Intro

I’ve had it with my own plans.
I have the curse of ideation. Strengths Finder 2.0 tells me that the ability to generate solutions to problems and to brainstorm concepts is natural to me.
But I often proceed with out adequate knowledge.
On Friday I soldered some copper pipe in my utility room so that we could get water and ice from our refrigerator. At one point I notice that the wall behind the flame was showing signs of discoloration. I felt it and it was very warm to the touch - especially right next to the gas line. Later, I burned both thumbs within the span of 10 seconds. After 2 failed attempts at obtaining a lead-free joint, I went back to youtube to learn more about sweating pipes. It turns out my flux was old and I was overheating the fittings. Another trip to Menard’s, and $67 later, I had what I needed. (including a fire extinguisher)
Isaiah 9:6 NIV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

To us a child is born -

As the wonderful counselor, his miracles and plans are far better than anything we can imagine. Let’s follow him.

As the Mighty God, he defeats enemies easily, let’s stop fighting our own wars.

As the Everlasting Father, he loves us perfectly. Let’s delight in his love.

As the Prince of Peace, he reconciles us to him while we are still enemies. Let’s welcome his rule over us.

1 Corinthians 1:22–25 NIV
22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
God’s answer to everything that has ever terrorized us is a child. The power of God is so far superior to the Assyrias and all the big shots of this world that he can defeat them by coming as a mere child. His answer to the bullies swaggering through history is not to become an even bigger bully. His answer is Jesus. (Ray Ortlund)

1. Count on him, he does Miracles!

264 Miracles listed in the Bible.
63 healing
57 nature
40 provision
37 judgment
26 demons
16 affliction
14 communication
14 resurrection
Miracles in John’s Gospel
water to wine (quality)
healing a Nobleman’s son (space)
healing of the man at the pool (time)
feeding 5,000 (quantity)
walking on water (nature)
healing of a blind man (misfortune)
raising of Lazarus (death)
John 20:30–31 NIV
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
29
The purpose of miracles seems to be tied to belief rather than making life comfortable and safe.
John 21:3 NIV
3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Have you seen miracles? I have!
I have seen miraculous healing! (Dr’s son, recent)
I have seen God provide! ($$, answers to prayer)
I have seen God alter nature (CA fires, Erwin’s church was passed over) (Northern WI: 24 hr pharmacy trip through tough snow and ice)
Do you want a miracle? Align yourself to God’s will. “God, use us to make Jesus Christ known in our community.”
God does miracles today. Perhaps the most interesting is the phenomena of the dreams of Muslims. About 25% of Muslims who have expressed faith in Christ cite a dream that draws them to himself. Jesus appears to them as a great light. Or he cites Scripture they didn’t know previously. He tells them to do something that they don’t understand. They understand that it is Jesus and they want to know more about him. So, they seek out Christians and the truth.
John 14:12–14 NIV
12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
We need God to supernaturally provide for us here and now. And he is able.
Why should God bless us as a church if we aren’t doing the primary thing that God asked the church to do?

2. Follow him, he is Wise!

Isaiah 29:14–16 NIV
14 Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.” 15 Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?” 16 You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”?
1 Corinthians 1:22–24 NIV
22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
1 cor 2 24-26
Listen to the Lord

We have a loving Counselor

1 Corinthians 1:24–26 NIV
24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

Look for wisdom with your mind.

ps 16
Psalm 32:8 NIV
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Listen for wisdom with your heart.

Listen for wisdom in meditation.
Psalm 16:7 NIV
7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

Seek wisdom with your relationships.

Proverbs 13:10 NIV
10 Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
in undergrad classes I learned that all truth is God’s truth. In his wisdom, God shares knowledge and the ability to gain wisdom.
