Intro: So we’re in the final 4 chapters of these extraordinary books called 1 and 2 Samuel, and we’ve able to follow the life and the reign of the one known as the man after God’s own heart…We’ve see David bring down giants, we’ve seen him dodge spears, we’ve see sit of the throne as Israel’s greatest king to that point in history, and we’ve also see the darkest parts of David though his failures as a Man, Father and a king. and all in all this has been a unforgettable Journey

Now these last 4 chapters are not in Chronological order…They feel a little like a junk drawer, we’re gonna see a list of conquests, a psalm, his last words, his greatest sin all in these last 4 chapters

David Fighting

Let’s jump right into it....
2 sam
2 Samuel 21:15–17 ESV
15 There was war again between the Philistines and Israel, and David went down together with his servants, and they fought against the Philistines. And David grew weary. 16 And Ishbi-benob, one of the descendants of the giants, whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of bronze, and who was armed with a new sword, thought to kill David. 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and attacked the Philistine and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, “You shall no longer go out with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”
So here we see an account of David’s battles against some of the relatives of Goliath, 4 other giants…think about this…When David went out to fight Goliath…how many stones did he pick up?…5....One for Goliath and one for the rest of his brothers…He was expecting to take on all of them that Day…thats a Bad Dude...But now he’s we see the first one, a guy by the the name of Ishbi-benob who only was humongous but was also well armed. but David’s well acquainted with these giants so he goes out to battle, but he grows weary, and he begins to lose, and would have been killed if not for one of his might men of Valor Abishai he would likely would have
and here we see the first one, a guy by the the name of Ishbi-benob who only was humongous but was also well armed. but David’s well acquainted with these giants so he goes out to battle, but he grows weary, and he begins to lose, and would have been killed if not for one of his might men of Valor Abishai he would likely would have

This lays out a few things for us to remember:
Even the best of us will grow old and weary - It’s believed that David was well aged by this time, and the battle was getting harder…and it had gotten so bad that his men even said “It’s time for you to transition to more of an administration role…so that we can keep you more protected”
App: here’s the point: You just can’t do everything forever...
Don’t take for your time…don’t take for granted your opportunity
App: God protected David through the strength of another
This makes me think about principal Solomon spoke about in
2
Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 ESV
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
There are gonna be times when you gonna need to receive help from others
We live in a world that is connected yet isolated…it’s so common
There are gonna be times when you gonna need to receive help from others
Now we read about some more conquests...
2 Samuel 21:18–22 ESV
18 After this there was again war with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite struck down Saph, who was one of the descendants of the giants. 19 And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 20 And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was descended from the giants. 21 And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, struck him down. 22 These four were descended from the giants in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
1 sam 21:18-22
1 sam 21:18-22
So here we read of 3 other battles against these relatives of Goliath…that were won by David’s mighty men...
V.19 is an issue for many because in the esv, it that Goliath was killed by a man named Elhanan. which leads bible critics to say “See the bible is filled with contradictions”
There a few theories on this that should help you move past this
This was a simple copyist error - And the correct account actually took place in 1 chronicles 20:5...
1 Chronicles 20:5 ESV
5 And there was again war with the Philistines, and Elhanan the son of Jair struck down Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

The New American Commentary: 1, 2 Samuel 2. Loyal and Heroic Soldiers of David—I (21:15–22)

1. “Elhanan” an alternate name for David

2. “Goliath” a title, not a personal name

3. Two fighters from Gath named Goliath

Hebrew tradition alludes to the fact that David’s given name may have been Elhanan was David’s given name and He was given the name David when he became King
There were 2 fighters named Goliath
You might say “Goliath’s name is too rare”
Well some think Goliath is more of a title then a personal name
Lots of people have the same name…who would have ever thought there would be 2 Mephibosheth...
But here’a the big picture of what we see here from David
Our
David might have been the first to slay the Giant…but he wouldn’t be the last
God would raise up others
App: It’s important for us to always remember if God is in something, He will always raise up someone capable for the task
But David showed that by the power of God it could be done
These guys could defeat their giants because David defeated his
Question: How did these guys, who once coward at the Giant now believe that they could beat them? because David beat the first one
David’s Legacy lay not just his individual accomplishments…but in what he would leave behind when he’s gone
David’s Legacy lay not just his individual accomplishments…but in what he would leave behind when he’s gone
David’s Legacy lay not just his individual accomplishments…but in what he would leave behind when he’s gone
The best way to fight Giants is together

David singing

Chapter 22...
Now we move on to chapter 22…this psalm of David is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving. It’s strikingly similar to psalm 18 which is the longest psalm attributed to David
Now we move on to chapter 22…this psalm of David is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving. It’s strikingly similar to psalm 18 which is the longest psalm attributed to David
Now there’s a particular order to this psalm....theres’ 5 units of thought to it…but it’s constructed like a “flying V” of sorts...
Praise for the Lord (vv. 1–4)
b. The Lord’s deliverance of David (vv. 5–20)
c. Reasons for David’s deliverance (vv. 21–29)
b. The Lord’s deliverance of David (vv. 30–46)
a. Praise for the Lord (vv. 47–50)
So lets just jump in...
2 Samuel 22:1–4 ESV
1 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. 4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
2 Samuel 22:1 ESV
1 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
So here we have a general time stamp, and what we can see is that David wrote this song after a massive time of deliverance…and specifically from the hand of Saul…so Possibly around the the time of ....right before his encounter with Bathsheba...
Now he gives thanks to the Lord...
2 Samuel 22:2–4 ESV
2 He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. 4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
2 sam
Notice that this psalm is rich and expressive about who God is...the Lord is “my rock” (v. 2), “my fortress,” “my deliverer,” “my shield” (v. 3), “the horn of my salvation,” “my stronghold,” “my refuge,” and “my savior.” He piles title upon title about who God is...
Have you ever found yourself limited in your ability to express who God is, and what God means to you? You don’t know how to pray or what to say....there are 2 things that will help you to grow in your ability to express who God is...
The book of Psalms...
Walking with God through the trials of Life...
That leads us to the next section of this psalm…he begins to talk about the deliverance of the Lord...
2 Samuel 22:5–7 ESV
5 “For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me; 6 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 7 “In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears.
2 sam 22:5-
There are many who say “I just wanna see the power of God or Man i just wanna Know God more” You better be carful what you ask for because the truth is the only way you can experience God as your rock is in the midst of the waves…and the only way your gonna know him as your fortress is in the midst of the torrents of destruction…and the only way you can truly experience the rescuing power of God is by needing to be rescued once and a while.
God saved David from the Giants, Saul, Absalom…and even himself
App: You will never see the power of the Lord if you will never submit to the pains that the Lord brings
We’re gonna all the way to psalm 20...
2 Samuel 22:7–20 ESV
7 “In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears. 8 “Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 9 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 10 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 11 He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind. 12 He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. 13 Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. 14 The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice. 15 And he sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them. 16 Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 17 “He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 18 He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. 20 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
2 sam 22:
David answers the question “Why should I trust God in the midst of my destress?” and you can sum up David’s answer into 2 key words...Because he’s “Holy”and because He “hears”
David highlights the “Holiness of God” - At It’s heart the word Holy means “other” or “unlike anything else” and this is what David paints a picture of here...
Who else causes the earth to rock and the heavens to tremble V.8
Who has smoke from his nostrils and a devouring fire from his mouth V.9
1Who rides on the wings of the wind and the Cherubim V.1
Who thunders from heaven and with a rebuke lay the earth bear v.17
No one but the Lord…this is why demons tremble, this is why every knee will bow
And if that was all that God was, then we would have quite a terrifying reality on our hands…but then David highlights this other part of God...
David highlights the fact God “Hears”
7 “In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears.
10 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.
This makes me think of the Incarnation:
We’re not just talking about the distance from earth to heaven
We’re talking about the distance from Glory to Humanity
20 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
20 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
David had a sense that God delighted in him…He cried out to the Lord on the bases of relationship
App: And here we have why God is our great deliverer, because There’s nothing like him…and he’s not against us....He’s for us
There are times, when it’s comforting to know that God can Identify with us…
But there are also times it’s so comforting to know that God is nothing like us…specifically in trials
Jesus fits the description for deliverer because theirs nothing like him
Now we go on to David writing about why the Lord rewarded him...
2 sam
2 Samuel 22:21–25 ESV
21 “The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. 24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. 25 And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.
This is a problem considering the amount of sin that was in David’s life…where you put the writing of this psalm, at the end of 1 sam or at the end of 2 sam, there was not a long that we read of David ether about to go into a sin or he’s freshly coming out of one so how can this be true about David? it can only be true if this portion describes exclusively David’s dealings with Saul...
And V.1 alludes to the fact that this was written with Saul in Mind
2 Samuel 22:1 ESV
1 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
So David seems to describe that God’s hand of deliverance was upon him because David was blameless in his encounters with Saul
So David seems to describe that God’s hand of deliverance was upon him because David was blameless in his encounters with Saul
David says in regards to this relationship with Saul
My hands are clean v.21
I’ve kept the ways of the Lord V.22
I didn’t turn aside from his status V. 23
I was blameless v.24
I was clean in your sight v.25
And thats what we saw as well...
Charles Spurgeon said this
David’s early troubles arose from the wicked malice of envious Saul, who no doubt carried out his persecutions under cover of charges brought against the character of ‘the Man after God’s own heart”.
These charges David declares to have been utterly false and asserts that he possessed a grace given righteousness which the Lord had graciously rewarded in the presence of his enemies
Before God the man after God’s own heart saw himself as a humble sinner, but before his slanderers he could with unblushing face speak of the purity of his hands and the righteousness of his life.
There’s no self righteousness in a honest person declaring that they are honest, nor even in their believing that God rewards honest actions, but it would be self righteous indeed if transfer such thoughts from our standing before man into our standing before God…for there…grace reigns
This was David describing his standing in the midst of his enemies at that time...
App1 - David’s character even in the midst of his enemies…does it matter to you?
Are your hands clean?
Have you kept the ways of the Lord?
Are you blameless?
Are you clean in God’s sight?
Strive to be...
psalm 34:15-
Psalm 34:15–18 ESV
15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. 17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Illastration: You watch you mouth and your temper…God will watch your back
App2- I believe this should be a remember that you will never be in a place where you have outgrown your need for God’s grace
Because wether this was written right after Saul, or at the end of his life. David said these things…and then failed again
Wether it be David running to Gath, David with Bathsheba, or David taking a census of the people…Failure was near…So God’s grace must be near as well
Never lose sight of your need for God’s grace...
Look what else he’s saying...
2 Samuel 22:26–28 ESV
26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27 with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
2 san 22:26-28
David saying things that even Jesus spoke about in the sermon on the mount....He’s saying that God deals mercifully with the merciful…and he deals favorably with those of righteous character…And in regards to David’s dealing with Saul thats exactly what he was…merciful
Do you remember how he dealt with Saul? twice he had a chance to kill him…but he was merciful
Do you remember how he deal with Shimea? Mercifully
Do you remember how he wanted to deal with Absalom
App: Let’s see what the bible is declaring so obveously…in a world that is build on “what goes around comes around”
What will cause you to stand out as different is mercy
Real time mercy
The next time your wronged
The next time your cut off
The next time your stabbed in the back...
Flip the script of everyone....and say…It’s alright…I forgive them…it’s done
That might be the saltiest thing you can do
So here David begins How God has delivered him
2 Samuel 22:29–46 ESV
29 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. 30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32 “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33 This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. 34 He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. 35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great. 37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip; 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. 39 I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. 40 For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. 41 You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. 42 They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. 43 I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. 44 “You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. 45 Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. 46 Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.
2 Samuel 22:29 ESV
29 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness.
2 Samuel 22:22–46 ESV
22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. 24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. 25 And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. 26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27 with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. I love this because…David’s mighty men called him “the Lamp of Israel (21:17) But here’s the lamp of Israel saying to God “God your my lamp’”
App: Sometimes we over complicated leadership, but at it’s heart Good leaders are simply good followers of God…We go where he goes, and do what he says...
Then He continues...
David says “God you fight my battles”
2 Samuel 22:30–46 ESV
30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32 “For who is God, but the Lord? :30-46
What we see here in David is honest recognition that the Lord has been the one who has fought his battles...
By you I can run against a troop and leap over a wall v.30...He is a shield v.31...He is my strong refuge v.33 He has equip me with strength v.40, you made my enemies turn back v.41…you are me deliverer v.44
He is a shield v.31
App: This should remind us today that the Christian faith is not one of personal excellence, it’s one faith if Jesus’ excellence on our behalf
He is my strong refuge v.33
I think John has one of the most beautiful pictures of the christian faith “He must increase, and I must decrease”
The christian faith has a center to it…and it’s not us…Jesus is the center
He wins the battles,
He works the miracles
He builds the house
And for David…what powered his faith in the present for God’s faithfulness in the past “He says will trust you today....because you have been faithful
App: And for David…what powered his faith in the present for God’s faithfulness in the past “He says will trust you today....because you have been faithful
App: And for David…what powered his faith in the present for God’s faithfulness in the past “He says will trust you today....because you have been faithful
App: And for David…what powered his faith in the present for God’s faithfulness in the past “He says will trust you today....because you have been faithful
God’s faithfulness in the past should fuel your faith today...
App: And for David…what powered his faith in the present for God’s faithfulness in the past “He says will trust you today....because you have been faithful
God’s faithfulness in the past should fuel your faith today...
Question: You might say, how do I lear to trust God?…with practice:)
It starts today...
It starts with the little moments
At school in your conversations
being generous this christmas
Trust God with your kids
David’s keeps going…by praising God again...
2 sam 22:47-
2 Samuel 22:47–50 ESV
47 “The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48 the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, 49 who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence. 50 “For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name.
2 samuel 22:
2 Samuel 22:47–51 ESV
47 “The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48 the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, 49 who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence. 50 “For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. 51 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.”
I love this, because this is David looking back at the past 20-40 years…He’s seen his life, he’s seen the battles won, he’s God’s hand in the adversity’s and he really says 3 things
God…you fight my battles...
a. Great deliverance He gives to His king: David could say this with confidence, not only that God would give him deliverance, but also more importantly that he was His king. David knew this because he did all that he could to make sure that he did not seize or usurp the throne. He let God give it to him in time. David therefore had the blessed benefit of knowing that he was God’s king, and not one of his own making.
I’m gonna worship him - “blessed by my rock, exalted be my God”
David that the blessings, the role, all that he had accomplished was not because of him, because of God’s faithfulness…therefore he knew that he was “God’s king”
b. And shows mercy to His anointed: David perhaps thought back some 20 years before, when he was first anointed for the throne that he now received. It had been a long, but important journey between the time of his anointing and his receiving the throne.
b. And shows mercy to His anointed: David perhaps thought back some 20 years before, when he was first anointed for the throne that he now received. It had been a long, but important journey between the time of his anointing and his receiving the throne.
App: It is the right and healthy response of the christian to worship God
c. To David and his descendants forevermore: Here David understood something by either intuition or by faith, something that would not be specifically promised to him until later. The promise was that David (and not Saul) would begin a hereditary monarchy in Israel, and that his descendants would also sit on the throne of Israel. This was the promise to build a house for David that God explicitly made in .
I belong to him - “V.51 Great Salvation he brings to HIS king”
This is the King, the one who essentally owned everything saying…Saying Jesus owns me
What an appropriate response from someone who’s been saved by Jesus
Galatians 2:20 ESV
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
My Hope for the future is in Him - 51 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever - To David and his descendants forevermore: Here David understood something by either intuition or by faith, something that would not be specifically promised to him until later…That God would not only honor Him…But that he would bless his entire House…and thats excatly what would happen
From David’s house…Would come the greatest king universe would ever know
He would have the most power
He would be the most trust worthy
Through him David’s house would be blessed forever
