Title - Do Not Quench the Spirit

Questions

Questions
What does it mean to “quench the Spirit”?
How do we quench the Spirit of God?
Why should we not quench the Spirit of God in us?

The Main Point

The Holy Spirit is the most precious gift that a child of God will ever receive. Instead of wasting the opportunity we should be enjoying the incomparable benefits of having the Spirit of God in us.

Sermon Points

Why not?

Luke 3:16 NKJV
16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a also a baptism of fire.
fire - God’s awesome and consuming Presence!
- tongues of fire appeared
fire = life
fire = power; all energy is fueled by fire
The Holy Spirit came with power!
the fire is the power of the Holy Spirit burning in you!

To quench the Spirit is to out the source of life of the Christian!

Ephesians 6:16 NKJV
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
quench - extinguish, to make ineffective
fiery darts - burning missiles

To quench the Spirit is to extinguish the power that makes you effective and fruitful!

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NKJV
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6.19
Ephesians 4:30 NKJV
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirit came as a GIFT,
But we do not own the Holy Spirit - The Holy Spirit OWNS US
The proof of ownership - SEAL - is ITSELF!

To quench the Spirit is to resist or defy its ownership of us!

How do we do it?

Ephesians 4:30–31 NKJV
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
Ephesians 4:30–32 NKJV
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
grieve - to make sad; to cause to feel sorrow
the Spirit is grieved when we harbor evil feelings and thoughts

The Spirit is quenched by our ill feelings and thoughts against other people.

James 4:4–5 NKJV
4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
Friendship with the world is engaging in spiritual adultery
enemy - a person who wishes to cause injury to another
The Spirit of God “yearns jealously” in us!
we offend the Holy Spirit when we make Him jealous to the point of envy!

The Spirit is quenched by our worldly affairs!

Verse 5 - “yearn” - it means to long for; to desire strongly for something

The Spirit is quenched when its “yearnings” are not attended to or met.

What can we do?

Since the Holy Spirit is like a fire - FEED HIM WITH MORE FUEL!
Since the Holy Spirit is like a lover - SATISFY HIM WITH PURE DEVOTION AND UNDIVIDED ATTENTION!
What are the yearnings of the Spirit?
Worship!
Romans 8:15 NKJV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
Prayer!
Romans 8:26 NKJV
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Godly walk!
Galatians 5:16–17 NKJV
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
the Spirit and flesh are opposed!
Submission!
James 4:5–6 NKJV
5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? 6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
James 4.

Conclusion

The Christian is only as strong as the Holy Spirit in his/her life!

The greatest danger or threat to a Christian is not -
poverty - deprivation of earthly things
loneliness - departure of friends and loved ones
sickness and diseases
death

The greatest danger to a Christian is the fire going out!

imagine walking in the darkness of a wilderness without fire!
Matthew 25:8 NKJV
8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’
the foolish virgins will left behind because their fire have gone out!
going out - extinguished!
DON’T LET YOUR FIRE GO OUT! KEEP THEM BURNING!

SONG - Burning the Midnight Oil!
I want to be burning, burning the Midnight oil,
With my lamp all trimmed and glowing
A vessel full of the HOLY GHOST!
I will shine the light through the night, to the Word I must be loyal.
There is a virgin bride burning the Midnight oil.
