Help is on the way!
Intro:
Hope......is a powerful thing!
(pause)
I’m convinced that we all need HOPE!
(pause)
And everybody has Hoped for something at least one time in their lives.....
Barrel:
I can remember hoping for so many different things over the years
.......and in every situation my hope was sitting directly on top of an expectation that I had related to that particular situation.
(pause)
And most of the time.....
Our expectations and our hope are empowered by what we are believing in!
And some of the time.....
All of this hope and expectation is happening right behind some trouble.............
(slight pause and expound)
And for me.....
The reason that hope is so powerful is because it is HOPE that has enough power to hold God’s promises.....
(pause)
[Transitional statement]
And it is in this Advent season (the first season of the Christian Church, leading into Christmas) as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ that I want to begin by talking about the theme of hope.....
......by looking at Isaiah’s prophecy to the people of God in this Old Testament reading....
(pause)
Look at it now....
According to the text.....
The first way to recognize the Coming One or the Messiah is to understand that he will come from humble beginnings.
“A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse”
In other words.....
“A twig is going to sprout up out of the stump”
Now one chapter earlier Isaiah tells us how Jerusalem would be destroyed or cut down like a forest and nothing would be seen but ashes.....
And here he says.....
......after it has been cut down......God is going to raise something up out of that very same place!
(pause)
And so for everybody that’s looking and saying.....
“Yep that’s dead, or cut off”
Everybody confirming with what they can see.....
......are going to look at what they thought was dead and have to take back their words because according to the text...
........ something is growing!
(slight pause)
“and a branch shall grow out of his roots”
In other words....
From that little ole twig........
.......A Tree is going to come forth
A Twig is going to grow into a Tree.
(pause)
[Expound - Though it were dead, yet shall it live!]
(pause)
Look at it now....
The text says....
......the next way to identify the Hope that is coming to us is by looking for Supernatural qualities
And according to the text we will be able to see....
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding
The Spirit of counsel and power
The Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord
And so......
....the humanity of Christ would receive a download or a downpour from God the father and everyone would be able to witness these Godly qualities and attributes coming out of his life.
(pause)
And I believe that is is important so that we understand......
Our hope did not come empty handed!
.........but instead he was carrying something that he knew we would need and benefit from!
(pause)
And so.....
......our prayer should be
“Lord take away my carnal desires, and help me to connect with the spiritual things that you brought because you knew I would need them!”
(pause and expound)
Look at it now.....
The text shows us......
....how fair judgement is another characteristic of the Hope!
In other words.....
.....he is explaining to the people that this ruler is going to use rigtheousness to arrive at his decisions
And in the original hebrew language....
......this verse is stating that the Coming One will have quick understanding
.....and one of the remarkable things about it is that it wont come from what is seen or heard, but this hebrew meaning deals more with smell or scent
(pause)
.......Christ would be able to
I can mess up what I think I see.....
and....
I can mess up what I think I hear....
But............
I can’t mess up what I smell........
(pause and expound)
And I believe that Isaiah is trying to show us....
......that Christ is so instinctively decisive that he wont have to learn from what he hears or what he sees....
........... but just like smell, he will be able to figure out what you can’t figure out any other way!
(pause)
And that’s good news.....
......especially when you run into a life situation that you don’t know how to figure out!
When you’re trying to figure out........
"what kind of trouble is this I’m in?”
It’s good to know that Christ is not CONFUSED!”
(pause and optional expound)
Look at it now....
The text says....
.....the next thing we should look for is that former enemies would coexist in harmony.
(pause)
He says....
......there is a restorative power in the hand or our helper
.......God has the power to put things back in order the way they are supposed to be!
(pause)
And......
