Don’t be a Party Pooper!
16 As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart.
(). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles. Many times in church we have party poopers. Those that wont praise the Lord and will get mad if you do. As I said on Thursday we have a God to delight in, He is clearly worthy of the praise. As in your Sunday School Lesson 2 Samuel gives and account of the praise David offered to the Lord when the Ark of the Covenant returns.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
The word says David was leaping and dancing before the Lord. David had great caused to praise God. This was his second attempt to bring the Ark back to its rightful place. The first attempt resulted in the death of Uzzah who touch the Ark and angered the Lord. The was left at the house of Obededom and result was his house was blessed. This time he said we are going to do this right. The details are not given in the Chronicle version but here in 2 Samuel we see the details surrounding the movement of the Ark around praise. As the Ark approached the CIty after 6 steps an ox and a fattened animal was sacrificed. Its in this chapter we see David danced before the Lord with all his might! His linen overlay could not contain or cover as he danced mightily!
The concerning events around this account is verse 16 16 As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
She was an obvious party spoiler. Or a party pooper.
The first issue i see is she was not where she need to be.
She was looking out the window instead being amongst the people who were praising.
She likely had the spirit of her father. A Saul Spirit is a dangerous spirit because its a spirit that did not seek God. And we know God is a rewarder of those that seek him.
Saul lost his anointing because he disobeyed God.
God gave Saul the qualities necessary to be king of Israel (), but Saul from the outset disobeyed Samuel’s charge to do nothing apart from him. () In impatience, Saul put his own choices above God’s.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
3. Even so, his initial conquest was successful, and he focused on growth of territory and numbers. ()
4. Early into his rule, Saul acted foolishly against God’s commands related specifically to Saul’s rule. Therefore, Saul’s rule and anointing were already forfeit, even though he would sit on the throne for a good while longer. God had already moved on to another leader, a man after His own heart. ()
Thirdly she allow hate to rest in her heart.
Hate will cause ugliness to grow in your heart. The word said she despised him in her heart. If you read quickly you may think she despised him because he was praising God which would be bad in itself but she was harboring some unresolved feelings. As these things unfolded the Art the praise she could only despise and focus on how distasteful his dance was. She looking out the window can only see that his linen ephod my have lift up and exposed David. She was more concerned about on lookers that the honor that was given to God.
As we talked about on Thanksgiving. This is another of the 14 psalms that corresponds to historical events in David’s life, 1 Chronicale 16 which corresponds exactly with psalm 96 shows us why we should praise the Lord! Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!
2 Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
4 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the LORD made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts!
9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the LORD, for he comes,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.
The LORD Reigns
97 The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad!
2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries all around.
4 His lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all the peoples see his glory.
7 All worshipers of images are put to shame,
who make their boast in worthless idols;
worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and is glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgments, O LORD.
9 For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods.
10 O you who love the LORD, hate evil!
He preserves the lives of his saints;
he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous,
and joy for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,
and give thanks to his holy name!
Make a Joyful Noise to the LORD
98 A PSALM.
1 Oh sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2 The LORD has made known his salvation;
he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
5 Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody!
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD!
