Communion
Read scriptures from
Communion is a time for us to remember our place as members of the body of Christ, not because of what we did, but because He chose us and gave himself for us. I think we can all recognize though, that there are problems that happen in the Church and in our families and even sometimes between us. As Paul said it in
1 Corinthians 11:18 KJV 1900
18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
We can come together as professing Christians and miss the point of communion. Paul described their gathering this way in
1 Corinthians 11:20 KJV 1900
20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.
1 Corinthians 11:27–33 LEB
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a person examine himself, and in this way let him eat from the bread and let him drink from the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks, if he does not recognize the body, eats and drinks judgment against himself. 30 Because of this, many are weak and sick among you, and quite a few have died. 31 But if we were evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But if we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined, in order that we will not be condemned with the world. 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together in order to eat the Lord’s supper, wait for one another.
They came together for to fulfill their own needs without consideration of those around them or their relationship with the Lord.
We take communion after eating, because that is when we are full and satisfied. Jesus gathered his disciples for communion after their meal because they had finished telling each other about all of the things of the day. They had all unloaded and it is at this time that their minds were nearly quiet.
Paul describes this time of communion in
1 Corinthians 11:27–33 KJV 1900
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. 33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
He says, tarry for one another. The American Standard Version says “wait one for another” and some other versions say “wait for each other”. This reminds me of
James 5:16 LEB
16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.
James 5:16 KJV 1900
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
and he uses Elijah as an example, a man like us, yet he prayed and it didn’t rain for three and a half years.
Lets take a minute and examine ourselves. This isn’t the time for every prayer request, we’ll get to that in a few minutes. But, if there is an offense that you need to deal with, turn to someone and confess it, ask them to pray with you.
wait on the Lord, wait on the people
Now, take the bread and hold it in your hand. This is what Paul said in
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 KJV 1900
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Take the bread and eat all of it.

Take the cup and hold it. He went on to say in
1 Corinthians 11:25 KJV 1900
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Take the cup and drink all of it.
