Introduction
The Hebrew writer is earnestly trying to get his readers to Heaven
He constantly extols the superiority of Jesus to the Levitical Priesthood and His ultimate sacrifice that saved us from an eternity of punishment
The writer also warns us not to be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin
Today we’ll look at some of the causes of being hardened by sin’s deceit and how to avoid them
Objective
The False Sense of Security
Pride
Ignoring the Law of Sowing and Reaping
Hebrews 3:12–14 ESV
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

False Sense of Security

Ecclesiastes 8:11–12 ESV
Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil. Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him.
Examples
Adam & Eve
Children of Canaan
Jews and the Temple
Jeremiah 7:3–4 ESV
Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

Pride

What is pride? It is just the passion that radiates from unbelief.
Proverbs 16:18 ESV
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
One of the ways in which we are hardened by sin’s deceit is by pride is
We are deceived by our own intelligence
1 Corinthians 3:18–20 ESV
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”
Wherever there is pride there is a man who is distance from God; wherever there is deep humility, there is a man who feels that he is living near to God.

Law Reaping and Sowing

1. You Get Back What You Put In

Galatians 6:7 ESV
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Galatians 6:8 ESV
For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

2. You Get Back More than What You Originally Put in

Matthew 25:21 ESV
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
Hosea 8:7 ESV
For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it.

3. There Will Be A Harvest

2 Thessalonians 1:7–8 ESV
and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

God’s Plan For Your Salvation

Romans 10:17 ESV
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Luke 13:3 ESV
No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Matthew 10:32 ESV
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,
1 Peter 3:21 ESV
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
2 Timothy 4:7 ESV
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
