Wake up and look
The Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit
Men used their pen to write the words down
But the Holy Spirit inspired the words to be written
So the book of John was written several decades after this event took place
This in not like a LIVE on the moment dictation or transcript
This is John coming back by inspiration of the Holy Spirit & telling us the account that happened while he was with Jesus
And as he tells this story he remember some things that didn’t happen & he can’t figure out why they didn’t happen
So he puts in the story these are things that should’ve happened, but they didn’t
But I don’t know why we didn’t
The story is about Jesus coming to a place & He’s on His way to Galilee
He and His disciples had been down in Judea → which is in the southern part of Israel
They’re headed back to Galilee → which is in the north
And this is basically the first year of His ministry
And on His way back from Judea to Galilee the Bible says Jesus looks at His disciples → His students
And he must needs go through Samaria.
This is a funny statement to us in our English
In other words, Jesus was saying, “It’s not normal for us to go through Samaria” {show map}
Even though Samria is closer - that was the most direct route
But Jews in those days would walk ALL the way down to the Jordan Valley & then walk up the Valley back to Galilee - to keep from going through Samaria
Jesus looks at His disciples who were Jewish men & said we have a need
Can you imagine what His disciples thought right about now?
The tension between Samaritans & Jews were tense
There was incredible dislike & disdain for each other
Most theologians believe the Samaritans were apart of the northern tribes that had been lost
