INTRO:
My experience on the ropes course as a “team building” exercise.
In order for me to get to the other side, I had to literally lean on and trust my “Rope Buddy” Ken.
As we look at the book of Proverbs, we must understand that “Proverbs must be applied in the context of God’s wisdom and not our own.”
This leads me to my one and only point for today:
The wise become wise because they walk with God and have complete trust in Him.
The wise become wise because they walk with God and have complete trust in Him.
*A heart of trust should result in bold obedience*
What we see in this text is 6 commands or directives and 5 benefits or rewards that come from following God.
Prov
Proverbs 3:1–4 CSB
My son, don’t forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commands; for they will bring you many days, a full life, and well-being. Never let loyalty and faithfulness leave you. Tie them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and high regard with God and people.
Walking in wisdom is about the total person, the whole person, holding onto and living out God’s teachings and His commandments.
Deuteronomy 6:5 CSB
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Deut
What does it mean to love God with all of our being? What does it mean to love God with all of us? What does that entail? We see that in verses 5–6
Proverbs 3:5–6 CSB
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5–
What does it mean to trust the Lord with all our heart?
What does it mean to trust the Lord with all our heart?
Do we trust God with only the things we can’t handle?
Do we see all of our lives as belonging to him?
What happens when we trust our own sense of navigation instead of the GPS? Nowadays with Waze and Google Maps, we are given traffic information and updates that take into account accidents.
What would our lives look like if we allowed the Lord to freely rule over all aspects of our lives? Our careers? our relationships?
God wants to set the trajectory and direction of your life! And he will! Our job is to trust him!
Proverbs 3:7–
Proverbs 3:7–10 CSB
Don’t be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will be healing for your body and strengthening for your bones. Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
Our wisdom leads to foolishness–God’s wisdom leads to life.
Proverbs 3:7–10 CSB

Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
Proverbs 3:
Our wisdom leads to foolishness–God’s wisdom leads to life
What we also see is that wisdom and worship are connected
Proverbs 3:11–12 CSB
Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son, and do not loathe his discipline; for the Lord disciplines the one he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.
This is the only one of the 6 commands given that does not provide a result that comes from obedience, but a why. It is important to see the heart of God, here the “father” talking to his “son” provides a why for him to be encouraged in.
Trust allows God to discipline us because God’s discipline is for our good and ultimately for His glory.
Conclusion:
Wisdom is more about knowing right and wrong, it is about knowing God.
How do we learn how to live with wisdom in life and relationships? We have to live in close fellowship with God.
Trusting in the Lord leads us to trusting and obeying Christ:
Matthew 7:21
Matthew 7:24–27 CSB
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.”
There is an old Hymn that says,
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus name.
On Christ the solid rock I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand,
all other ground is sinking sand.
