Title - The Spirit of Liberty

Background

Paul was comparing the Old Covenant and New Covenant
the Law; the Grace of God
the Letter; the Spirit
ministry of death; ministry of the Spirit
the glory of the O.T. was passing, and was covered to hide its passing
the glory of the N.T. grows - from glory to glory
the glory of the N.T. is unveiled - unhindered, free
2 Corinthians 3:16–17 NKJV
16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
“taken away” = to take off round (something that is wrapped around)
Grk. PERIAIREO, to unmoor (as in a ship to pier ()
When a person turns to Jesus Christ, the veil (the bondage) is taken away by the Spirit of Liberty!

The Main Point

The Holy Spirit of God is given in order to set free those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus!
The Spirit of liberty is here to enforce the transaction that took place at Calvary!
The spirit of liberty is here to make sure that the purchase is applied to the believer’s life!
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1–2 NKJV
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.
Christ has made us free!
Let us stand fast in that liberty!
beware of the yokes of bondage!

Sermon Points

Yokes of Bondage

The yoke of bondage is intended to remove to benefit of Christ’s death in our life.
Galatians 5:2 NKJV
2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.
circumcision being a representative of a yoke (the law)

The yoke of fear

Hebrews 2:14–15 NKJV
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
fear of death subjects people to bondage
Jesus’ victory over death - His resurrection - says death has no more sting nor power over the life of a believer!
1 John 4:18 NKJV
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
fear involves (has) torment
torment = punishment
fear anticipates the punishment of sin.
fear serves as “advanced punishment”
The Spirit of Liberty sets us free from fear itself
no punishment awaits you in death, only rest!

The yoke of worldly traditions and practices

Galatians 4:9–11 NKJV
9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. 11 I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.
Galatians 2:9–11 NKJV
9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do. 11 Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed;
weak = without power, impotent
Galatians 2
beggarly = deserving contempt
elements = elementary principles of the world
observance of days, months, seasons and years (traditions, feasts)
Colossians 2.16
Christ - through His death - has redeemed us from the confines of the observance of the ordinances in the Law.
Colossians 2:16 NKJV
16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
Colossians 2:16–17 NKJV
16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
substance = reality
The Spirit of liberty sets us free from the bondage of traditions.
Christmas? I can celebrate and commemorate Christ’s birth anytime of the year!
Valentine’s Day? - I can express my love for my wife anytime, any day!
Mother’s Day? Father’s Day? You can celebrate your parents’ lives everyday!

The yoke of wrong relationships

2 Corinthians 6:14–15 NKJV
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
2 Corinthians 6:14 NKJV
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6.14
Relationship with unbelievers WILL SEPARATE you from fellowship with God.
Relationship with unbeliever is a YOKE OF BONDAGE.
Relationship with unbelievers WILL SEPARATE you from fellowship with God.

The yoke of corruption of the world

2 Peter 2:19–20 NKJV
19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.
2 Peter 2:19–21 NKJV
19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.
2 Peter 2:20 NKJV
20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.
2 Peter 2.19-
corruption = depravity; moral corruption
sinners are slaves of corruption
those who return to corruption becomes worse than before
The Spirit of Liberty sets us free from the power of corruption in our body of sin.
He empowers us to resist the passions of the flesh.
He helps us overcome the temptations of sin in our bodies.

There is Liberty in the Spirit

How can we enjoy the liberty that Christ has bought for us with His own blood?

Follow the leading of the Spirit

Romans 8:14 NKJV
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
absolute liberty belongs only to God.
Our freedom is found in obedience to the Holy Spirit.

Live and act as son or daughter of God!

Romans 8:15 NKJV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
Galatians 4:5–7 NKJV
5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
as a son of God, bear these 2 things in mind:
you have an inheritance
you have authority
The Spirit of liberty sets free the child of God!
Claim your inheritance and privileges!
John 1:12–13 NKJV
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12 NKJV
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
Exercise your authority over the works of the enemy!

If so - enjoy the freedom that He gives to you!
