39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
mat10.3
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mark 8.34-
What was Jesus talking about here?
Save your life to loose it and loose it to save it...
I am convinced that life has two challenges:
1. Find ourselves - how do we find ourselves?
We fine ourselves when we discover our purpose.
Our first priority is to find ourselves!
Nothing is more important for a child of God to find themselves
Your purpose… makes you solid, secure, grounded
2. Our second priority is to loose ourselves!
How do we do that?
When our purpose becomes bigger than us!
Many people will never do either in their life… won’t find themselves and won’t loose themselves.
That’s way most people’s greatest ambitions for the weekend is to drink beer...
Some will find them selves but will never loose themselves.
Very few ppl will find themselves and loose themselves!
Purpose of this lesson:
Discover your purpose
Place that purpose in a place that is so big that you can loose ourselves in the process!
This is what Jesus was teaching in our text.
First question is: How do we find ourself?
By Discovering our purpose.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
God has thoughts and plans for me…
When you woke up this morning, God was thinking about you!!!
We are not an accident.
We are divinely placed here!
Have you ever recieved a timely text that said simply; “praying for you”, “love you”, “thinking about you”?
is God’s text to you!
God’s thinking about you!
God has plans for you!
So the question is “How do we find our purpose?”
Two questions you should ask
What am I passionate about?
Passion is often linked with purpose.
What I love to do is often what I should do.
Passion is the great energizer!
Passion set you apart!
When you are passionate about something, it makes up the difference.
When you are passionate about something, it makes up the difference.
When you are passionate the facts don’t matter.
ii. What are my gifts?
God give gifts expecting them to be used...
We have a lot of junk taught on this on TV and radio...
Someone find something they like and claim it’s a gift but they have no ability or opportunity to really do it.
You can claim a gift of wisdom all you want…
You can claim to have a gift of faith all you want...
You can claim to be a giver all you want...
How do you know if you are?
If you can take from your gift of wisdom, faith, finance and give to someone else.
That is not really the right answer anyway.
When I ask what are your gifts = natural abilities
When you figure out your natural gifting and put them to work it is energizing...
Question: What are things you have done that fulfill you?
In life and in church
When you are working from your weaknesses, you get wore out.
When you are working from your strengths, you focused and energized.
When you work from your strengths, your capacity to grow, grows!
You find purpose by discovering your passion and giftedness.
How do we loose ourselves?
When you give ourself to a purpose that is bigger than ourselves!
When you give ourself to a purpose that is bigger than ourselves!
When you are bigger than your purpose, you have a career.
When your purpose is bigger then you, you have a calling!
Step along the Journey of Purpose:
I want to make a difference!
I want to make a difference doing something that makes a difference!
I want to make a difference doing something that makes a difference with people who make a difference!
“One is too small a number to achieve greatness!” John Maxwell
I want to make a difference doing something that makes a difference with people who make a difference at a time that makes a difference!
We have to make it count!
Let me put it a different way...
Success vs Significance
Success is when I add value to myself.
Significance is when I add value to others.
You find yourself in success.
You loose yourself in Significance
It is when we begin to add value to others that we begin to loose ourselves because now the cause is greater!
Our why is bigger than us
When you find your why, you will find your way!
My purpose is greater than me!
Every time you put yourself into someone else everything changes.
