longer fear, and they will not be dismayed, and they will not be missing,” declares Yahweh. “Look, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he will reign as king, and he will achieve success, and he will do justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell in safety, and this is his name by which he will be called: ‘Yahweh is our righteousness.’
Jeremiah 29:11 LEB
For I know the plans that I am planning concerning you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘plans for prosperity and not for harm, to give to you a future and a hope.
Today we begin our journey into Advent and towards recognizing the birth of our Lord and Savior. However, this Sunday is the opening to that journey. This Sunday is known as Christ the King Sunday.
This Sunday is said to represent our understanding of what Christ did for us by humbling Himself becoming human and being willing to die on the Christ for us. We do so by recognizing Him as King of Kings.
What is most important however is that we realize that Christ is not just any King but He is a King that loves us and wants what is best for us.
When I looked up the definition of king (not just any king but a king in relationship to how the bible outlines the king) it stated:
A king was responsible to God for the welfare of the people in his nation. He was the leader of the army in times of war (). He was the final judge or highest court of appeals in judicial matters (; ; ). He was God's representative or steward to the nation (; ; ).
What is also important is that God never had any intentions of His people being ruled by an earthly king. God desire what that He would be king over us. Listen to this passage from 1 Samuel as the people have begged that they might have a king.
10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
If you we look through history we can say that everything that God spoke to the people through Samuel is exactly what came about. So this morning we want to compare The King to a king and you determine who is your king!

Point 2: An earthly king is concerned with self and the King of Kings is concerned about us!
Jeremiah 23:2 LEB
