I. INTRO
A. Where We’ve Been
a. We’ve talked @ length about Gifts o the spirit
1. They r Spirit empowered grace gifts 2 witness & live out the function & call God has given
2. We r not called 2 b individual Christians but 2 live in community w/Jesus @the center where we work 2gether as 1, representing Jesus 2 a world that doesn’t know him
i. Paul commonly uses the metaphor o “body of christ” 4 the Church cause...
-like a body we r 2 seamlessly work 2gether serving in diff. functions all for the same goal.
3. Jesus knew that we couldn’t do it on our own & so he sent his H.S. 2 empower us 2 live out Jesus’ mission.
*Which he tells us in
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
b. Proclaiming the gospel, liberty to captives, & the year o God’s favor… along w/ healing & setting free the oppressed was Jesus’ mission statement.
1. If we r his Body, then it’s our mission statement 2!!
2. Jesus knew that we couldn’t do it on our own & so he sent his H.S. 2 empower us 2 live out Jesus’ mission.
i. Hence the gifts o the Spirit
ii. But we’re not seeing this in the US as much...
iii. How do we c these gift manifest?
B. Where We’re Going
B. Where We’re Going
a. 2day & next week we r going 2 be talking about how we c the gifts work in our life practically, not just theoretically
C. Main Text
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

D. Pray
E. Context
a. Paul doesn’t expressly discuss the gifts in this context
1. But he is talking about living a spirit filled life which is in stark contrast to living to gratify the flesh
b. Further more, we can’t conjure the gifts o the H.S. (That would b witchcraft)
b. We can’t conjure the gifts o the H.S. (That would b witchcraft)
1. God is in charge, not us- We don’t get 2 decide, HE does!
i. Paul tells us in...
11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
1 Cor 12:
- “As He wills”!! not as we will not as we c fit, as the Spirit wills
2. God, by His Spirit, gives the gifts depending on the needs o the church according 2 His wisdom
i. So, we do not conjure the Spirits, but the Spirit gifts us graciously as he sees fit
-So how do we c the gifts manifest in our midst?
-Do we have a roll 2 play in seeing the gifts manifest?
-How do we know when the H.S. wants us to use the gifts God’s given us?
*I believe that if we apply the principles found in …we will begin 2 c 'em manifest
* & not just in here, but in the market place just like we read in the book o Acts
*Let’s look at what Paul encourages in about...
II. BODY
A. Spirit Empowered Living
a. We live a Spirit empowered life by walking by the Spirit
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Gal 5:
1. Walking is a biblical metaphor for living
2. Paul ties walking & living together in...
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
i. walking by the Spirit is another way of saying living by the Spirit.
ii. How do we walk by the spirit?
b. Walk by the Spirit through His power
1. How does a person walk?
i. By the strength & balance o 1’s legs
2. The Spirit carries us in life by his power! (Power 4 what?)
i. The Spirit empowers us to live a christ-like life
Gal 5:22-
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
- The fruit o the spirit is not inherently human…these actions 2ward others r not natural 2 humans
- They r supernatural & come by the empowering o God’s spirit in our life!
*U’ve heard the phrase “Human decency? - what does that imply
~humans naturally r loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, etc...
~This is not natural…what happens when some1 hurts us, betrays us, etc.?
~We respond in kind…not w/kindness, right?
-We must walk by the spirit if we expect fruit o the spirit.
*So, the Spirit empowers us 2 live a christ-like life...
ii. & The Spirit empowers us w/ Spiritual gifts
-w/out Spiritual Gifts in our life we will never fully fulfill Jesus’ mission found in :
*Preach good news, freedom, & the Lord’s favor /
*heal the sick, & set those in bondage free
c. Walk by the Spirit through His Guidance
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Gal 5:
1. We don’t only walk by the strength o our legs but by the direction o our mind
2. The Spirit guides us practically in our life.
i. It’s the gentle prompting & sometimes not so gentle nudges o God’s Spirit directing us like a bridle & reigns on a horse
-or a cadence call
*Illust. Navy bootcamp marching
*We found our rythym & cues 4 moving 2gether w/our cadence caller
-Paul essentially calls the spirit our cadence caller by encouraging us 2...
d. Walk by the Spirit through keeping in step
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
1. “keep in step” means walk in line behind
i. *Illust. Navy bootcamp marching
-We found our rhythm & cues 4 moving 2gether w/our cadence caller
-the caller would use #’s 1-4 in a rhythmic kind o song
*1 & 3= R foot, 2 & 4= L foot
~That way we all start w/the same foot & move 2gether
~It would look like… (demonstrate)
*What’s the spirit’s cadence…rhythm?
2. The Spirit’s cadence is love
14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Gal 5:
3. What happens 2 the group if even just 1 person gets out o rhythm?
i. It disrupts the whole group’s pace, & direction
ii. Same is true when the church gets outa step w/the Spirit’s cadence
-What’s it look like when we get outa
-This is...
B. Fighting the Spirit’s cadence
2. The Spirit’s cadence is love
(remember the spirit’s direction is like guiding a horse w/bridle & reigns)
a. Like a horse we can fight against the Spirit
1. Have u ever seen a horse fight against the reigns o the rider?
i. How do we fight against the spirit
b. We fight the Spirit by gratifying our own desires
Gal 5:16-17
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
1. When Paul says flesh, he means our own carnel desires.
i. These selfish desires wage war against the Spirit
1. Selfish desires manifest as works of the flesh
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal 5:19-
i. If we wanna c Spiritual Gifts manifest in our life (not only in the sanctuary but also in the market place) we cannot gratify the desires o the flesh!
-there will be no words of knowledge / wisdom to those living to feed the flesh
-There will be no healings, signs / wonders to those living to feed our selfish appetites
ii. How do we keep from gratifying selfish desires?
2. Repent
3. Starve the flesh (stand firm against these desires)
-stop pulling the reigns o the Spirit who’s trying to lead us!
i. What we feed grows so don’t feed the beast
Gal 6:
7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
(So, what do we do?)
4. Kill the desires
:
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
-Crucifixion is painful! -so putting 2 death our evil passions & desires r 2, but it’s paramount if we wanna c Spiritual gifts & fruit manifest in our life!
-It’s also impossible if we r not living by the power of God’s spirit in our life
5. Yield to the Spirit
-stop pulling the reigns o the Spirit who’s trying to lead us!
*The more we yield the more we hear the H.S.’s promptings
*& the more we fight the reigns the more callous we become
