Pre-fall partnership -> man ruins this relationship
covenant = God makes promise & in exchange asks the partner to fulfill a commitment
the purpose of the covenant was to ultimately renew/restore His partnership with everyone else [pre-fall relationship]
God makes 4 covenants with His people
Noah -
a one sided covenant; God knew that His people would ultimately mess up again, but God promised to never destroy the earth again
Abraham - ;
God promises a huge family & a lot of land to rule over. Abraham just had to TRUST God & train up his family to do what is right and what is just and God would ultimately bless all people through this family
circumcision was a sign of commitment to the covenant
Israel - ; , ;
God asks them to obey a set of laws, which are ultimately for their good. If they do this, God promises to bless them & that they will become a people who represent Him to the rest of humanity
King David -
God asks David & his descendants to partner with Him by leading Israel in obeying the laws & doing what is right & just. God promises that one day a son David will come and extend God’s kingdom of peace and blessings over all nations.
We ultimately see that Israel fails on their end of these covenants by turning from God’s law, worshipping other Gods, and allowing horrible injustices to run rampant.
They lose their land & are forced into exile. Hopeless?
In the midst of all of this, Israel had several prophets who talked about a day when God would restore these covenants in spite of Israel’s constant failure -> New Covenant
Despite all of Israel’s failures & mistakes, God was ultimately working towards the New Covenant that would restore His people
Man needed a savior because they could not fulfill the covenants on their own.
So God steps in one day to do it for them.
God’s people needed a true king, a king of kings. One who could truly save them from their sin.
