True Repentance

To repent is to turn from one thing to another. To be repentant, you must turn away from your sin and turn to God.

Psalm 51:1 NASB95
Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.

The repentant sinner recognizes that God is a compassionate God.

If you do not recognize the lovingkindness of God then you do not know His character and are left with hopelessness.

Have courage! Our God is compassionate!

Psalm 51:2 NASB95
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:1–2 NASB95
Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.

The repentant

The repentant sinner wants his or her sins to be removed completely.

The repentant sinner does not tolerate sin in his or her life, he or she wants it to be “blotted out.”

Psalm 51:3 NASB95
For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.
ps.51:

The repentant sinner acknowledges that he or she is completely guilty before God.

Psalm 51:3 NASB95
For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.
ps.51:
Psalms 51:3

Psalm 51:3–4 NASB95
For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.

The repentant sinner acknowledges that he or she is guilty before God.

The repentant sinner agrees with God that he or she is guilty and that God is just in condemning him or her. There is no debating with God about what is right and wrong, the repentant sinner agrees completely that he or she did what is evil.

Psalm 51:5–6 NASB95
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
ps. 51:5-6

The repentant sinner is humble. He or she recognizes who her or she is and who God is, and leaves no place for pride. God is holy, the sinner is not.

The repentant sinner recognizes that God desires truth. He desires repentance from the heart, not a fake repentance.

Psalm 51:7–9 NASB95
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.
ps. 51:7-

Sin has such an effect on the repentant sinner that to not have the sin removed is the worst of all fates. Sin wears away at the heart and the repentant sinner desires a reconciled relationship with God.

Psalm 51:10–11 NASB95
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
ps.

The repentant sinner wants a new heart — a heart that loves God and what is good.

The repentant sinner recognizes that his or her heart is evil.

Psalm 51:12–13 NASB95
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.
ps.51:12-
Psalm 51:14–15 NASB95
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.

The repentant sinner desires that other sinners will learn the LORD’s ways and do what is right.

Psalm 51:14–15 NASB95
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.
ps.51:14-

The repentant sinner desires to worship God with a full heart.

Psalm 51:16–17 NASB95
For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
ps. 51:16-

The repentant sinner recognizes that God does not want anything other than simple obedience.

Sacrificing much to God means nothing — you could give Him all of your possession but if you do not obey Him it means nothing.

1 John 1:8–9 NASB95
If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We must confess that we have sinned, and we must believe that in Jesus — because of His sinless life, death, burial, and physical resurrection from the dead — our sins can be forgiven.

What is the state of your heart? Have you genuinely repented.
