Obituary

Patricia W. Scherer, 78, of Howland, passed away Monday, November 25, 2019 at 8:59 p.m. in the intensive care unit of Mercy Health St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

She was born April 7, 1941 in Scranton, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Edward and Irene Knapik Hart and was raised by her aunt and uncle Frank and Josephine Butash in Hempstead, NY and resided with them for 18 years.

She graduated from Homestead High School in Hempstead, Long Island.  Pat received her license as a practical nurse in 1960 after graduating from Mercy Hospital School of Practical Nursing in Rockville Center, Long Island and was employed by Mercy Hospital in Scranton.  She became a mobile insurance examiner for several paramedical companies doing insurance medical exams.  She was employed as a medical examiner for 42 years.  She also was the owner and manager of Scherer Examinations, Inc. for a number of years.

Pat was a member of Niles Christian Assembly Church in Niles and belonged to sobriety. She was a die hard Yankee fan and was a very generous and loving person with her best friends Pat Hur and Sandra Johnson. She volunteered for Guardian Angels and Menagerie

She is survived by her daughter Debra (Ken) Koehler of Champion and a son Joseph Filip of Lowell, Massachusetts.  She is also survived by her four grandchildren and two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and by her ex-husband and friend Bob Glaze.

Besides her parents, Pat was preceded in death by two husbands Joseph Filip and William Scherer; a son Timothy Filip who passed in 2001; two brothers Edward and Gerald Hart and a sister Jean Reha.

Calling hours will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. in the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home.

A Funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Aaron Newell, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pineview Memorial Park in Warren.

How Great Thou Art

1 Corinthians 15:40–44 HCSB

There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is different from that of the earthly ones. There is a splendor of the sun, another of the moon, and another of the stars; for one star differs from another star in splendor. So it is with the resurrection of the dead: Sown in corruption, raised in incorruption; sown in dishonor, raised in glory; sown in weakness, raised in power; sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

A few things I know about Pat.

You always knew where you stood

She never pretended to be something she was not

She loved Jesus, more than anything.

The scripture we just read offers us hope. Human’s were created in the image of God but we are not God.

we were created to be eternal but our bodies, having experienced the ravages of sin will all drop and decay

Our hope is not in the things that we do, the body that we have, no matter how well we care for it will fall apart.

Pat knew this, and yet she didn’t let it stop her from living. She was faithful to her savior, faithful to her church, and stood for what she believed.

Taken in turn we realize that we have hope, not because of anything we have done but because of this miracle of Faith in the one that died and rose for us.

Pat recognized something something summed up in the following scripture.

1 Corinthians 15:51–57 HCSB

Listen! I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. For this corruptible must be clothed with incorruptibility, and this mortal must be clothed with immortality. When this corruptible is clothed with incorruptibility, and this mortal is clothed with immortality, then the saying that is written will take place: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? Now the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

1 Corinthians

Pat had a favorite song. Every time it was sung she could be heard worshiping in a way that should be envy. Her response was that of a person who knew full well that she really did have victory and that victory truly came from the God she served.

We want to sing that song today, a fitting way to close this chapter of Pats life as she steps into the next.

Victory in Jesus

Committal

Jesus said: "Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor."

Almighty God, into your hands we commend your daughter Pat, in sure and certain hope of resurrection to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

This body we commit to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Yes, says the Spirit, they will rest from their labors for their deeds follow them.
