How have you been hurt in your life by people not keeping their promises?
We all have at some point felt the pain of a broken promise.
What can we as Christians use to help us get over this feeling of hurt and disappointment?
Think about it and let’s see what God’s word says to us today!
Intro
Life is full of disappointments!
Many of us are used to dealing with broken promises aren’t we?
Illus: There were two shootings on Navy bases by service members this week.
This is doubly hard for me because it is the loss of life and it is betrayal.
A service member who has sworn (promised) to defend and protect the innocent and weak, takes life.
It is a huge broken promise.
Think of the promises in your life?
What promises have been broken?
How have you been hurt by these?
Yet, we as Christians have something that can help us in this life as we deal with these broken promises and await the return of Jesus Christ.
Principles of Faith
Context:
Isaiah is told to prophesy to Ahaz the King of Judah.
His enemies were coming against him.
(1)
Ahaz was afraid (2)
Isaiah was sent to encourage Ahaz (4) - “do not fear”
God challenges Ahaz to remain faithful in Him.
What can we see about God in these next few verses:
God does not leave us without confirmation of our faith in Him
(10-11) God’s grace extended through signs - evidence
(12-13) Ahaz knows not to test God - afraid
The Promise of salvation:
We know God is going to provide salvation through the tribe of Judah
Hoseah 1:7
We know that this refers to Jesus in his first coming and his second.
Heb 7:
God is promising to preserve a lineage for Jesus - the savior of God’s people
So, as Ahaz was king of Judah, God was promising him protection - salvation
We see this confirmed in (16) - future oriented - NT
This promise includes
a virgin birth (14)
Mt
A Son
Direct quote of Isaiah
A savior
Immanuel
A name used for God directly by Isaih
A present God
Jesus
Mt
Jesus - derivative of Joshua - “to call for help” Hebrew
Col
God promised to save his people and we can see this come to fruition in Jesus Christ, the incarnation
When we celebrate his birth we celebrate God saving his people
obedient (15-16) son
This is how God saves his people
reference to the obedience required to fulfil the covenant of works that Adam failed to uphold
This salvation is offered to us through faith
Conclusion
Here is a wonderful fulfillment of a promise of God where we can see it clearly prophesied in the OT and fulfilled in the NT
How can Christians get through times of disappointment and hurt due to broken promises:
We look to the promises of God that are never broken
Heb 6:13-
Illus: Abraham and Isaac -
Abraham was promised a son
Then God sent him to Mt Moriah to sacrifice this beloved son
Why?
God wanted to show that his promise could be trusted and it would not be broken
Abraham builds the altar and prepares to slay his only son as God commanded - when he is stopped by an angel
App: How is it that we can overcome the hurt and disappointment of broken promises?
Cling to the promise of salvation by God
It will never be broken
It can be clearly seen in the first coming, incarnation, of Jesus Immanuel
This is why the writer of Hebrews can say:
Heb 6
Let us be encouraged as we go into Christmas that the promises of God are a certainty.
Salvation belongs to his people!
And, in this we know salvation will come when Christ returns.
And all God’s people said - AMEN!
