Mark 16:1–8 CSB
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb at sunrise. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” 4 Looking up, they noticed that the stone—which was very large—had been rolled away. 5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ” 8 They went out and ran from the tomb, because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone, since they were afraid. [Some of the earliest conclude with .]

I. Our doubt does not deter God.

Mark 16:1–4 CSB

A. Jesus predicted that all would fall away. They did.

Mark 16:1–4 CSB

Illus: At first glance in this passage the women look to be faithful in coming to the tomb of Jesus even after everyone else had scattered.
Yes, these women stuck around when the rest of the disciples were scared away from the cross.
That said the book of mark is intentional in showing what the women were coming to do.
They were not coming to see the risen Lord.
They were not coming by faith in the promise of Christ.
They were coming to mourn. They were coming to finish anointing the body with oils which was cut short because of the sabbath.
Yes it is an act of devotion, but it was an act of devotion with an acknowledgment of death.
This is the last domino to fall of all of Jesus’ followers.
It is the acknowledgment that even the women who were faithful thought Jesus was defeated.
mk 14:
Mark 14:27–28 CSB
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”

B. God’s big plan never has, nor never will be dependent on our faithfulness.

Mark 16:5–6 CSB
5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him.
mk 16:
Illus: From before the creation of the world, God intended to send Jesus to redeem the world.
God created men knowing that he would die for them.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden , that did not stop God from moving his plan forward.
When Abraham cheated on his wife, having a son with his servant, it did not stop God’s plan from moving forward.
When Isaac followed in his dad’s sinful footsteps, it did not stop God’s plans from moving forward.
When David committed adultery and murder, it id not stop God’s plan from moving forward.
When Pharoah murdered all the Israelite children, it did not stop God’s plan from moving forward.
When Judas betrayed Jesus, it did not stop God’s plan from moving forward.
When peter denied Jesus 3 times it did not stop God’s plan from moving forward.
When the women faithful even at the cross came to tomb expecting Jesus to be dead, it did not stop God’s plan from moving fowrard.
We are still watching God’s plan of redemption at work today. While we are faithless, God remains faithful. The promises of God find their yes and amen IN GOD! God has and will move his plan forward.
Do not focus on the women who came to find a dead body, but instead look to the God who always moves his big plan forward.
Ephesians 2:1–8 CSB
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. 3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, 5 made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! 6 He also raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might display the immeasurable riches of his grace through his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—

II. God redeems sinful men.

A. Jesus literally died.

Illus: The angel at this moment goes out of his way to show the details of Jesus’ death. He states that Jesus was crucified. He states shows where Jesus would have been laid. He makes clear that Jesus didn’t just fake his death but was literally dead.
Why is that important. If Jesus did not die, we would have no salvation.
Jesus death is just as important as his Resurrection.
It is Jesus death that paid for our sin, paid for our wickedness, and was our substitute.
It is his resurrection that secures our future hope.
Let’s be clear about Jesus— Jesus is God, he lived perfectly, he died perfectly, he rose again victoriously. That is the gospel. That is what God has done.
1 Cor 15:
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 CSB
1 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:1–6 CSB
1 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.
1 cor 15:

B. When Jesus rose from the dead, he went to his disciples.

Mark 16:7 CSB
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ”
Mark 16:5–6 CSB
5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they put him.
mk 16:
Illus: One of the details that often gets lost in the resurrection account is Jesus’ specific intent to go to Galilee.
What do I mean? Jesus purposely goes to to Galilee.
He could have told the women, tell the disciples to get there rear ends back to me. As God, resurrected, he had the authority to demand their return.
That said, he did not expect them to come to him, he went to them.
Jesus went to the town where the disciples are from. He went to the place they returned to.
That says SO MUCH about God. God does not look idly and say, if you can find salvation get it. Instead he pursues us.
He comes to where we are for us.
John 21:1–14 CSB
1 After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called “Twin”), Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 “I’m going fishing,” Simon Peter said to them. “We’re coming with you,” they told him. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 When daybreak came, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not know it was Jesus. 5 “Friends,” Jesus called to them, “you don’t have any fish, do you?” “No,” they answered. 6 “Cast the net on the right side of the boat,” he told them, “and you’ll find some.” So they did, and they were unable to haul it in because of the large number of fish. 7 The disciple, the one Jesus loved, said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer clothing around him (for he had taken it off) and plunged into the sea. 8 Since they were not far from land (about a hundred yards away), the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus told them. 11 So Simon Peter climbed up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 “Come and have breakfast,” Jesus told them. None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

III. Because of God’s faithfulness we are commissioned.

Mark 16:7–8 CSB
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ” 8 They went out and ran from the tomb, because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone, since they were afraid. [Some of the earliest conclude with .]

A. Our call is to be witnesses to the faithfulness of God.

Illus: Next week we will discuss the ending of Mark. We will talk about why some bibles include the verses 9 forward, some don’t, and some put an asterisk by them.
There is a commonality to all of the gospels… whether you look in verse 7, or verses 9- the end. All the gospels have come form of a commission.
All of them build an idea that if Jesus is who this book says he is, if he is raised from the dead, go tell someone.
That is important. The reaction God wants from you about His resurrection is your witness.
God was faithful in bringing His plan forward. We are called to be faithful in to bear witness.
mt 28:18-20
Matthew 28:18–20 CSB
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
