Matthew 25:36–40 KJV 1900
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Last week we spoke talked about finding ourselves and losing ourselves.
Mat25.
Purpose…
I want to make a difference doing something that makes a difference with people who make a difference at a time that makes a difference!
When you are bigger than your purpose, you have a career.
I want to make a difference doing something that makes a difference with people who make a difference at a time that makes a difference!
When your purpose is bigger then you, you have a calling!
Success vs Significance
Success vs Significance
Success is when I add value to myself.
Significance is when I add value to others.
You find yourself in success.
You loose yourself in Significance
When you find your why, you will find your way!
When you find your why, you will find your way!
Ended by saying that I feel like one of the biggest problems we have had with the church is we have focussed on being successful over significant.
We must stop focusing on growing the church and start focusing on growing people!
Questions:
1. What can we do to have the best year ever?
2. What do you want 2020 to be like for you, your family and the church?
3. What is our most valuable commodity?
Answer: People!
Quotes:
Benjamin Franklin: One is never useless who lightens the burdens of someone else.
Ghandi: The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
Albert Schweitzer: I don’t know what your destiny will be but, one thing I do know; the only ones among you that will be truly happy are those who have sought and found how to serve!
Schweitzer: I don’t know what your destiny will be but, one thing I do know; the only ones among you that will be truly happy are those who have sought and found how to serve!
MLK: Everyone can be great because everyone can learn to serve!
Success does not equal happiness, yet service does!
Yet service does!
Luke 22:24–27 KJV 1900
24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Age Old Problem: Horizontal vs. Vertical thinking
Horizontal vs. Vertical thinking
Horizontal = dog eat dog world, speak up or be left out, look out for #1
This is the age old struggle of us all!
Vertical = Seek ye first the Kingdom of God...
Three things to know about Vertical thinking
Service over Status
Philippians 2:3–4 KJV 1900
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Horizontal looks out for self
Vertical looks out for others
People are selfish: Group photo
Who did you look at first?
If it was a good or bad pic, depends on how YOU looked!
Horizontal looks to add value to self.
Vertical looks to add value to others.
2. Character over Comfort
Good Samaritan - why did the priest and levite NOT stop?
Inconvenience...
I bet the prayed for him!
Sad that prayer has become a COP-OUT!
3. We over Me
John 13:3–5 KJV 1900
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
John30.3-5
Jesus was personally going through the build-up to the darkest days of his life.
A horizontal thinker would have said...
Don’t you know I’m about to die a horrid death? LEAVE ME ALONE!
Don’t know know that all of you are about to curse me, leave me, betray me? I WANT TO BE ALONE!
Don’t you know that I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders? LEAVE ME IN PEACE!
But Jesus was a vertical thinker!
Look at verse 3… he came from God and went to God!
Nothing more vertical than that!
So his response was...
Bring me a wash basin
Where is the towel?
I want to wash your feet!
In the Gospels there are only two places where a wash basin is asked for...
Horizontal thinking Pilot: who would wash himself and excuse himself from what lay before him!
Vertical thinking Jesus: who would wash others and embrace what lay before him!
He would wash the feet of those who were about to betray him, deny him, curse him and run from him...
The picture has been painted that we are a bridge from the chaos of life to the peace of God.
If we are the bridge - PREPARE TO BE WALKED ON!
How can I bring value to someone’s life?
