43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.

45 And Jesus said, Who touched me?

When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.

47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace

Note: Luke was a Physician so this story would have captured his attention and would have been one that he could understand.

Both Luke’s account and Marks accounts were very descriptive of the story and there was a couple additional points from the story in Mark that we will pull into the Luke account.

I wonder if Luke had treated her.

People refer to this as a parenthetical miracle because Jesus Healed her while on his way to do another miracle that was raising Jarius Daughter from the dead.

Think about Jarius as he was walking with Jesus trying to get Jesus to his house as soon as possible to save his little girl, what Dad wouldn't have done that.

Then Jesus stops to do a miracle.

I would have been like Jesus can we not double back.

The Diseased Soul

Distinct Woman

refers to her as a “certain woman” we can believe that the Lord knew her struggles and her suffering long before this day came to pass.

if you remember in there was a “certain rich man” the Lord knew them specifically but he does not use their name in this story.

This no random woman and certainly not a random happening.

There is no such thing as a coincidence but rather it is all Divine Providences.

Tradition says that she was Caesarea Phillipi so she had likely traveled to Capernaum just to find Jesus.

She would have been treated badly because in their culture ladies with issues of blood were treated almost as bad as lepers.

Diagnosis

She Suffered Boldly “twelve years” all three accounts of this story acknowledge her as having the disease twelve years.

“suffered many things of many physicians”

She had suffered the entire time that Jarius daughter was alive

She Shed Blood “fountain of her blood” “Issue of blood”

This is most likely related to a menstruation issue

She would not have had the helps women have to day for situations like this and the doctors would not have had the knowledge that they have today in how to treat her.

She Sickened “nothing bettered, but rather grew worse” “neither could be healed of any”

She was Separated

“And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even.

20 And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean.

21 And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

22 And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

23 And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even.

24 And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean.

25 And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.

26 Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation.

27 And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

28 But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.”

She would have been separated from others, not allowed to contact or be in contact with others.

Anyone touching her would have been unclean.

Had the crowd known she was unclean they would have turned on her like a rabid dog.

Think about how many had bumped into her while she was in the press all them would have been considered unclean.

Deficiency

Physically “many physicians”

Financially “spent all that she had” “spent all her living”

I wonder at times how many of them took advantage of her.

Doctors are not cheap.

Luke calls out not only the finances but also the failures of all the doctors.

Distress

Physically - She would have experienced physical discomfort and she would have suffered.

Psychologically - This would have been a very embarrassing sickness for her.

Emotionally - She had spent everything, tried everything, no doubt she had no hope.

Financially - She spent everything, we don't know what she had before but now she has nothing.

Sexually - She could not be with anyone like this, couldn’t have kids at this point.

Spiritually - She would not have been allowed into the temple while she had this disease, no one unclean could enter into the temple nor come in contact with the priests

Direction

She Heard of Jesus “she had heard of Jesus”.

There is something special about the name Jesus and there is something powerful about Hearing about Jesus.

when they saw what was done with casting the demons out of legion that “they fled, and went told it in the city and the country” was this where she had heard of Jesus.

Legion went and told of all that happened to him.

Did she hear it from him directly?

When you have a sickness it is Jesus that you need to turn to.

She Hunted Jesus “came in the press behind”

It is believed that she came here to find Jesus

Determination

She Turned to Jesus “came behind him”

Concealment - She didn’t want to be a spectacle

Courage - IT would have take great courage for her to come to Jesus.

She Tuned in to Jesus “came in the press behind” she didnt allow the crowd to prevent her from touching the master.

Many Attended “multitude”

Many Touched “ the multitude throng thee”

Many Pressed “and press thee”

She likely came to Jesus because Jesus was her last hope and all her hope was gone.

She took a chance with Jesus, perhaps Jesus wants you to take a chance with him.

She Trusted Jesus “if I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole”

She demonstrates great faith in this story.

Faith that should inspire us no matter how bad or bleak the situation is.

She Touched Jesus “touched the border of his garment” “hem of his garment”

It was believed that if they could touch His clothes that they would be healed.

It isn't the clothes that cleanses.

The Delivering Savior

Jesus Objective All thru this text Jesus was going about healing and helping people.

That was his objective.

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

I bet when Jesus stopped here and did this it was killing Jarius, saving Jarius daughter was one objective, however often when Jesus does something he does it for multiple reasons.

It was also his object to heal this woman.
