15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Jn 3:16

II. BODY
A. Great Expectations
a. The Jewish people in Jesus’ day was expecting a savior
1. But not the savior o the world…the savior o God’s people (the Jewish people)
i. A man who would b big & strong, $$ & power, ready 2 deliver ‘em frm the oppressive Roman Gov.
ii. This man would rule justly, righteously, fairly & wipe-out all o Isr.’s enemies
-Isn’t that the situation 2which all the other kings & leaders o the world r born in2?
2. What might this savior look like?
i. born 2 a rich influential fam
-maybe rel. leaders
ii. in Jerusalem (the city w/the temple)
iii. Maybe born in the temple itself (place that was supposed 2b where heaven meets earth)
-Isn’t that the situation 2which all the other kings & leaders o the world r born in2?
3. This is the wrappings expected o such a great gift like a savior
i. What wrapping did the greatest gift have?
B. Great gift in poor wrapping
Similarly
(Describe scene)
Lk 2:
10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
a. The expectation 4 the savior was probably extravagance, but what they got was... Jesus
1. a baby, born 2 a poor family w/no influence
i. a carpenter 4 an adoptive father & a young virgin girl 4 a mom (yep, blended fam.)
2. instead o the temple / even a luxury hotel the savior is in a dirty mange w/all the sights & smells that go w/it
3. The folks God (Jesus’ daddy) decided 2 tell?
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.
i. Shepherds (1 o the least respected job in that culture)
b. Why such a great gift in such poor wrapping?
1. Doesn’t The savior o the world deserve better?
i. Apostle Paul (Author o over 1/2 the NT) gives us an inkling in...
Phil 2:6-
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Phil 2:
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
2. Jesus was God & equal w/God, sure he deserved it…but
c. Demanding his rights isn’t in his nature: “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped”
1. Jesus wasn’t worried about his rights…didn’t need 2 prove himself (secure in his ID)
d. Jesus’ nature is servant-hood, humility & obedience to his daddy in heaven (ya know the creator o everything)
1. So, instead o all the pomp & circumstance due him, he poured his God-ness in2 a lowly baby boy, & looking like all the other babies
i. God’s son learned 2 grow up just like the rest o us
ii. & then became a humble servant rather than living large & in charge.
-Why is Jesus the greatest gift ever?
C. through him we have a forever rel w/God & the forgiveness o sins
a. Remember what Jesus said in...
15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
1. that is a forever rel. w/God starting now
i. & Paul wrote o Jesus in...
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
b. By Jesus’ death & resurrection God forgives us our sins.
eph
b. Then was resurrected
-So, how was the greatest gift rec?
1. So, how was the greatest gift rec?
11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
Jn 1:11
C. The Greatest Gift Ever Given: initially rejected
a. Jesus was often rejected because of unmet expectation & humble wrapping
b. the thing is, God’s greatest gift ever given 2 humanity is still being offered 2 this day!
III. THE BIG ASK
A. What about u?
a. Will u rec. the greatest gift God ever gave humanity; salvation through the death & resurrection o Jesus?
A. maybe right now, having heard what P. Aaragon & P. Allen speak, ur realizing that u’re ready 4 a life change.
a. u recognize that u can’t do this on ur own
b. or u can’t fix ur self & r in need o a savior
B. How do we receive salvation? (as easy as 1, 2, 3)
a. Believe that Jesus is God's Son
: If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.
b. Receive Jesus as Savior & Lord
: Yet to all who did receive Him (Jesus), to those who believed in his name, He (that’s God) gave the right to become children of God
c. Do what God says by the strength o’ God’s spirit
: The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
C. The big ask:
a. close eyes, bow head
1. so no 1 is looking around; btwn u & God.
b. If ur ready 2 rec. the free gift o salvation I’m going to ask that, on count o 3, u lift up ur hands
1. By raising ur hand u r declaring u trust that
i. Jesus is the son o God
ii. accept Jesus as Savior & Lord
iii. Do what God says
2. I ask u 2 raise a hand cause there’s something powerful when we outwardly declare what is happening inside of us through Jesus’ work in our life
c. Then I’m going to pray w/& 4 u.
d. count to 3
