Intro
Text - Romans 3.24-26
Title - Propitiation (Part 4, Key Words of the Christian Life)
Definition
Propitiation is a word that is closely connected with justification.
Definition (Dictionary)
Propitiation - (dic.) the action of appeasing the anger/wrath of a god, spirit or person
Definition (Biblical)
Grk.
HILASMOS, propitiation - the expiation, a means whereby God’s wrath is appeased
Grk.
HILASTERION, propitiation, mercy seat - the place where God’s wrath is appeased
Grk.
HILASKOMAI, be merciful - to make propitious, propitiate, to appease
Difference between secular and biblical uses:
Among pagans, they believed that their gods were prone to get angry.
When misfortune happens, they believed the gods are angry.
The solution is to offer a sacrifice to appease their anger.
This is called propitiation.
In Christian doctrine, propitiation is applied in a different way.
God’s “wrath” is not some random displeasure against human activity.
God’s wrath is an expression of God’s holiness.
He is angry at sin because it is contrary to His holy nature and purpose.
Propitiation is the N.T. word for “atonement” of the O.T.
Atonement (Heb.
KAPPORET) is the means whereby the sins of the people of God are “covered” by the sacrifice of animal blood over the mercy seat.
(see illustration MERCY SEAT)
Atonement was fulfilled in the death of Christ for the sins of the world.
God provided His own means of propitiation
Biblical Definition
What is “propitiation”
Propitiation is the satisfaction of God’s holiness through the death of Jesus Christ, in order to demonstrate the His righteousness, love and mercy to anyone who believes.
God’s righteousness is demonstrated
God is righteous because He did not tolerate sin
He judged sin in the body of Jesus Christ
God is righteous because He did not demand from the sinner what they could not provide
He provided for Himself!
God is righteous in that He can “justify” anyone who believes!
now that the law has been satisfied
God’s love is expressed
God is love before He was angry at sin!
God is love in that He expiated His own wrath!
Not by killing the sinners, but by providing a sacrifice in the place of sinners!
God’s wrath could not stop Him from loving the sinners!
God’s mercy is made available to all
God’s mercy is available for as long as we need it, anytime we need it!
1 John 2.1-2
We can always come to God for strength and refreshing
Hebrews 4.16
Conclusion
Christ’s propitiatory work remains effective today.
Let’s not waste the privilege of coming to God anytime and everytime.
Illustration: Esther was afraid to come before the King of Persia
she was going in behalf of her people, the Jews
she fasted for 3 days
she was going to defy an established law among Persian nobility
she was surprised at the gracious act of the king!
If kings can do that out of human affection, how much more will God extend his grace and mercy toward us
we will not be violating a law that prohibits our coming to Him!
we will be doing what God wants us to do all along!
