4 Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
6 We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.
I. Jesus came in the fullness of Humanity.
I. Jesus came in the fullness of Humanity.
4 What more could I have done for my vineyard than I did? Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes, did it yield worthless grapes?
Is 53:
4 Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
A. Jesus became fully human to save every human.

Is 5:4

Illus: Jesus has and always will be God. The miracle of Christmas is that God became a man… but He became a man intentionally.
Jesus became a man to carry every weakness of men. He became a man to experience our sickness. He became a man to carry all of the pain of humanity. He bacame a man to embrace all the wrath of God that we deserve.
I preach at Christmas time intentionally because I want you to connect the birth of Christ with the cross of Christ. I want you to see that Jesus came to suffer perfectly to save you.
BTW, God communicated this in who he told the news of Christ too. He told it to shepherds.
Don’t miss that the news of Christ was not given first to the Sanhedrin, which were the religious rulers of the Jews.... nor did God give this birth announcement to Caesar.
When God became a man he came to blue collar shepherds. He came to the folks who were the nobodies.
What better way to introduce the Lamb of God who would take away the world’s sins than to introduce him to sheep watchers.
The savior, the messiah, the baby placed into the feeding trough, the lamb of God was presented to shepherds.
8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock.
9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:
11 Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

12 This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.”
B. Because Jesus took on all our humanness, He alone can make atonement for us.

Illus: Why was it important for Jesus to take on all our humanness.
Jesus could not be your replacement if he did not live your life with your limitations perfectly.
In other words to be your perfect replacement Jesus needed to have dirty diapers… he needed to get sick… he needed to experience the brokenness of losing those he loved.... He needed to experience the fullness of life as a human.
Imagine with me the darkest hurt you have ever faced. Our God does not sit in heaven separated from your pain. Instead, he came to earth to embrace your pain. God knows the fullness of how you hurt. God carried your pain.
It is in experiencing the fullness of physical, emotional, psychological weakness that Jesus is our substitute.
He experienced all that was being human, without sin, so that he could be our perfect replacement. On the cross, because of his sinless life, he was the sacrificial lamb without blemish.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession.
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.
16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
Heb 4:
II. Jesus brought peace to earth.
II. Jesus brought peace to earth.
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
5 Now I will tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard: I will remove its hedge, and it will be consumed; I will tear down its wall, and it will be trampled.
A. Jesus was born with a death sentence.
A. Jesus was born with a death sentence.

Illus: As a dad I want to do everything I can to protect my kids. When they are sick, I get them the medicine they need. When they are emotionally broken, I hold them.
From the day that they were born, I have longed that they would have a long and successful life with little pain or heartache.
Jesus was not born to have a long and successful life. Jesus was born with a death sentence on him. He was born to pay for the sins of all humanity.
Isiah 53 had to have resounded in Jesus’ mind most of his life. He understood that he would be pierced, crushed, and wounded for our peace.
We often look at Christmas as a this peaceful, perfect. serene holiday. Sing silent nigh… look at these beautiful pictures of a baby in the manger.
I want to communicate that the peace of Christmas is found in the bloody cross of Christ. The birth of Christ was all about the death of Christ.
13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!
Lk 2:
B. Peace is only found in Jesus Christ.
B. Peace is only found in Jesus Christ.
5 Now I will tell you what I am about to do to my vineyard: I will remove its hedge, and it will be consumed; I will tear down its wall, and it will be trampled.
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.
Illus: Every single person is born into this world with a sinful nature. On top of that, we commit sin regularly through wicked and selfish thoughts, foolish words, and wicked actions.
There is not a single one of us who has gone a day without thinking, acting, or doing something selfish and sinful.
Because of our sin, or mess, God cannot be near to us. If God came near to us in our sinful condition, he would pour out all of his wrath on us.
Follow me here. When Jesus came to this earth, at his death, he took all of the sin of humanity. God did pour all of his wrath out on to jesus.
When we say that Jesus brought peace, that peace was a costly peace. That peace was purchased through Jesus’ shed blood. That peace was costly.
18 He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.
19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
21 Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds expressed in your evil actions.
22 But now he has reconciled you by his physical body through his death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before him—
Col 1:18-
III. How do your respond?
III. How do your respond?
6 We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.
A. Instead of going your own way, go straight to the sacrificed lamb.
A. Instead of going your own way, go straight to the sacrificed lamb.
Illus: The shepherds were minding their own business, living their lives, doing their job out in the fields. Then the angels showed up and tolad them of the savior who would bring them peace.
Their response was to leave what they were doing and run straight to Jesus.
The bible teaches that we are sheep that went astray, but this baby, the lamb of God, Jesus has taken the punishment we deserve.
The answer is not to try harder, or live more morally.
It is to follow the shepherd and run straight to Jesus. That is faith, knowing you cannot save yourself, but going to the one who can.
15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”
