Temptation Defined

James 1:12–16 KJV 1900
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.

Three Categories of Temptation

1 John 2:15–16 KJV 1900
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
The lust of the flesh- the desire to fulfill natural appetites in sinful ways- - David’s sin with Bathsheba
The lust of the eyes- - the sin of Achan- the desire for things that we see- cars, homes,
Pride of Life- the desire to impress and to make ourselves appear great- - Nebuchadnezzar’s pride

Combatting Temptation

- Jesus temptation
We combat temptation with scripture
We need to know the Word of God- - hid in my heart
We need to obey the Word of God- - taking heed
Lust of the flesh- Sexual sin- & - satisfy the natural desires of our flesh inside the bounds that God intended
Lust of the eyes- - learn contentment
Pride of Life- - something when he is nothing - having the mind of Christ who humbled himself
Good news- - not allow us to be tempted above our ability to bear it.
Victory comes through our relationship with Jesus Christ- - Paul’s struggle against temptation
James 4:7 KJV 1900
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
1 Peter 5:8 KJV 1900
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Romans 6:11–14 KJV 1900
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
