is centered around the presentation of Jesus at the temple. The events of this passage occur some 40 days after the birth of Jesus. Throughout these 13 quick verses we are told details about Mary, Joseph, Jesus, a man named Simeon, and a woman named Anna. While these may seem like 4 different stories, they all share a common theme in - fulfillment of the Word of God.
Today we are going to see a few different aspects of God’s law, or God’s Word being fulfilled in this passage as we look at Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Anna, and Simeon.

When I Think Of The Promises Of God, I'm Reminded ...  PRO

You know God is a covenant making God- throughout the story of the Bible we read of these covenants- Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, and then the New Covenant- these covenants frame out the relationship with God and God’s people. But here’s the thing about Covenants, they are binding for multiple parties. Covenants are agreements on how multiple people are going to behave towards one another.

Now, what we must remember, as this chapter of Luke will show, faithfulness and the Word of God is a 2 way street- it will be faithful to us, and we are called to be faithful to it. Mary and Joseph show us that we are to be faithful to the word and law of God. You know, if you think anyone would get a pass on the law of Moses it would be the Earthly parents of the Son of God. After all, they are holding the only perfect human being to be born, that would give them justification to skip some of the ritual law, right? Nope.

It was that evening that a steward found him preparing to sleep in a secluded corner on deck. The steward confronted him, accusing him of being a stowaway. Protesting his innocence, the young man produced his ticket. The steward apologized, but then asked "but why are you sleeping here on deck, when you have quarters below"? When the young man replied that he had only enough money for the passage but no room, the steward explained that the room was included in the price of the ticket. As the steward led the astonished young man to his room, they passed the large dining room where a sumptuous meal was being laid out. The young man peeked in and saw that the room was filling with people, and the steward told the young man that he could be seated for dinner in about fifteen minutes, as that was included also.
So many times we understand that we have redemption, and we look forward to the beauty of Heaven, but we are ignorant of so much that is in between. We fail to grasp all that God has prepared for us.

Mary and Joseph were Jews, and as Jews they had a responsibility to obey the laws of Moses. In the commandments for women giving birth were laid out-

Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If a woman conceives and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days. As at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4 Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying. She shall not touch anything holy, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying are completed

And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, 7 and he shall offer it before the LORD and make atonement for her. Then she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child, either male or female. 8

Mary and Joseph followed these commands from God- they were not optional for them. Their lives were formed in the keeping of these commands like no unclean food, giving sacrifices, laws for proper relations, and on caring for others. There were so many laws that governed their lives, but as a Jew there was expectation that you would obey them. As Christians we can often take our liberty for granted. Paul said in that ““All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.” Because of Jesus’ work we have been released from the Levitical code- we are set free- there is no law that binds us like there was for Jews. Listen to For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.  For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved

We may not be bound by the law, but friends we are bound by covenant with God.

When I think of the promises of God, I’m reminded of the story of the young man who had a dream to go to America. He scrimped and saved, and did everything in his power to save enough money to buy a ticket on a boat bound for America. The day came when he had precisely the amount of money needed, and he went immediately and purchased that ticket. The ship was to leave the next day, so with great excitement, and with all of his possessions wrapped neatly in a blanket he boarded the ship, and settled down for his great journey. After the first couple of days, the young man had exhausted the meager supply of food that he had been able to scrimp and save in his blanket, and he began to get hungry. He knew that if he could only survive for a few days more, he would enjoy all the riches that America promised.
